Outdoor Club of East York 2018 SPRING-SUMMER-FALL CALENDAR April 1 to November 30

WELCOME TO OUR 2018 SPRING-SUMMER-FALL PROGRAM NEW MEMBERS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME! One of the great things about a Club like this is the wide variety of friendly people you meet. People interested in joining should visit our website for the online application form. www.outdoorclubofeastyork.ca > Join the Club or www.ocey.ca > Join the Club Membership is very reasonable: Adult: $30 per year Couple: $50 per year Our online application process accepts payment through PayPal (through your PayPal account or by credit card). Or you can send a cheque to the address below. Here s how to contact us: Address: Outdoor Club of East York P.O. Box 65126, RPO Chester Toronto, ON M4K 3Z2 Website: www.outdoorclubofeastyork.ca or www.ocey.ca Email: info@ocey.ca GUESTS Members are welcome to bring non-member guests to up to two OCEY events. After that, we would expect people to join the Club. Please confirm their participation with the trip organizer prior to the event. Also ensure that your guest is properly equipped and fit enough for the level of difficulty. For accommodation, ski buses, theatre, etc., the member who is registering the guest will be responsible for a no-show of the reserved place/seat. Non-members who would like to attend a trip but do not know an OCEY member should contact the Club at the info@ocey.ca email address. Everyone attending an OCEY event or trip must sign our waiver form and give emergency contact information. ii

WEB-BASED CALENDAR Traditionally, the Outdoor Club of East York (OCEY) produced two Calendars per year, showing its upcoming events for the next four months (Winter) and eight months (Spring/Summer/Fall). Not surprisingly, over the period covered by those Calendars, there would be a number of changes, additions and deletions. Members were informed of these through the regular Updater emails. A year ago, we moved to a new Website which features an easily updated online Calendar in list or month form. Logged-in members can click through to full event details and contact information. For some trips especially the ski buses members also register online and, where applicable, make online payments through PayPal (by PayPal account or credit card). The website Calendar is updated regularly, to stay up to date with changes, additions and deletions. While we will continue to send out Updater emails, the website Calendar is your direct access to the most up-to-date information available. Log in and check out the online Calendar often at www.outdoorclubofeastyork.ca > Calendar or www.ocey.ca > Calendar SIGN-UP POLICY Except for those scheduled for the last two weeks of April, registrations for trips and events advertised in the calendar will not be accepted by the organizers until Monday, March 12 th at 7:00 pm. The rationale for this is that: a) The emailed pdf and full electronic versions on the website are released just before or on the same day as the Club s Information Night. The delayed registration date ensures that all members have the same opportunity to see the calendar before sign-ups are accepted. b) The Information Nights are advertised to encourage new members. It would be disappointing for them and not a good reflection on the club if the trips were already fully booked by that event. Enjoy! iii

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT As I read through our 2018 Spring-Summer-Fall program, I am amazed at the number and variety of events a club of our size offers its members. Whether it s paddling, cycling, hiking, urban events or a bit of everything you are sure to find something to help chase away those winter blues. Thank you to all the volunteers who have put our winter program together. Volunteers are the lifeblood of our club. We are always looking for people to lead trips, serve on the executive, or contribute in other capacities. Please consider pitching in. I am sure you will find it a fun and rewarding experience. Contact any member of the executive if you would like to get involved. Have a great Spring, Summer and Fall. Scott MESSAGE FROM THE URBAN EVENTS COORDINATOR We certainly have lots of interesting urban events for our Spring-Summer-Fall schedule! There is so much to do in our city and surrounding urban areas concerts, outdoor theatre, restaurant outings, city and historical walks, sports, dance and art shows. There s sure to be something to interest every member. Members are free to bring non-member guests to up to two Club events over the year. Everyone attending must sign our waiver form and give emergency contact information. Thanks to all those who stepped up to organize these outings. We are always looking for more ideas and leaders. If you are interested, please contact one of us our contact information is on page 1 of this book. We can easily add new events, letting members know through the Updater emails and through our online Events Calendar at www.ocey.ca. Looking forward to seeing lots of members and guests out for the events. Eileen MESSAGE FROM THE HIKING COORDINATOR With the help of the club s many volunteer leaders, we have put together an exciting hiking program for the 2018 season, with lots of choices to get you out on the trails. From beginner to hard core, there is something for everyone. There are hikes on the Bruce Trail, on trails closer to home, as well as in local parks and ravines. Hikes range in length from 8 km to 25 km. Often they include a visit to a gallery or pub after the hike. The popular Wednesday evening hike and pub stop continues this year. New are the Thursday morning walks which are either in the city or nearby. Although most start at 10 AM carefully check the start times as some vary due to events on the walk. 2

Always popular are the multi-day hikes with Algonquin (Wolf s Den), The Adirondacks, Killbear and Woolner House being annual favourites. New this year is a visit to Lake Superior Provincial Park. Whichever trip you prefer be sure to register early. Thank you to all of the members who have volunteered to lead hikes. The volunteers are what makes OCEY a great club. Please take the time to read the information below. If you have any doubts about your abilities or the difficulty of the hike, please contact the trip organizer before signing up. See you on the trails. Happy hiking! HIKING LEVELS Tom General guidelines for our hiking trips. If you are unsure from the trip description, please contact the organizer. Easy These are city walks and some out of town hikes with easier terrain. You will walk at a relaxed pace, often stopping to look at things of interest along the route. Distances are shorter, usually less than 10 kms. Easy hikes are suitable for beginners. Moderate These hikes cover longer distances, in the range of 12-15 km. You will walk at a steady pace, with fewer stops. Expect some rough or steep sections. They require a reasonable level of fitness and stamina and are suitable for those with some hiking experience. Sturdy hiking boots are recommended. Strenuous These hikes cover longer distances, generally over 15 km. You will walk at a steady pace with few stops. Expect rougher terrain, lots of hills, and a faster pace. They require a good level of fitness and stamina and are suitable for experienced hikers. Sturdy hiking boots are a must. Club Policy You must be a member to participate. However, guests may participate when accompanied by a member. Please ensure that your guest is properly equipped and fit enough to complete the hike, and confirm their participation with the trip organizer prior to the hike. All participants must sign the waiver form and provide emergency contact information prior to the start of the hike. Important Information for Hikers Each hiker is responsible for their own safety. Be realistic about your experience and level of fitness when signing up for hikes and follow the instructions of the trip organizer. Wear footwear appropriate for the level and terrain of the hike. Bring a lunch, snacks and a minimum of one litre of water in cooler weather, two litres on hot summer days. Bring rainwear and extra warm clothing, hypothermia can happen. 3

Carry a whistle, a cell phone and a personal first aid kit to care for foot problems such as blisters, minor cuts and scrapes, along with Tylenol, Advil and/or any other medications that you may expect to need. Carry a completed Health Information Form in a baggy in an outside pocket of your knapsack. This form can be found on the Cub Forms page and/or in the print version. Be on time. If you have to cancel, advise the trip organizer in plenty of time so that the group is not left waiting for you. If you are riding in a member s car, bring a change of footwear and plastic bags for muddy boots and clothing. Volunteer your contribution to the car pool costs. Don t make the driver ask for it. The club s car pool guidelines can be found on Car Pool Information page. Tom MESSAGE FROM THE CYCLING COORDINATOR OCEY s cycling season officially opens at the beginning of April. From then through until about mid-november our trip leaders will be offering over 70 rides to meet every ability and interest. Please note that Tuesday evening cycles will start at 6:30 PM. This will make it easier for us to extend the season as the daylight hours get shorter into September. Check the Events section of the website regularly and read the Updater for trip additions, changes, and cancellations. Please read the Club s Cycling Policy carefully. If in doubt as to your level of ability, call the trip organizer and talk it over. Before joining any ride, and particularly before your first ride of the season, take your bike for a thorough maintenance check. Avoid flat tires by replacing yours if they look worn. Little things mean a lot when you are out on the road with a group. As a long-time club member, I am always impressed by how many members step-up to lead events. Thank you. I encourage others to become leaders and share favourite cycling routes. It is fun to explore Toronto and beyond by bike. Have a great summer and, above all, cycle safely! Joanne Club Policy You must be a member to participate. However, guests may participate when accompanied by a member. Please confirm guest participation with the trip organizer prior to the ride. 4

All participants must sign the waiver form and provide emergency contact information prior to participating in the ride. All participants must wear a bicycle helmet. Lights, reflectors, and bells must be used as required by law. Other Important Items Carry tools with you that fit your bike. This includes Allen keys, wrenches, a spare inner tube, a patch kit, a tire pump, spokes and cables. While trip organizers and other club riders are often generous with their time and expertise, they are not free mechanics. Be prepared to help yourself. Water. Regardless of the month, you can never have too much. Proper riding. Pay attention. Ride single file on busier roads. If slowing or turning, signal so fellow riders and drivers will know your intention. Wear bright or reflective clothing see and be seen. Cycling shorts really are more comfortable. Carry personal identification and emergency contact information. Be on time for the ride. If you do not plan on completing the entire route, advise the trip organizer so the group is not left wondering where you are. If you have registered for a ride and then have to cancel, advise the trip organizer so that the group is not left waiting for you to arrive. Stay alert! Watch for potholes, changes in the road surface, the gravel shoulder, and dogs. Don t make sudden moves that take you into the path of another cyclist, or a car. MESSAGE ABOUT PADDLING The club is pleased to present some great canoeing/kayaking trips this summer. We are sure there is something for everyone with a mix of day trips, long weekends and multi -day trips. There are also hiking trips at Killbear and Lake Superior Provincial Parks which offer additional paddling opportunities. There are trips for both beginners and those with a little more experience. If a beginner one trip to consider is joining the Algonquin Park Voyageur trip in August as each canoe carrying 7-9 paddlers. Our program is totally dependent on the generosity of members who offer to be trip organizers. We understand that organizing a trip is a big responsibility and a fair amount of work, but we do need more people to volunteer to assist with the program. Remember that there are many knowledgeable and experienced members that can help, as well as excellent books (i.e. Kevin Callan) and if you wish to get training, the club can assist with the cost. 5

Take note that you don t need to own a canoe to participate. OCEY has one canoe and one tandem kayak (see Canoe Reservation Policy in this calendar). One can also rent canoes or kayaks from other sources (see retail canoe rentals). Under club information there is also a great video on how to tie down a canoe. Please take the time to read the messages below on rentals, instruction and club policy, and the policy on Guests on the Inside Front Cover. I hope you all have an enjoyable paddling season with the Club Canoe Instruction For Canoe instruction by qualified instructors, go to ORCKA at www.orca.on.ca or Paddle Canada at www.paddlingcanada.com. Also check out information boards at stores like Mountain Equipment Co-op (MEC), and The Complete Paddler, or the outdoor outfitters that rent or sell canoes like Algonquin Outfitters, or organizations like Harbourfront Canoe & Kayak Centre. For Kayak instruction, contact James Seabrook, a qualified instructor and OCEY member at twocre8fun@hotmail.com or (416) 576-7332. Paddling Requirements Carefully read the following information about paddler levels and safety guidelines, then check out the listed trips and call the trip organizer for more information and to register for a trip. If you don t have a paddling partner, trip organizers will assist in pairing up people. Safety is our main concern so to fully enjoy paddling, take responsibility for your own learning. Some trip organizers are offering basic instruction. You can also find retail sources that offer canoe and kayak instruction. Canoe Safety Guidelines Risk Advisory. For those new to canoeing or kayaking, one should be aware that there are risks associated with this sport. Although the Club has an excellent safety record, you must remember that things can go wrong (weather, personal injuries, dehydration, sun-burn, heat stroke, hypothermia etc.). Although your safety cannot be guaranteed, you can minimize or eliminate most problems by recognizing the dangers and knowing how to avoid them. The less experienced you are the more likely you are to get hurt and/or place others at risk. Proper training/instruction and being fully informed is of the utmost importance in any water sport. Basic Rules By law, each boat is required to carry: a PFD (personal flotation device) for each person on board, a spare paddle, a bailer, a whistle, a flashlight and a minimum 15 metre length of buoyant rope. If you show up for a club trip without these minimum requirements, you will not be allowed to participate. In addition to 6

waivers, each trip organizer will have an incident report sheet that must be filled out in the event of an injury, verbal assault or any other serious incident. Each trip will have a lead boat and a sweep boat, to be designated by the organizer. Do not pass the lead boat. Stay within sight and sound of the group. Control your own boat. Do not ram or grab onto someone else s boat. When approaching an obstacle, maintain your position in line and don t crowd the boat in front of you. By charging ahead, you may just be the first boat over the waterfalls! It is club policy that all participants must wear their lifejackets at all times when on the water. Helmets are required for whitewater trips. Club Canoe/Kayak Reservations OCEY owns one canoe and a tandem kayak, available for use by members for Club trips only. Paddles, PFDs, and tie-down straps (for tying boat to car) are included. The canoes/kayak are stored at the homes of a Club member and you can call them in advance to reserve, pick up and drop off the boats. This volunteer is not responsible for helping you load the canoe/kayak or teaching you how to tie it onto the car (see video on club general information section of website). You will be held responsible for the cost of repairs or replacement if the canoe/kayak is badly damaged or destroyed. If you have to cancel your reservation please notify the trip organizer and the person storing the canoe/kayak immediately, so that someone else can reserve it. Please Note: The latest canoe purchased is Rolaflex material and may be used for whitewater. There is no cost to use the club Canoes and Kayak. If you are a partner sharing a canoe with a Club member who has his/her own canoe, you are responsible for sharing the cost for the use of the member s canoe at an agreed upon rate by the parties, and also responsible for half the cost of any damage to their canoe occurred on that trip. For Club Canoe Reservations, contact: Carol Visser (416) 570-6921 or carolvisser57@gmail.com Please note: Carol volunteers to store the Club canoe. They are happy to help you when you arrive to get the canoe but be considerate, call early to book a canoe and ask them whether they are available to help on the day. Thanks again to all trip organizers for their hard work in organizing these events. WEAR YOUR PFD! * * * * * SOCIAL OCEY will participate at wine and hotdog outdoor barbeques and similar functions on the same no-charge basis as SCCSC members. These functions are an important part of the social aspect of a successful ski program. On the final ski bus day, SCCSC will be hosting a Wine and Cheese event at the Chalet at Scenic Caves; OCEY members are also welcome to participate in this event. 7

. SUNDAY CAR POOLING EVENTS During the ski season, a Sunday Winter outing will be held most weekends in a wilderness area or park near the city. Terrain will vary depending on the location. Most of the wilderness area activities will be restricted to fit beginners and experienced skiers. Depending on snow conditions, we will be "off-track" skiing, snowshoeing or hiking for about 3 hours. If we are skiing, ordinary cross-country skis will be suitable. Bring lunch, plenty to drink and warm clothing. The exact location of each outing, the type of outing and the co-ordinator will be posted on the website and also sent out via the Updater and by email to registrants as they become available. PLEASE register online for the outing if you intend to come and indicate if you need a ride or can offer one. You can also contact the skiing co-ordinator directly. Online registrants will be updated by email regarding any last-minute changes. TRIP ADDITIONS, CHANGES AND CANCELLATION For all types of trips, please check the website (www.ocey.ca/calendar) for new additions, as well as changes, cancellations and last-minute availability prior to going to an event. In addition, trip leaders will make every effort to contact members who have registered for any event to let them know of any change to that event. * * * * * 8

GENERAL POLICIES CAR POOL TRIP POLICIES N.B. The Standard Automobile Insurance policy as legislated by the Provincial Government provides coverage for volunteer drivers. Drivers may accept reimbursement for reasonable driving expenses including fuel and vehicle wear and tear without being considered to be carrying paying passengers. The cost of gas plus 7 cents per kilometre should be shared amongst all the occupants of the vehicle including the driver. This guideline is based on the minimum operating cost from the CAA website and does not cover such fixed costs as insurance and licenses. Register by calling the organizer of the trip by the Thursday before the trip or the date indicated. Let the organizer know if you need a ride, or can offer one; he or she will give you details of where to meet and what you need to bring. Car Pool Etiquette Be on time! The times given in the calendar are expected departure times. Allow at least 15 minutes for organizing and loading. Bring clean shoes to wear on the return trip and a plastic bag for wet or muddy boots or outerwear. Drinking and eating in the car should be only with the permission of the driver. Check that you have all your belongings with you when you leave the car. Volunteer the car pool fee the driver should not have to ask for it. Please have exact cash for the car pool. Offer the fee prior to start of return trip. Remember fuel is about one third or less of all costs of running a car, expect to contribute more than just a share of the gas. VOLUNTEER LEADERS DISCRETION All trip organizers have the right to exercise their own discretion as to who they will accept on their trips, based on such factors as safety of the group, trip difficulty level, competency, physical ability, and past experience. 9

HUMAN RIGHTS POLICY The Outdoor Club of East York is dedicated to the enjoyment of outdoor activities, and maintaining an atmosphere of mutual respect between our members. The Club has procedures for dispute resolution and sanctions for members who do not respect the rights of others. Concerns regarding human rights should be reported only to the President or the Vice-President and they will endeavour to respond with the utmost confidentiality. PRIVACY POLICY The club has adopted the following Privacy Policy: E-mail addresses and other information about members, subscribers and website visitors will be kept private. This will be used only for purposes of monitoring trends in the group s activities and for contacting the members or subscribers for renewals, organizing activities, or for delivering the club s email Updates. Except as required by law, they will not be given, sold, rented or loaned to any other person or organization without first obtaining permission. The club executive can change this policy. The policy and any revisions will be published in the club activities schedule and posted on the club website. INSURANCE The OCEY has General Liability Insurance which provides coverage for guests as well as for members. Guests do not have to become OCEY members to participate in any OCEY event, but simply sign in as non-members on the OCEY Waiver Forms. Both members and guests are to sign in to activate the insurance coverage. The insurance does not cover events outside of Canada. Consequently, all out-of-country events will be listed as Non-Insurable OCEY Events in the Calendar. All event organizers and assistant organizers (who may volunteer at the event) are to be clearly indicated on the OCEY Waiver Forms. These forms should be forwarded to the Event Coordinator for their records. In the event of a mishap, an Incident Report must be completed and forwarded to the Event Coordinator as soon as possible after the incident. All members (including event organizers and assistant organizers) have limited coverage under OCEY s General Liability insurance and OCEY s Directors and Officers insurance policies. All members are strongly advised to have their own Homeowner s or Tenant s Insurance to obtain fuller liability coverage. 10
