--PASSENGERS (IN MILLION)-- --PASSENGERS (IN MILLION)-- INTERNATIONAL AIR TRAFFIC STATISTICS October-December, 2016 * There are 92 scheduled international carriers - 5 Indian carriers and 87 Foreign carriers. Currently India has air connectivity with 56 countries through more than 300 routes. The scheduled international passenger traffic for the fourth quarter (October- December) of the year 2016 stands at 13.8 million while the international passenger traffic for the corresponding period in the year 2015 stood at 12.6 million thereby witnessing a growth of 9.7 per cent. 1 1 1 Chart 1: YEAR ON YEAR GROWTH IN 12.6 4.3 4.5 4.1 It has been observed that all 2015 2016 the three months of the fourth quarter of the year 2016 witnessed a positive growth in terms of the total number of international passengers carried as compared to the corresponding months in the fourth quarter of the year 2015 (Chart 1). MARKET SHARE As can be seen from chart 3, the share of Indian and Foreign carriers in the total international passenger traffic during the fourth quarter (October-December) of the year 2016 stands at 38 per cent and 62 per cent respectively. Chart 3: MARKET SHARE (%) OF INDIAN & FOREIGN CARRIERS IN TERMS OF In the same Quarter (Q4) of the year 2015, the share of Indian and Foreign carriers was 36 and 64 percent respectively. Top ten international carriers 62.3 37.7 accounted for almost 60 per cent of the international passenger traffic during the fourth quarter of the year 2016. Jet airways carried the INDIAN CARRIERS FOREIGN CARRIERS maximum number of international passengers followed by Air India and Emirates airlines. All the 5 Indian Carriers viz. Air India, Air India Express, Indigo, Jet Airways and SpiceJet operating on International Routes, find place in the top 10 list (Chart 4). It may also be mentioned here that all the foreign carriers in the top 10 list originate from Gulf Countries. More than half of the total passengers coming to India are accounted for by the countries in the region- Africa & Middle East (Chart 5). Same pattern is observed for the number of India s outbound passengers i.e. more than half of the total outbound passengers are accounted for by the countries in the region- Africa & Middle East (Chart 6). Among European Countries, United Kingdom is one of the hottest destinations as there is about 5 percent international passengers travel to and from UK. Out of the 24 Indian cities from where international passengers Embark/ Disembark, 5 Indian cities accounted for most (approximately 70 per cent) of the international passenger traffic (Chart 8). Delhi tops the position in this category with a share of 26.7 per cent followed by Mumbai (21.7 per cent share) and Chennai (8.6 per cent share). Domestic and foreign carriers connect India to 56 countries through more than 300 Routes. Out of these routes only 10 Routes accounted for approximately 20 per cent of the total international passenger traffic during the fourth quarter of the year 2016. Out of the total number of scheduled international carriers, top ten carriers accounted for almost 70 per cent of the international freight traffic during the fourth quarter of the year 2016. Emirates carried the maximum freight with 14.5 per cent market share followed by Qatar airways (10.2 per cent market share) and Jet airways (1 per cent market share) during Jet airways and Air India are among top five scheduled freight carriers with market shares of 1 per cent and 7.3 per cent respectively during the fourth quarter of the year 2016. Other Indian Carriers, carry approximately percent of the total international freight traffic. 4

If we look at India s outbound freight traffic, Africa & Middle East tops the position with a share of 53.5 per cent followed by Europe (21.4 per cent share) and Asia Pacific (16.8 per cent share) during the fourth quarter of the year 2016 (Chart 12).
