U.S. / SAN JOSÉ Wednesday, December 26 Depart the U.S. to San José, the capital of Costa Rica. Transfer to hotel. Cariari Hotel SAN JOSE / CENTRAL PACIFIC / CARARA NATIONAL PARK Thursday, December 27 Drive to the Central Pacific Coast and on to Carara National Park, one of Costa Rica s most biologically diverse ecosystems and home to the largest population of the endangered scarlet macaw. The reserve is also home to approximately 48% of Costa Rica s avian species. Aboard a safari touring boat, we will search the Tárcoles River for crocodiles and a variety of water birds, including roseate spoonbills, herons, and storks. Also enter an estuary to see four different species of mangrove. Check in to your hotel which is in close proximity to Carara National Reserve. In the late afternoon return to Carara to look for the macaws returning to roost. Villa Lapas B,L,D MANUEL ANTONIO NATIONAL PARK / MONTEVERDE Friday, December 28 Today explore Manuel Antonio National Park. The park, located near Quepos on the Pacific Coast, is considered one of the most beautiful and scenic parks in the entire park system. It combines white sand beaches backed by lush tropical forest. Look for white-faced Take a gentle floating adventure trip down the Corobicí River to look for monkeys, otters, iguanas and birdlife. monkeys, as well as the endangered squirrel monkeys, howler monkeys, two-toed sloths, agoutis, and iguanas. Carara National Park tree frog yaleedtravel.org/costaricafamily18 MONTEVERDE CLOUD FOREST RESERVE Saturday, December 29 The Monteverde Cloud Forest is one of the most outstanding wildlife sanctuaries in Central America. It covers 26,000 acres with more than 2,000 species of plants, 400 species of birds, and 100 different species of mammals. This private reserve is home to the Resplendent Quetzal, considered the most spectacular bird of the Americas. After a hike in the reserve, set out for Selvatura Park, an eco-reserve, set on 1,200 acres of virgin cloud forest. Enjoy a bird s eye view of the magnificent canopy from a combination of suspended bridges and platforms that wind through primary forest. Hotel El Establo B,L,D MONTEVERDE / Sunday, December 30 The morning is free for selfexploration and optional activities at the reserve or in town, including the exhilarating zip line that weaves through pristine forest. Thereafter, depart Monteverde on a fascinating downhill drive to the Pacific Coast and Guanacaste. En route, stop to take a gentle floating adventure trip down the Corobicí River, which is bordered by tropical dry forest, to look for monkeys, otters, iguanas, and birdlife including Roseate Spoonbill, king fishers, White Ibis, and Boat-billed Heron. Lunch is overlooking the beautiful river. Proceed to the North Pacific coast to your hotel located on a secluded bay. Rincón de la Vieja is an active volcano in a period of relative calm. It is composed of nine separate but contiguous volcanic craters. Begin on horseback on friendly ranch horses to the park s main gate. From here, hike through Rincón de la Vieja National Park to see volcanic bubbling mud pots and steaming fumaroles. Along the way, look for the Blue-crowned Motmot and Emerald Toucanet and other birds and wildlife. An alternative transfer to the park s entrance is available for those passengers who do not want to travel by horseback. Tonight, enjoy a festive New Year s celebration. It is specially designed for families (parents and grandparents) with children between the ages of 7 and 17 who are interested in nature and would enjoy exploring and learning about the vegetation and wildlife of some of Costa Rica s finest national parks and reserves. Naturalistled walks and creative activities provide an enriching introduction to Costa Rica s natural history and cultural heritage. It helps to be enthusiastic about outdoor adventure, intellectually curious, and comfortable traveling as part of a group. Typically, the weather is hot and humid in the lowlands (the mid-80s); and spring-like in the highlands. While at the national parks and reserves, there is a daily program of nature exploration, guided rainforest walks, and educational discussions. Travel is by motor coach, van, raft, boat, catamaran and horseback (alternative transportation by van is available for those not wishing to ride horseback) with daily walks of up to two miles in length, sometimes over uneven terrain, at a leisurely pace suitable for nature study and field observation.
