Her research and teaching focus on industrial ecology, business/ environment issues, waste management, and urban sustainability. Primary research interests are the study of industrial symbiosis involving geographically based exchanges of materials, energy, water and wastes within networks of businesses; the potential of industrial ecology in emerging economies; measurement of the urban metabolism of cities by studying the flows of material and energy into and out of urban regions. Professor Chertow has been working in southeast Asia since her appointment to the founding faculty of the Masters of Science in Environmental Management Program at the National University of Singapore in 2001. She teaches Business and Environment at NUS and is particularly interested in the way physical resources are used and exchanged in the region and the resulting environmental impacts. She was one of three professors who taught in Yale s recent Redpath Seminar on the Future of Asia. Prior to Yale, Marian spent ten years in environmental business and state and local government. She advises two environmental start-ups and has been serving on the environmental council of two large companies and as a policy and technology advisor at the Environmental Protection Agency.
