President s Message Dear PMCAA Members and Guests, I am delighted to welcome you to the 2008 PMCAA Annual Convention in Scottsdale Hyatt Regency in Scottsdale, Arizona where we are celebrating 30 years of service and commitment to our community in United States while keeping close ties with our motherland, the city of Patiala where we spent the most precious years of our life and Patiala Medical College that built foundation of our lives for ever. During this gathering in this great city of Scottsdale, I encourage you to share your memories with others, meet with your colleagues and enjoy each other s company. I am sure that you will have very positive experience that you will always remember. Being here in Arizona in July will remind you of Punjab but there will be plenty of pools to cool you down. This year we started with some very clear delineated goals and I am happy to report that we have been successful in achieving all those goals. We brought our organization to the electronic age by launching a comprehensive informational website, www.pmcaa.net, and establishing a database including contact information and email addresses of the membership. With the tireless efforts of our committee members, we were able to get enough industry support, both from medical as well as non-medical companies. Hopefully, we will be in the positive balance after paying off all our expenses. I encourage you all to visit the exhibit booths to show our appreciation to our sponsors. It has been a great honor and privilege to have served you as the 30 th President of Patiala Medical College Alumni Association. In a nutshell, this year has been full of accomplishments. This obviously has been possible only with an exemplary teamwork of our committee members. Our committee members have been very positive and upbeat during various planning meetings throughout the year. Our team started working even before the Annual Convention in Los Angeles last year. We learned a lot from their experience and congratulate that team for doing an excellent job. Finally, I would like to thank my team including my wife, Surinder for making this convention a success. I would especially like to thank Randeep who has been the backbone of our committee and the best organizer in my mind. Without her help, this event would not have been as successful as it has been. I am confident that the upcoming team led by Dr. Jagmohan Sidhu would build further on our success and lead PMCAA to a higher level. Keeping in mind the above lines brought an urge to do something for the humanity and watching my close family friend, Dr. Rajinder Singh doing all this for such a long time encouraged few of us to form an organization which was named Sahaita. The organization whose seed were sowed by the Tsunami disaster and words from Dr. Harkesh Sandhu s daughter Daddy just don t sit, do something, something different than just giving money lead to birth of Sahaita organization registration of under 501 c 3 IRS code in month of Feb, 2005. We saw what Sankara Eye Foundation was doing. Dr. Rajinder Singh in India had been doing the same for long time but without a name and recognition. Sahaita organization has three branches: Sahaita Inc. in USA the parent organization, Sahaita Foundation in Canada and Sahaita India. Sahaita s Vision "That the children in our society are happy, healthy and well educated, that the elderly in our society can live with dignity and self-respect Sahaita s Mission "Hold and support a frail hand; Bring smile on an innocent sad face; Afford dignity to the less fortunate Sahaita s work : Our work basically consist of Care of Elderly and Children In the last three years of its existence the organization has held nearly 25 medical camps in Punjab and Himachal Pradesh and nearly 20 health awareness clinics in Northern California. Last one year we did Sunday clinic at Fremont Gurdwara to guide and educate Punjabi community regarding various diseases especially Diabetes, Hypertension and Heart disease. Just doing basic teaching sometimes can go a long way in relieving the anxiety of the elderly. Some of the camps are sponsored by NRI s and others financed by Sahaita organization. During our camps we have examined over 25000 patients and we have seen how just the basic illnesses are being neglected. People are just ignorant or being misguided by the quacks and undocumented so called doctors. How people spend all the money on seeing the doctors, unwanted tests sometimes and at the end have no money left to buy the medications. Dr. Rajinder Singh who is the backbone of our Gift Of Vision

Program has done thousands of Cataract surgeries and other minor eye surgeries and we are indebted to his greatness and willingness to do whatever it takes to help the poor elderly folks. Our second major project is Gift of Hope under which we are helping over 100 children who are either orphans, disabled, belonging to disabled parents, abandoned or have no financial resources for education or care. We have two institutions where we are involved: 1.Bal Ghar at Talwandi Dham near Mullanpur where we are sponsoring children for education and care and it is a model institute where the love and affection given to children is beyond description. This has basic infrastructure provided by Sant Bhuriwale and his disciples. 2.Bal Bhawan in Sarabha nagar, Ludhiana where we are more involved and it is an institution run under red cross. Three years ago they ran into financial problem and was in news so we are supporting it. The children here are split between those who are Deaf and Mute and some children whose parents are disabled or mentally compromised and cannot take care of them. From time to time we get children from other institutions who are closed or temporary closed. We have just opened a New school at the premises for these children as the Government school s education was despicable. This is a big project and Sahaita India is looking after this. 3. Sahaita is also helping other facilities who from time to time need help and among them an Institution at Padialla near Kurali, Punjab Home for Helpless, Mentally/Physically Disabled, Orphan, Missing, Old Age, Widows and Unclaimed is worth mentioning.
