Shanghai Centre Talk Dear Residents, As Spring turns to Summer in Shanghai, the management team at Shanghai Centre extends our best wishes to our long-term residents and newcomers, as well. Many of you may have noticed the positive changes that have resulted from the motor court renovation program that was concluded in April that we hope will continue to add value to the Shanghai Centre experience. The newly retiled walkways and barriers are directing and controlling traffic which has enhanced safety for all of the pedestrians traversing the motor court daily. The Exhibition Plaza, located beneath the Theater in the center of the motor court, will be the location of not only the Farmers Market but also a range of upcoming cultural and commercial displays over the coming months. Everyone may also notice the newly fit out and relocated Resident Lounge on the ground level adjacent to the Starbucks, a space which includes a large, private outdoor balcony suitable for larger groups and children s events, too! In mid-june we again hosted the annual Residents BBQ event, the highlight event of the summer, which was again well attended. And although the rain forced activities indoors, the live music, food and good company once again created a memorable opportunity to reconnect with our fellow residents, neighbors and friends. And lest we not forget the victims of the earthquake in Sichuan on May 12, Shanghai Centre will host a charity event at 7:30 on July 18 in the Theater entitled A Taste of Peking/ Kunqu Opera. The proceeds from the event will be donated to disaster relief for our friends and neighbors in Sichuan Province. I invite you all to join me there! Cover Story A new face for an old friend Unless you have been living under a rock lately, you can t help but have noticed the renovations taking place in the motor court area at the Shanghai Centre. Designed by Atelier Pacific Ltd., in conjunction with general contractors, Zhejiang Jiangong Engineering and MEP consultants, WSP, this grand project stemmed from a combined desire to improve the appearance of the drop-off area and the simple reason of old age and a need for modernisation. The Centre has been a Shanghai landmark for the past 18 years and just like any celebrity, it needed to be reinvented to keep up with current trends. While remaining true to the original building design concept, the area needed to be improved and enhanced. The inspiration was always to return a sense of subtle grandeur to the space that together with the improved circulation routes, would discreetly improve the facility for all visitors to and tenants of the Centre, says Bruce Farquharson, Director of Engineering. The whole process, which still requires some finishing touches, especially to the water features designed by P&A, has taken around seven months and has cost according to Farquharson, many millions of RMB. Although the functions of the space are in general somewhat similar to previously both for vehicle and pedestrian use - a safer environment has been created due to efforts to carefully segregate people and traffic. In particular, the improved signage at Nanjing Xi Lu, the funky, oversized E and W sculptures that clearly indicate the east and west towers and the leveled dropoff platform outside of the hotel plus the new surface finishes and improved lighting by Light Directions all together create a fresh face for this important Shanghai landmark. Further new features include modified stair access from Nanjing Xi Lu which has been designed to help encourage greater use of the central axis of arrival by pedestrians, as well as creating an increased central space around the theatre and basement escalators. This has provided a new potential display area not previously available. From a practical point of view, the creation of this platform, plus that outside the hotel drop-off, were particularly challenging in that the original building slab had a very thin floor cover (which was susceptible to Shanghai Centre July August 3
Centre News cracking) that had to be increased without disrupting the datum levels of the existing escalators. More cosmetic aspects include replacement of all the paving and driveway surfaces with hard-wearing Chinese granites, the return of the faded columns to a more traditional deep-red color and the addition of a ceiling feature over the central part of the motor-court, which together with the new lighting helps accentuate the sense of arrival at this landmark destination. Not only has the motor court area had a facelift, but it is now taking on a new role, that of an exhibition plaza. As Marketing Director, Alex De Ceuster, explains, We see the enlarged exhibition plaza as a showcase for the community. We would like to invite more people into this multi-functional complex as we want everybody to experience the Life at your Doorstep feeling. De Ceuster envisages the site being used for a variety of events as it s a great venue, located right in the heart of Shanghai. In addition, people wanting to hold events at the Centre are dealing with a professional team who understand the varied needs of international clients. For example, some of the Shanghai Centre's international tenants, the many Consulates, have been invited to put up displays on their respective national days or to promote other cultural events. De Ceuster is toying also with the possibility of holding lunch-time concerts for the office crowd to enjoy during their break. The new accent lighting and water fountains will make for more aesthetically pleasing surroundings for these events. Community events are likely to be offered the space for free or at a very minimal rate. Commercial events can also be held at the Exhibition Plaza and of course will be charged the going market rate, but prospective ideas include exhibitions of luxury car brands and press conferences. The new plaza will be open to everybody, subject to the prior approval of the Shanghai Centre Theatre and Marketing Department. The plaza has actually already had its debut with and the opening ceremony of Ticketmaster with NBA player Scottie Pippen and the return of the monthly Farmers Market where a wide variety of vendors sell all kinds of goodies. The Farmers Market has been running for around two and a half years at the Shanghai Centre and occurs monthly through the year, although as De Ceuster reveals, the Centre is thinking of increasing the frequency of the Farmers' Market to once every three weeks, maybe even twice a month. The Farmers' Market exists not only as a community event but as part of the Centre's commitment to providing residents high quality products in order to make their life at the Shanghai Centre of as high a standard as possible. Kidstuff Little Red Riding Hood s visit at the SC The story of a brave little girl beating a hungry wolf came to life once again as kids of all ages celebrated International Children s Day at the Resident s Lounge with a fun puppet show and yummy snacks. The choir is probably the most widely traveled choir in Denmark. Almost every Danish town has been visited and in the course of innumerable concert tours the choir has performed in USA, Canada, Japan, Israel, Russia, Greenland, New Zealand, China, East Africa, Argentina and in almost all European countries. After three practiceraces at the Disk Kart Indoor track, the Alcock family beat the competition by more than three seconds. Summer BBQ party As the weather was not on our side, the 2008 Summer BBQ Party was held inside the Atrium.
