It was in service from 1928 to 1937, making 590 flights and travelling over a million miles during its lifespan. In 1932 the Graf began five years of regular services between Germany and Brazil. It made 64 trips to Brazil during this period, and at its height was operating a fortnightly service, becoming the world's first regularly scheduled, nonstop, intercontinental airline route. Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin (1838-1917) German general who is best remembered for pioneering the development of Zeppelins. He served as a pilot in the Russian Baltic Fleet during WWI and later immigrated to the USA where he founded the pioneering Seversky Aero Corporation. SGS191 Alexander P. de Seversky signed plain American cover 75 Edwin Albert Link (1904-1981) Pioneer in aviation who is best remembered for inventing the flight simulator. His technology became available for widespread commercial use in 1929 and was initially called the called the Blue Box or Link Trainer. ARA151 1979 50th anniversary of flight simulation signed by the technologies inventor Edwin Link 0 20 for 5 months Walter Hinton was a legendry aviator who first achieved recognition in 1919 when he piloted a Curtiss Flying Boat across the Atlantic; the first aircraft to complete a transatlantic flight. He continued to push the aviation frontier throughout the 1920s and 30s by completing such feats as exploring the Arctic by balloon, piloting the first flight from North to South America, and travelling the Amazon by hydroplane. Hinton's wide spread fame led to him becoming a guest speaker on the popular American Aviation Tours. ARA108 1931 Walter Hinton signed 1931 Service to Aviation US Tour which Hinton was a part of, flown, our choice 0 50 for 3 months The collection includes three vintage postcards of the tour, two showing Grahame-White in his Farman Waterplane and the third illustrating a Zeppelin heading towards the coast; plus an original newspaper cutting. The star item is a passenger flight souvenir which has been signed by Claude Grahame-White. The tour travelled to 121 towns and cities across the country, mostly, but not exclusively those which where situated on the coast. The tour was financed by the sponsorship of the Daily Mail and organised by the Grahame-White Aviation Company. The inspiration behind the tour was to promote, educate, and boost public interest in aviation. SGE032B Amelia Earhart signed 1929 cover with black first amphibian flight illustration and Detroit, Michigan postmark 00 Fantastic Flight Signatures Amelia Earhart Amelia Earhart was the first female pilot to fly solo across the Atlantic. She took off from Harbour Grace, Newfoundland on the 20th of May, and landed in Culmore, Northern Ireland 14 hours and 56 minutes later. On June 1st 1937 Earhart took off in an attempt to set a global circumnavigation record. Tragically, between Lae and Howland Island, Earhart, along with her co-pilot disappeared completely and to this day no trace of them or the plane has been found. SGE032D Amelia Earhart signed 1929 cover with green first amphibian flight illustration and Cleveland, Ohio postmark 1200 Sir Alan Cobham Sir Alan Cobham was an English pilot particularly famous for his pioneering of long distance flights. He served with the Royal Flying Corps in WWI and after the war became a test pilot for the de Havilland aircraft company. Cobham was a true celebrity of his day with over 60,000 fans watching him land in Melbourne on completion of his 1926 England to Australia flight. His achievements were recognised with the awarding of the Gold Medal by the Fèdèration Aèronautique Internationale and his name lives on today as a true pioneer. After transferring to the Naval Air Station in Lakehurst, New Jersey in 1923 he was handed his first command, the USS Los Angeles, in 1926, before later commanding the USS Akron. Rosendahl also served as an American observer on the German Zeppelin Hindenburg. He was in command at Lakehurst when the Hindenburg was destroyed at the base in 1937 and led the rescue effort.
