HISTORY & GARDENS OF THE CARIBBEAN ROUNDTRIP ANTIGUA ABOARD SEA CLOUD II WITH PATRICK BOWE JANUARY 13 TO 20, 2013

Dear National Trust Travelers, Sail with us aboard the elegant Sea Cloud II, as we celebrate the centuries-old tradition of Caribbean gardening, visiting historic plantation houses and a restored governor s mansion, as well as contemporary and botanic gardens. From lush orchids to spiny cacti, no two Caribbean gardens are alike, and our shore excursions will reflect a wide variety of experiences. We are privileged to be joined by Dublin-based horticulturist Patrick Bowe, author of the Gardens of the Caribbean. A sought-after lecturer and popular National Trust study leader, Patrick continues to delight travelers with his witty presentations, both formal and on site. Our voyage begins in Antigua, where we embark Sea Cloud II and sail for colorful St. Barth s, with its stunning white-sand beaches. Call next at Tortola and visit the lush Governor s Garden with its fine harbor view. On Virgin Gorda, enjoy a swim at The Baths or sample a rum punch at the exclusive Bitter End Yacht Club. Then step ashore on the Dutch island of St. Eustatius for a private architectural tour and some leisure time in this birder s paradise. On Nevis, visit the childhood home of Alexander Hamilton and stroll in the island s spectacular botanic garden before continuing to the Iles des Saintes with its charming Colonial-style capital. An otional prelude is offered in Antigua, including three nights at the charming St. James Club. Life aboard Sea Cloud II has no comparison. Her friendly staff, luxurious accommodations and fine dining create an onboard ambiance of relaxed elegance. There will be time at sea to experience the thrill of sailing aboard this three-masted barque and watch as the young crew practices the age-old art of setting the sails by hand. TORTOLA & VIRGIN GORDA ST. EUSTATIUS NEVIS ST. BARTH S ANTIGUA We hope you will join us as we discover the History and Gardens of the Caribbean in the congenial company of alumni from Yale and Harvard, on what promises to be an exceptional journey. Sincerely, ILES DES SAINTES CARIBBEAN SEA Scott Gerloff Director, National Trust Tours The National Trust for Historic Preservation is a private, nonprofit membership organization dedicated to saving historic places and revitalizing America s communities. VIRGIN GORDA, BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS Wednesday, January 16Tender ashore at Virgin Gorda for a morning excursion to The Baths, gigantic boulders piled willy-nilly along the sandy beach, which create small pools and interesting cave-like structures. In the afternoon sail to the North Sound of Virgin Gorda. You may wish to go ashore to visit the famous Bitter End Yacht Club before a barbeque dinner on deck. Colorful island homes, St. Barthélemy. MIAMI 1 ANTIGUA Sunday, January 13Fly from Miami to Antigua and transfer to Sea Cloud II for your seven-night cruise. ST. BARTHELEMY Monday, January 14 Following a relaxing morning at sea, arrive after lunch in small but cosmopolitan St. Barth s. Experience the chic French savoir faire as you stroll past the cafés and boutiques. Swimmers will have an opportunity to enjoy one of many beautiful white-sand beaches. Return to the ship in the late afternoon. The captain will host the group for welcome cocktails and dinner this evening. TORTOLA, BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS Tuesday, January 15Today we visit Tortola, the largest of the British Virgin Islands. See the J.R. O Neal Botanic Garden, a four-acre property that includes a lush array of indigenous and exotic tropical plants. Continue to the Governor s House for a walk through the Governor s Garden, laden with palm trees and various flowering plants, as well as a spectacular view overlooking Road Harbour. Schmidt Botanical Garden. Sea Cloud II sails in the early afternoon. Iles des Saintes, Guadeloupe. NEVIS Friday, January 18 Arrive at the island of Nevis, birthplace and childhood home of Alexander Hamilton. Visit the Alexander Hamilton house then continue to Nevis s spectacular botanic garden, whose five acres contain a variety of tropical plants, orchid terraces and a rainforest conservancy. OPTIONAL PRELUDE ANTIGUA January 10 to 13, 2013 Antigua is a jewel among the group of Leeward Islands, so named because of their orientation away from the prevailing winds. Spend three nights at the charming St. James Club, situated on its own peninsula with ocean views and white sandy beaches. Discover the southern part of the island with Patrick Bowe, who will inform us about local garden history. Visit the restored Governor General s residence overlooking English Harbour and St. John s Anglican Cathedral, tour a black sugar farm and, by boat, explore the off-shore island of Barbuda, known for its bird sanctuary. No refunds are given for cancellation on day of departure or after, or for unused portions of tour. Trip cancellation insurance is strongly recommended. Air cancellation penalties will be assessed in accordance with airline regulations. NOTE: Neither the National Trust for Historic Preservation nor AAA accepts liability for any airline cancellation penalties incurred with the purchase of non-refundable tickets. In the case of a cancellation due to shortage of participants, AAA will attempt to notify all participants at least 45 days prior to departure. The right is reserved by AAA to cancel any tour prior to departure for any reason. In such case, refund of the cost of the trip shall constitute full settlement with the passenger. RESPONSIBILITY CLAUSE The National Trust for Historic Preservation, in order to make an educational opportunity available to its members, has arranged for AAA to organize our tour and procure carriage, accommodations and other tour services from other parties. Once tour members register for the tour, they must contact and otherwise deal with AAA. Neither AAA nor any other suppliers of tour services are joint venturers with or in any way controlled by the National Trust. The National Trust can undertake no responsibility for the accuracy of representations in tour promotion literature, for tour reservations, accommodations, transportation or safety, nor any other aspect of the tour except preservation-related educational programs and the liaison between the National Trust and other preservationists. Consequently, the National Trust shall not be construed to make any covenants or warranties, expressed or implied, regarding our tours, and shall not be liable in any way for any personal injury, death, property damage or loss incurred by any person in connection with our tours. AAA and/or their agents assume no responsibility or liability in connection with the service of any train, carriage, aircraft or other conveyance that may be used wholly or in part in the performance of their duty to the passengers; neither will they be responsible for any act, error or omission, or for any injury, loss, accident, delay or irregularity that may be occasioned by reason of any defect in any vehicle, or through neglect or default of any company or person engaged in carrying out the purpose for which tickets or coupons are issued. In the event it becomes necessary or advisable for the comfort or well-being of the passengers, or any reason whatsoever, to alter the itinerary or arrangements, such alterations may be made without penalty to the tour operators. Additional expenses, if any, shall be borne by the passengers. However, when the tour departs the U.S., no refund can be made for any feature of the program not used by the passenger during operation of the tour. The agent reserves the right to decline to accept or retain any person as a member of the tour at any time. In such case the refund will be limited to the actual cost of the unused land tour services.
