SUMMARY DCC ANNUAL PUBLIC MEETING The DCC Annual Public Meeting took place on Tuesday 6th April at 8 pm in the Heritage Centre. A minutes silence was observed for the late Cathal O Loughlin, recently deceased, who was a founder member of the Community Council. The various committees presented their reports and these will be published as a supplement later in the year. Several topics came up for discussion under AOB. Comment was made on the increasing number of empty premises and the neglected look these give to the town. The market that has commenced on Saturday mornings in the Tramyard and its negative impact on Dalkey Businesses. There is a Health and Safety issue here and Cllr. Stephen Fitzpatrick informed us that the Tramyard had been zoned for commercial use. Cllr. Jane Dillon Byrne informed us that DLRCoCo are spending 200k to upgrade and improve The Metals and make the road junctions safer. The closure of Vico Road due to the collapse of the retaining wall is an ongoing issue between the owners of the property and the Local Council. In an answer to a question from a Councillor the matter is being vigorously pursued by the County Council Transport Dept. Cllr. Mary Mitchell O Connor thanked residents of Dalkey who supported her in the last election. She thinks the local community will be happy with the new Draft Development Plan. There are 66 shops closed in Dun Laoghaire and a strategy policy is urgently needed to help regenerate the whole area. She pointed out The Heritage Centre as an excellent resource in Dalkey and we should capitalise on it. We must shop local and support our town. The Patton Flyer licence issue has been taken to Europe by Senator Eugene Regan. Hopefully it will be sanctioned for future operation. The iron gateway that has been removed from the seafront in Dun Laoghaire may find a home in the IADT on Kill Avenue. Finally the Chairman Dr. Susan McDonnell thanked Margaret Dunne for the use of the Heritage Centre and Donal for all his help during the evening. DALKEY COMMUNITY COUNCIL ANNUAL COLLECTION Dalkey Community Council Limited would like to thank all residents who have contributed to the Council s Annual Collection through the collection envelopes recently. Your generosity is most appreciated, as without your help the Community Council could not bring you the Newsletter, Christmas Tree Lighting (& Santa s Visit) and many other activities to the community. To those who may still wish to contribute please leave your contribution in a sealed I may be lucky with the Mayfly envelope in the Council postbox in Our Lady s Hall, Castle Street or contact your Road Representative. Once again, many thanks for contributing to the community spirit that makes Dalkey so special for all of us. 2

Please note these tours must be pre-booked. Contact details below. The Tudors are back! They are alive and well and living at Dalkey Castle from May 1st. See the Dalkey Tudors as they go about their daily lives while under the shadow of the world s most notorious royal. Living History Live Performances daily from 10.00-18.00 everyday except Tuesdays. Henry VIII s pressure to father a male heir forces a confrontation with Rome, which ends with the establishment of the Church of England, with Henry VIII as its head. Meanwhile the local castles at Carrickmines, Bulloch, Shanganagh and Monkstown steered a loyal path in all things except religion. English rule predominated and in 1536 The Act of Supremacy was passed by the Irish Parliament. The confiscation of Church land followed. Both the Anglo Irish and Native Irish resisted Protestantism. Henry VIII did not want to waste money on war in Ireland. So in 1541, he tried to gain possession of Ireland by peaceful means, using a system of Surrender and Re-grant. The Irish lords were to recognise the King as sovereign of Ireland he gave them a title, they swore an oath of loyalty to the King and received their land back from him! This was a very clever scheme as the lords lands became forfeit if they were found guilty of treason. 3

BARBER SURGEON: It was the infamous Henry who combined the trades of Barber and Surgeon in 1540. In the Living History presentation The Tudor Barber Surgeon of Dalkey follows suit, with gruesome and often hilarious consequences. THE TUDOR ARCHER defends the loyal Castle at Dalkey with his longbow. Hear all the terms of archery such as: keep it under your hat, another string to your bow, and of course the origins of the infamous V sign! THE MEDIEVAL COOK prepares a meal of Tudor delights.the GHOST OF ST BEGNET S GRAVEYARD alights in Tudor Ireland and a mystery unfolds. There is a Living History Live Performance every half hour daily (except Tuesdays) Larger groups can book for one hour. Please note: numbers on each tour are limited. TWO LETTERS TO THE EDITOR CO CO MARKET Dear Editor, I write this letter as a customer of the Co Co Market held each Friday morning in the Heritage Centre (Town Hall), which is supported by Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council. Some people are under the impression that it no longer operates. On the contrary, it still operates, as it has done for the last five years, from 10.00am to 3.00p.m. every Friday. There is a very good variety of fresh Irish-grown produce, cakes, fish (fresh from Kilmore Quay, Co. Wexford), garden plants, shrubs and herbs. The baked goods stand also carries gluten-free and vegetarian dishes and soups. Their cooking premises are Health Board approved. The vegetable and fruit stand offer a good supply of organically grown vegetables and fruit. Most of the produce is grown and made in Co. Wicklow. The spring flower plants which I purchased at the market are now in full bloom in the garden and are giving my neighbours and me much pleasure. I would like to thank the market producers for their courtesy and friendly assistance at all times. Long may they continue in the Heritage Centre. MARY COLEMAN Dalkey RE: DALKEY JOBSEEKER S FORUM Dear Editor, I am a member of the pastoral council in Parish of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Dalkey. As a Pastoral Council we want to respond to the plight of those on Jobseekers Allowances or Benefits in Dalkey. We want to show our solidarity with jobseekers who live, play or pray in Dalkey. We want them to know that: Yes, we see you, we care and how can we help? We will host a night at the end of May, where we will launch a Dalkey Jobseeker s forum. We are contacting local businesses (DBA), churches, sports clubs, and of course most importantly the job seekers themselves. Not being able to work brings about far more than monetary poverty. As a faith community we are moved to play our part in supporting people, young and old who are affected by this recession. All are welcome, whether a job seeker or a member of the community with an idea to contribute. We will advertise the format of the night in the coming weeks around the town. Kind Regards, LIZ MURRAY 5

A VIEW FROM A KENYAN WINDOW MAEVE COGHLAN IN KENYA You are unlikely to have heard of Cheryl s Children s Home in Kenya? I certainly hadn t until 2007, when James Nelson, (Celtic Tenor and friend) was about to embark on a humanitarian trip to Kenya. James had come to know of Cheryl s through a longstanding friendship with Basil Love. Kibera, a suburb of Nairobi, is the biggest slum in Kenya, with a population of 1.6 million. It has no sanitation, no street lighting, streets of mud with open sewers and ramshackle shacks of galvanised sheeting, about 12 square feet in area. Thousands of orphans sleep rough on the street, many resorting to prostitution, stealing and glue sniffing. In November 2003, Basil Love, frustrated by money flittered away in administration costs, set up Kenya Build. His determination was to construct permanent accommodation for the Kenyan orphans, with as far as possible all the facilities which we regard as basic. Prior to Kenya Build s Maeve Coghlan in Kenya intervention, orphanages had been thrown together in corrugated iron shacks, far from leakproof roofs, no sanitation or running water, and, of course the inevitable rats. One such orphanage is Cheryl s Children s Home in Dagoretti, not far from Kibera (www.cherylshome.net). There are 65 children resident in Cheryl s under the inspirational management of Samuel Sambuli, who gave up a profitable profession as an accountant to give these children a second chance of life. You should see all the radiantly happy faces of these children, who are loved, getting regular meals, have clothes to wear and receive an education; all of this where, previously, there was nothing. I have now made three trips to Cheryl s. On each occasion, James and I have spent a week teaching singing, recorder and keyboard playing. The children never tire of singing, recorder and keyboard playing. The children never tire of singing and they enjoy endless hours of practising. Last June, with Colm Henry (pianist and musical director of the Celtic Tenors), we performed in four fund-raising concerts; two in the Muthaiga Club (used in the filming of Out of Africa) and two in the Lord Erroll Restaurant (used in the filming of The Constant Gardner). The children from Cheryl s Children s Home also entertained and delighted the audiences with songs at these concerts, singing amongst other things the Bare Necessities. How s that for double meaning? These can be seen on YouTube. Search for Cheryl s Children or Maeve Coghlan. In January, James and I spent a week teaching the children. We had fun learning favourites like Supercalifragalistic, On Top of the World, Consider Yourself. We intend to travel to 7

Nairobi in June and perform concerts again involving the children. We also have plans to record a CD of the children singing. All the proceeds will go towards the children s education and general welfare. St. Patrick s Church in Dalkey has also raised a lot of money in aid of Cheryl s Children s Home. James and I are planning a concert All in the April Evening, in St. Patrick s Church on Sun 25th April, 2010 at 8pm. All the proceeds will go directly to Cheryl s Children s Home. Please support us. Each child in Cheryl s has a horrific background. The child I sponsor, Kevin, was abandoned at the age of two. He turns 12 in February. With no relatives and no history, Kevin was totally alone. If you would like to identify with this wonderful enterprise, please get in touch with me, when I can tell you what sponsoring a child has been like for me and for others who have done the same. It is more blessed to give that to receive, certainly, but the warmth that comes back to us in our sponsoring constitutes a blessedness in receiving beyond imagining. My last letter from Kevin read: I thank God I was rescued by a Good Samaritan and taken to Cheryl s. I thank God I have somebody out there who cares for me. maevecoghlan@gmail.com (www.myspace.com) www.kenyabuild.com Maeve Coghlan is a singing teacher in Wesley College and assistant organist in St. Patrick s Dalkey Ms. Bernie Nevin, Manager of Our Lady s Hall, Dalkey, being presented with a small token of appreciation on behalf of Dalkey Community Council for her help over many years on the occasion of her recent retirement 9

NATURE CORNER Michael Ryan Blackbird singing In the March issue I put in a photo of Bluebells in flower, taken last year on Killiney hill, and said some of them would be in flower by the end of March. They weren t. By the second week in April I still hadn t seen one open. So I was a bit relieved about my faulty forecast, when I heard an item on a nature programme saying bluebells were three weeks late opening this year, due no doubt to the hardest winter we ve had in nearly 40 years. Migrant birds have no idea what the weather is going to be like here when they set off from their wintering grounds in Africa. Birds that arrive here early might be able to get the best nest sites or attract a mate early but it s obviously a risk when, as this year, they arrive to unseasonably cold weather with even snow falling after some of them have arrived and very little insect food in the air. Newly arrived migrants had been reported before St.Patrick s Day but it wasn t until Easter Monday I saw my first swallow, flying in over the house. Two days later on our early morning walk around the hill as we came on to the Green Road, the path over the Vico Road, I heard my first burst of Blackcap song. Although many blackcaps overwinter and take peanuts and apples in our gardens those particular birds are from Eastern Europe and the blackcaps that breed here migrate from wintering ground in Southern Europe. Known as Ireland s Nightingale because of their exuberant song they do very well on the hill with at least seven male blackcaps singing every year. Delighted to hear my first singing blackcap this summer a few minutes later I heard my first singing Chiffchaff then behind it another burst of Blackcap song, a second one recently arrival. As we came to the end of the path, yes, there was another one singing. I ve no doubt they d only arrived within the previous 24 hours on the strong southerly winds. Hope the weather stays nice for them. And for us of course! As part of the effort to preserve Killiney and Dalkey hill s small population of red squirrels the parks department acquired two handmade Red Squirrel wire feeder cages to supplement the squirrels diet. These cages are specifically designed so red squirrels can enter them but the entrance is made too small for the bigger grey squirrel to get in at the food. Two areas where reds Red Squirrel eating larch seed 11

are regularly seen were chosen. The cages arrived and both were put up. There s always a risk putting up anything in the woods because of the level of anti social behaviour at night and at the weekends but it was decided it was worth the risk. Supplementary feeding has been very valuable in other projects where red populations have expanded. Red Squirrels actually have more natural food available in winter when all the conifers seeds are on the trees and in spring when they feed on new buds and bulbs and food provided for them, hazel nuts and maize, can be very valuable in late summer. Unfortunately, worst fears were realised a few days later when I got a text to say that one cage put up had disappeared the following day, even though it was tied tightly well above head height on a tree. Very disheartening initially although a few days later someone found the feeder thrown into bushes and returned it to park staff. It s been put up again in a- hopefully- more inaccessible position. The old pool in our garden used to host literally thousands of tadpoles every year but, perhaps due to a accumulation of conifer leaves making the water too acidic, we hadn t had any frogs in it for the last few years. I drained off most of the water this winter but left some for birds to bathe in and the frogs are back this year. Frogs don t spend all their lives in water, wintering under cover in gardens and they often turn up in our flower beds and the edges of lawns. I ve had some near misses and some very nasty accidents with lawn mower and hedge clippers coming into contact with frogs, sometimes leaving the frog fatally injured. They are such helpless creatures and always have a sort of bewildered apprehensive expression so having to put them out of their pain is very unpleasant but the only kind option. Thankfully, that doesn t happen too often. The night before St.Patrick s Day I was about to flick a leaf off the path when I realised it was a frog, sitting motionless. It made no resistance as I moved it to the side of the path. The following day glancing out the back window I saw a magpie picking at something on the lawn. I asked my partner to have a look and she reported that yes, it was a frog, probably last night s one, and the magpie had badly picked at its head and body. But it was still alive. She d moved it in to cover and I wondered was it too badly injured to survive, dreading having to dispatch it. It was cut but had stopped bleeding so we took it down and put it in cover by the edge of the pool. There was loads of activity in the pond that day, frogs very visible in the shallow water and they d already deposited big clumps of frogspawn. Checking on our injured frog a few times I saw it hadn t moved and wasn t expecting it to so I was surprised later when I saw it had moved and was now swimming around in the pool, clearly recognisable by the wound on its head. It looked none the worse for its experience and in fact a male frog was coupling with it. The photograph shows the injured frog on the left side of the photo while another pair of frogs mate above a mass of frog spawn. Later in the day I counted 20 frogs in the shallows and that night I could hear them making a churring sound like little two-stroke motorbikes. Feeding birds all through the year can be of great help to them but never put out loose peanuts, dry hard foods, and Frogs mating 13

large chunks of bread or fats during the spring or summer. These foods can be harmful to nestlings. But peanuts and sunflower seeds in wire or plastic feeders can be of great help to adult birds. They can keep themselves well fed while they hunt for insects and other suitable food for their chicks. Last year in June our Blue Tits left the nest just as the weather turned horrible, cold and wet. We saw the Blue Tit on cherry tree parent birds feeding them later with food they were taking from the feeders. Once they re old enough to fly they can eat the same food as their parents. Water is very important to birds especially for keeping their feathers in good condition. If you don t have a bird bath a upturned dustbin lid or even a big plate will do. Make sure the water isn t too deep or tilt the lid or dish slightly so the bird can wade in. DALKEY BUSINESS GROUP The local businesses in Dalkey are proud to announce the formation of the Dalkey Business Group, coming together to support, promote and build sustainable growth in the Dalkey area. Our first main meeting was held on Monday, March 22nd at the Heritage Centre and was attended by over 80 local businesses. Following this, the initiative received interest from national newspapers and broadcasters and has caused a ripple effect not only in Dalkey but throughout the country. Unfortunately, over 10 businesses have been forced to close in the recent past and conditions remain precarious for many others. We see this as a threat, not only to business owners, but to the very fabric of the town. In recognition of this we have taken a pro-active approach to re-energise the town and community spirit once more. We have identified these two steps which we believe can be taken to achieve this common goal. 1. Getting to know each other as a business community and encouraging cross-business trade and support. 2. Putting a structure in place which will allow the group to form a stronger relationship with local and national government bodies to promote the town of Dalkey. To date there has been an overwhelming number of creative ideas and initiatives put forward. A number of these are receiving a broad base of support. We look forward to establishing Dalkey in the hearts and minds of the wider public. 17

OLD RESIDENTS OF DALKEY-THE HERBERT FAMILY In 1991 the Australian Federation of Family History Societies Meeting was held in Launceston, Tasmania, Australia. I had the pleasure of attending. A session was held where people could enquire about their Irish Heritage. I did not speak, as I felt a little nervous, listening to others who were asking about Irish convicts and farmers. Finally, not knowing Herbert House from what status of society my family emanated, I bucked up the courage to ask for help about people from Dalkey. I almost wished I hadn t asked, as a gentleman credited with being the expert at the session rose to his feet and told me. Contrary to anything you may have been told, if they came from Dalkey they were very wealthy indeed. Dalkey is the Toorak of Dublin..Toorak is a very exclusive suburb of Melbourne, Australia; I come from Sydney. Dalkey now acts like a magnet in my thoughts, how I wish I could be there. Your magazine is giving me the next best thing, the opportunity to interact with the people now living in Dalkey. When I was a teenager I commenced trying to locate my family not knowing my connection to Ireland. My great great grandfather had been born in Scotland to Henry Moncton Herbert and Jane Barlow in 1808. I later discovered Henry and Jane had married in Dublin in 1804. I have found Jane came from a rather prominent family, her brother Thomas William Barlow is listed in the 1850 Dublin directory as solicitor to the Ordnance and his twin brother Arthur Craven Thomas William Herbert Barlow had a 99 year lease of the Earl of Arran s property, Saunderscourt, Co. Wexford, where he raised Arab horses. Both brothers owned property in Dublin City. Their grandfather is listed as Councillor Barlow but I have not yet identified him. I had no idea of the Barlow family when I asked my question in Tasmania. My quest was for the Herberts whom I knew had lived in Dalkey. Henry and Jane had the following children, Henry Arthur, my great, great grandfather, a master mariner, Elizabeth, George, Thomas William and Jane Emily. It is George, Elizabeth and Jane Emily who are connected with Dalkey. I am not sure about Thomas William. Little is known of Elizabeth other than she is described as lady in the status column of her death certificate and she lived in Rockingham Nerano Road from the 1850s, where she is listed as head of the house. At this time her brother George lived with his mother Jane Herbert at Manders Terrace, Ranelagh. The younger sister Jane Emily also lived with her mother until Jane s death in 1856. George then moved to Rockingham with Elizabeth, and Jane Emily married Dr. Thomas Mills of Tipton, Staffordshire in England. Elizabeth died at Rockingham in 1888, Lizzie Kavanagh was the informant. George Herbert had a publishing, bookselling business in Wickham Street and later at 117 Grafton Street, Dublin. He apparently published the Dublin University Magazine for some years. His obituary at his death in 1891, published in the Irish Times, shows he was a much respected gentleman both by the laity and clergy of all the Protestant denominations. At one time George was immediate lessor of Khyber which appears to be next door to Rockingham and Rockingham Cottage. He also published some of his sister s later books. Mary Whelan was present at his death and W. McDowell Wright the registrar. When George made his will in 1884 he left an estate which was to supply an annuity to his 18

sister Elizabeth and brother Thomas William for their lifetime. At the death of both of them the estate was to then be divided among the five daughters of his elder brother Henry Arthur who had died in Calcutta in 1848. Jane Emily Herbert the younger daughter grew up to become an avid writer. She produced - Poetical Recollections of Irish History, A Short History of Ireland 400-1829 -The Bride of Imael and Ione s Dream. Benjamin D Israeli wrote of The Bride of Imael, A beautiful volume, in which I found grace and fancy, a melodious ear, and the healthy interest of a national subject. I have the good fortune to have two volumes of Jane Emily s work: A Short History of Ireland and Ione s Dream, which is inscribed as follows: Portrait of Male Herbert To W.J. Fitzpatrick With regards George Herbert. When I had someone look at the books in the National Library in Dublin, the lady was not allowed to photocopy them and was told they were National Treasures. Until her mother died Jane Emily and brother George lived at Manders Terrace. George then moved to Rockingham and Jane Emily married Dr. Mills in the parish of Monkstown, and the marriage certificate gives her town land as Kingstown. On her death certificate 1882 Jane Emily is given as living at Moryn Lodge, Sorrento Road, other documents stating she was formerly of Moyvone Cottage and 21 Pembroke Terrace, Upper Holloway, London. Elizabeth McCrudden was present at the death and William McDowell Wright the registrar. I do not think Jane Emily Herbert is included in the Writer s Museum at Dalkey, maybe she should? The youngest brother Thomas William according to the Devon 1851 census was born in Ireland maybe Wicklow. He became a clergyman serving in Devon, Staffordshire and Southend on Sea, Essex. The Rev. Herbert served at St. John s Southend on Sea from 1860-1902. According to a marriage certificate of Thomas William his father was an army officer and on that of Jane Emily her father s occupation is given as HM which I understand means in the service of the Crown. We cannot find him and the family seem to disappear from Ireland until the 1850s when they return to Dalkey. Could it be they followed the fortunes of their father until he died probably about 1845? As the eldest son Henry Arthur Herbert was the only sibling to have children; there are no descendants of this family Portrait of Female Herbert still in Ireland. Henry was only 48 when he died in Calcutta leaving his widow with four daughters and another born a few days after her father s death. The widow brought three of her daughters to Australia in 1862, followed by her sister with the youngest two in 1864. When the Herbert girls in Australia received their legacy, a grandson of Henry and Jane Herbert purchased a home in Brisbane and a holiday cottage at Redcliffe, Queensland which he named Dalkey. DUBLIN - EUROPEAN CAPITAL OF SPORT - 2010 This year Dublin City has been selected as European Capital of Sport 2010. Dalkey Olympic fencer, Fionbarr Farrell, has been appointed as one of the Ambassadors of Dublin Sport 2010. A reception was held in Dublin Castle to mark the start of the year at which the European Capital of Sport flag was officially handed over from the City of Milan to Dublin. Fionbarr Farrell joined Irish representatives, including boxer Bernard Dunne, at this ceremony. Lord Mayor, Councillor Emer Costello, presented the eleven Ambassadors with a piece of engraved Dublin crystal to launch the start of Dublin - European Capital of Sport 2010. Our ambassadors of sport give an enormous amount of their time, energy and personal commitment in order to make Dublin the sporting city that it is. We commend them and are very grateful for all that they do. I hope that by highlighting how these individuals contribute to their sports and in turn help to strengthen communities, that others will be inspired by them to get involved in sport too, said Mayor Costello. The Dublin European Capital of Sport 2010 website, www.dublinsport.ie, provides details of sporting events during the year. Let s hope Dalkey may add some fixtures to the site to celebrate Dublin - European Capital of Sport 2010. FAIRTRADE IN DALKEY By the end of 2011, one hundred percent of Ben & Jerry s Ice Cream will be Fairtrade. With many multinational companies such as Ben & Jerry, Starbucks and Cadbury switching to Fairtrade, then 21st century truly is the time for fairer trade. A year ago, when I began to stock and sell Fairtrade products once a month along with others from my Youth Group, I had no idea what the Fairtrade logo meant. To me it meant simply standing around in the community centre for a couple of hours each month trying to convince my neighbours that our tea was much better than their usual Lyons/Barrys/Bewleys, etc and trying not to overindulge in delicious chocolate! For many people, Fairtrade is an idea that they know is worthwhile but unsure as to why. Basically, Fairtrade means that the people who produce the raw materials for factories etc. get paid the proper amount of money for what they sell. Many farmers in Third World countries are cheated out of decent wages, working conditions and sustainability. When we buy Fairtrade Guaranteed Products we are ensuring that those in poor circumstances are working in the right conditions for the right price. Simple, right? But how does it actually work? Before a product can become certified it must reach a few standards. For example, the workers and their employers agree on a set price for the amount of product that is bought each time. Even if the market price falls, the employers still pay the agreed price. However, if the market price grows then so do the wages of the workers! In addition, the workers collectively are given a separate sum of money with which they can improve their community. The working conditions must also reach a high standard of safety. These are the ethical reasons to buy Fairtrade. For us, the consumer, the quality of the product is just as important as its origin. I can say that from my experience, Fairtrade products are just as high quality as any other major brands. Not only are there multinational brands such as Ben & Jerry and Cadbury supplying Fairtrade, other smaller brands such as Traidcraft and Divine are cropping up in shops all over the EU. The variety of products available range from staples like rice, pasta, tea, coffee, fresh fruit, sugar and cereal to standard luxuries like chocolate, toffee, cakes, biscuits, flowers, clothes, beer and wine. (Those with a sweet tooth like me will definitely love the variety of Fairtrade goodies!). I have given you the main reasons why I believe Fairtrade is worthwhile but I cannot make the decision to commit to this idea for you. Choosing Fairtrade is a personal choice each one of us has to make ourselves because, at the end of the day, it is useless to say that you agree with buying Fairtrade if you don t buy Fairtrade products. As the old saying goes: ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS! REBEKAH WADE Secretary, Dalkey Parish Youth Group MANY THANKS... COURGETTES RECIPE Now is the time to enjoy small and flavoursome courgettes. The Italians and North Americans call them zucchini, though the French and Brits keep in mind their relationship to the courge (French for marrow) and call them courgettes, as they are essentially marrows picked early. In general, the smaller they are, the more flavour they have. They can be poached, blanched, stuffed, baked, fried, steamed or stewed, and taste great combined with garden herbs. Or try them preserved in vinegar, made into fritters or stirred into risotto. If you ve grown your own, you can make good use of the flowers too: stuff them with ricotta and deep fry until crisp. COURGETTE AND GRUYERE RISSOLES WITH CREAMY LIME AND MINT DIP Ingredients For the creamy lime and mint dip For the courgette and gruyère rissoles 1 /2 courgette, grated 2 free-range egg yolks 55g/2oz gruyère, grated 1 tbsp plain flour, plus extra for dusting salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 tbsp olive oil 200g/7oz Greek yoghurt squeeze fresh lime juice small handful fresh mint, chopped salt and freshly ground black pepper For garnish 1 lime, cut into wedges 1 tbsp chopped fresh chives METHOD 1. For the rissoles, mix the grated courgette, egg yolks, gruyère, flour, salt and freshly ground black pepper together in a bowl. 2. Divide the courgette mixture into four equal portions and dust with a little plain flour. 3. Heat the olive oil in a frying pan over a medium heat. Add the rissoles and fry until golden-brown on all sides. Remove from the pan and drain on kitchen paper. 4. For the dip, mix all of the dip ingredients together in clean bowl. 5. To serve, place the rissoles onto a serving plate and serve with the dip alongside. Garnish with lime wedges and chopped chives. www.tinadunne.com Nature Trail Day, Dalkey Hill April 10th 29

GARDEN JOBS FOR MAY In the last week of May, as long as there is no forecast of frost, you can start planting your summer bedding out that you have just purchased from the garden centre in their containers and remember to water after planting. If you have grown bedding plants from seed in the greenhouse, then slowly harden them off before planting. Weeding Keep weeding by hoeing or hand weeding with a trowel. Primulas After Flowering dig up & divide Primulas & Forsythia. Flowering Currants and Forsythia Flowering currant and forsythia shrubs can be pruned as soon as they have finished flowering. With both these shrubs you should remove one -third of the oldest flowering stems. If your shrubs are very old you can rejuvenate them by cutting them back to nearly ground level, but it could take several seasons for them to flower again. Pinching Out Your Fuchsia Pinching out the tips of your fuchsia will encourage it to become bushier. For each tip you take off two side shoots will develop and in turn will produce flowers. Stake Herbaceous Perennials Tall growing plants such as Delphinium, Lupin and Monkshood need a frame work of canes and string around then to help prevent them been damaged by winds. May can be a very stormy month. Hanging Baskets Plant up hanging baskets in the greenhouse. Give shrubs, trees, and borders some compost. Roses Keep bugs away with a regular check and a systemic insecticide spray. This month you can plant Gladioli bulbs, Dahlia tubers, sweet peas & tomatoes. Apply Weed Killer to paths and drive ways during dry weather. Trim Winter Flowering Heathers with the shears. Take Cuttings from fuchsias, geraniums and other tender plants. CHRISTMAS IN NEW ZEALAND SLIGHTLY WARMER THAN DALKEY..... A VIEW OF HOWICK, NEW ZEALAND. Courtesy of Auckland Treehome Bed & Breakfast Accommodation The local town is looking good - very good with fairy lights strung along the main street, decorative shop windows all full of fantastic festive colour and cheer and the Big Man himself sits proudly in his grotto sharing the special moment with all the kiddies passing by. Dressed in his warm woolly red suit and big black boots with all the trimmings, he swelters in the afternoon sunshine! Traditional mince pies are on offer outside the bakery, turkey and ham on sale at the local butcher. Food baskets and other goodies are stacked high on the supermarket shelves. Yes, the sun is shining outside, blue skies and about 22 deg. C simply beautiful...christmas in New Zealand is a very special time. Christmas in NZ is absolutely beautiful and so lovely to have the sunshine, lazy days at the beach, BBQ s and sausage sizzles, it somehow doesn t quite fit 100% with the Christmas weather I am use to!! Growing up in the Northern hemisphere and always enjoying a cold, sometimes snowy and more often wet Christmas, when one hurries indoors to keep warm by the fire and feel cosy by the glowing colours of the tree, the delicious smell of mulled wine and warmth of central heating, it is hard to feel Christmassy in the sunshine. In the village where I now live (Howick, which is Eastern suburbs of Auckland), we have a Traders Night called Midnight Madness. This happens early in November when the theme of Christmas is in the air and it is time to get serious about the forthcoming event. Advertisements start to appear on the radio and TV. Shops and restaurants begin to decorate and promote their goods in fantastic Christmas style. It is one day and night when all the shops and the locals go a wee bit mad. They stay open late (until midnight) and entice 35

customers by offering mince pies, lovely Christmas music and the general atmosphere is electric! Great bargains and discounted prices are on offer until midnight. The place is packed. On Stockade Hill, which overlooks Howick and offers 360 deg. views of the surrounding area, there is an enormous tree - a landmark for miles around, lit up like a beacon giving a warm glow in the general direction of Howick. It can be spotted from the Tamaki strait and from the island of Waiheke across the bay. A tree lighting ceremony takes place early on with Brass bands playing all the traditional Christmas carols. A group of local school children sing in candle light adding to the atmosphere. Despite all the buzz and attention to detail, it still doesn t feel like Christmas! At the end of the school year, usually around Dec 15th we enjoy the school productions to mark the special event; held outside for many on open air stages with shade to protect from the glaring sun light. The children perform and sing just like home, but not so much the nativity production. This year we enjoyed Why the Grinch stole Christmas... The BBQ is fired up and ready to go, steaks and sausages sizzle in the afternoon sun while the beers stay chilled packed high on ice in the chilly bin in the corner. Shorts and sandals (otherwise known as flip-flops) are the norm with a hat of course to protect from the dangerous UV rays. The deck is packed with chatting adults, excited children and as the sun dips, the mosquito, silently buzzing about siphoning off sweet nibbles from his juicy prey. It s beach time too; we throw the kayak on the roof and pack the Eski with chilled treats and head to one of the many local beaches for a day of simple entertainment with the kids. We seek out the best shade under some of the many Norfolk Island pines which stand majestically along the waters edge and dominate many of the regional parks. Beach cricket is a favourite for all to join in and offers hours of fun for the whole family. The sea, still a little fresh at this time provides a refreshing cool off dip for exhausted players. Bare-foot and sandy we make tracks towards home once the sun has started it s journey North, load up the car, pack in the kids after a fantastic Christmas Day - Kiwi Style! Christmas is Christmas no matter where in the world... Hilary McKee (Neé Hilary Dixon of Dalkey) UPDATE ON SITUATION ON VICO ROAD The following is a written answer to a question from Cllr. C. Smyth at the Meeting of Dun Laoghaire Area Committee on 6th April, 2010. QUESTION: To ask the Manager what are the reasons for the bank collapsing on Vico Road which resulted in the road closure, and when is the completion date of works? REPLY: The County did not carry out an investigation into the cause of the collapse but took immediate action in the aftermath to make the area safe. Following the carrying out of the work to make the area safe, a decision was made to close a portion of the road in the interests of safety of road users. It is considered that the road should not be re-opened until the bank has been repaired and the entire area is declared to be safe by a Structural Engineer. As it is the position of the County Council that responsibility for rectifying the matter lies with a private owner, it is not possible to give an indication as to when the works are likely to be undertaken. The matter is being pursued as vigorously as possible by the Council s Architects and Transportation Departments with a view to having the road re-opened at the earliest opportunity.
