OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER MEMORANDUM August 30, 2013 TO: FROM: Honorable Mayor and City Council Alan Tandy, City Manager AT/ al SUBJECT: General Information In observation of Labor Day, City offices will be closed on Monday, September 2 nd. Good News As noted previously, the ribbon cutting for Phase II of the State Farm Sports Village took place last Friday afternoon. It was an upbeat event, and very well attended, as evidenced in the attached photographs. At last week s Kern Green Awards Dinner, Rabobank Arena, Theater and Convention Center, along with San Joaquin Community Hospital Ice Center won the Keep Kern Green Award in the Water Conservation Division. Congratulations go to Ed Dorsey and Adam Miller, who led the way with the water conservation efforts in those facilities. Great Job! The Southern San Joaquin Branch of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) selected the Westside Parkway as this year s recipient of the Excellence Award for Outstanding Transportation Project. The award will be formally presented at a banquet on September 26 th. The employees who deserve recognition for this exceptional effort are too numerous to mention, but my hat is off to all of them for a job well done. We are pleased to confirm that this past Monday, August 26 th, the first 14 units of the Creekview Villas condominium complex were listed for sale. These are brand new modern units, some of which front directly onto the new Mill Creek improvements. More information can be found at: www.creekviewvillas.com. Miscellaneous News We have all been anxiously watching the news reports about the devastating fire taking place in and near the northwest boundary of Yosemite National Park. Resources are on scene from a great many cities to aid in the effort to contain this fire, and some of those resources are our own troops. Chief Greener reports that nine of our personnel are amongst those battling the blaze. We send them, and all of the other brave firefighters and medical unit leaders, our best thoughts for a speedy containment and subsequent return to their homes.

General Information August 30, 2013 Page 2 All spray parks will stay open daily from Noon to 7:00 p.m. through next Monday, September 2 nd. After that time, through the end of September, they will be open during the same hours on weekends only. The Sister City Gardens, Phase B project is coming along nicely. We are on track for completion at the end of October. The Gardens in this phase will pay respect to Santiago de Querétaro, Mexico and Amritsar, India. Attached are some pictures that depict the progress being made. We were disappointed to learn that our efforts to obtain a grant for some of our urban greening projects were not successful. Staff submitted applications for the Centennial Corridor Linear Park, Hageman Bicycle/Pedestrian Trail and the 24 th Street Urban Greening. We will continue to seek out other opportunities. DEPARTMENT OF RECREATION & PARKS DIANNE HOOVER, DIRECTOR Department of Recreation and Parks Date: August 27, 2013 To: From: Subject: Alan Tandy, City Manager Dianne Hoover, Director of Recreation & Parks Vandalism and Parking Issues at the Hill House Council Referral No. 413 Councilmember Maxwell requested that the Police Department increase patrols in the area of the Hill House as a result of the vandalism that takes place. He suggested that staff also look at what may be parking issues behind the facility as a result of the recently completed Mill House. Staff was also directed to meet with the management of the Hill House to discuss ways to mitigate the problems. Recreation and Parks staff met with the manager of Hill House on Tuesday, August 20, 2013. His main concerns were lack of lighting along the Mill Creek corridor and South of 17 th Street, no lighting on the walk bridge over the canal and the need for improved lighting along 17 th behind the Hill House. Staff referred the Mill Creek lights to General Services since it appears that only half of the existing lights were working. Additional lighting on the walk bridge and 17 th Street was referred to Public Works for their review.
