SOLANA BEACH CIVIC AND HISTORICAL SOCIETY FROM THE DESK OF YOUR PRESIDENT Wishing you a Happy New Year! Before we move on to 2018, I'd like to take a look back at a historical memory from my past. The date was December 13th 1967, 50 years ago! I was in the 6th grade attending Skyline School in Solana Beach. I was looking out the window instead of paying attention in Math Class and what to my wondering eyes did appear? Snow in Solana Beach!!! Luckily our teachers and administrators at Skyline embraced the moment and let the entire school out to play in the snow! Of course we were not dressed for the occasion but who cares! We made snowmen, had snowball fights and made make shift sleds out of cardboard boxes and trays. What a glorious time we had, with the teachers joining in and having as much fun as the kids!! It was truly a memory of a lifetime! I know that those of you who were there remember it like it was yesterday! Calendar The Board of Directors of the Solana Beach Civic and Historical Society meet on the 1st Monday of each month at 1:00 pm at 133 Pacific Ave. All members of the Society are welcome at all meetings. General Meetings Shore, Sea & Sand - Past Present and Future General Meeting 133 Pacific Avenue Fri, Jan 12, 2018 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM This is just one memory from our Solana Beach History. Shore, Sea, and Sand - Past, Present, Future Friday, January 12, 2018 - Adam Young will talk about what his current work (and that of his colleagues at Scripps) suggests to us for the future. He will present us a glimpse back of our coast and its evolution. He is an assistant project scientist in the Integrative Oceanography Division and Center for Coastal Studies at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego. He is specifically interested in coastal erosion, hazards, geomorphology, sea level rise, sediment budgets, and anthropogenic influences on the coastal system. He uses field based and remote sensing instrumentation to quantify coastal process interaction. His studies have focused intensively on California coastal cliffs, and recently expanded to include sites in Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, and North Carolina. Young s research has received state and national awards, international media attention, and was recognized by the California State Senate for excellence. Young received his BS in civil engineering from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo and MS and PhD from UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering. He worked as a postdoctoral scholar at UC San Diego and Scripps and visiting fellow at the University of Wollongong, Australia. PAGE 3
Seaweeder s Tips Holiday plants may gift you with future blooms. Traditional holiday plants can bloom in future seasons. Here s how: Paperwhite (Narcissus): After the blooms fade, leave the the leaves on the plants as they dry out because their bulbs gather nutrients and energy from them. Next fall, replant bulbs, pointy-tips up, in a container with soil or pebbles and a sprinkle of bone meal. Cluster the bulbs tightly for dramatic effect, or space them around your yard where they may naturalize and multiply. Amaryllis and Crinum: Save bulbs in a cool, dark, dry place to replant, tip level with soil or pebbles, in a container next holiday season. Or plant in a sunny spot in your garden, where these big bulbs produce dramatic, lilly-like flowers and attractive leaves for years to come. Poinsietta (Euphorbia pulcherrima): While blooming, keep soil most but don t let water stand under pots. When the leaves drop, cut stems back to two buds.
