NOARLUNGA MODEL AERO SPORTS Web Site nmas.info. and check us out on Congratulations to Paul Wilkinson on achieving his Silver Wings, It really has been a strong start to the year with 6 new solo pilots. Well done to the Instructors who have put in many hours to help these Pilots achieve their goal. The club held its Paul Wilkinson receives his Silver Wings first new Instructors refresher on Sunday 26 th Feb in the clubhouse. About 7 finished 2 nd in Sportsman and earned his 3 rd promo point in his 3 rd competition. So he has managed to emulate father Peter but has one up again as all points were earned with a different plane. So he joins dad Peter in Advanced class at the next competition. Peter flew well in Advanced with the new Etude but fell short of a promo point. It was a very windy affair on the day and really tested all 13 pilots who attended. The SA F3A now has our own Notaumatic scoring system in use which worked really well and makes scoring and judging easy and instant. The Jacobsen clan recently competed at Camperdown in the latest Pylon compo, just awaiting a results update. Notaumatic Scoring System members undertook the course with the full complement of MASA men on board to train, Gary Oakley, Paul Kumela, Neil Tank, John Modistach and Bill Kent. Peter & Sean Readett competed in the first F3A competition for the year at Monarto on 26 th February. Sean with his new Caelus 4
WILLUNGA VINTAGE MODEL AIRCRAFT CLUB This Vintage Club has increased membership over recent years and monthly meetings are held at the flying field on the last Thursday of the month, at 11am in the morning. Thus members can continue to fly before and after the meeting; all members are retired, so it s pointless to go out in the evenings. Also, almost all models are scratch built from plans and have quite a long life, as they were all designed to fly freeflight in the 1930 s, 1940 s and 1950 s. They all handle hard landings as the fuselage is not cut out where the wing is mounted and cut away behind the trailing edge as seen on lite-ply fuselages on ARF models. Also the engine does not break away with liteply mounts, rather Jack Simmons - Mam Selle 52 we have hardwood engine bearers, proved over the years for long life. It seems many ARF models are designed to break on very hard landings. Jack Simmons has recently joined the Club that flys slow Vintage models; we can sit in a chair to fly, with a beach umbrella fitted in special holes giving us protection from the sun. Jack is shown with his two Mam selle models. The model was designed by Vic Smeed and published in December 1955, Aeromodeller,as a full size plan in the magazine at 37 1/2 inch span. The model is covered in Polyspan and auto lacquer finish, EMAX 1100 kva motor, 12 amp speed controller and 2 cell 950 mah lipo pack, which is quite low cost. The larger Mam selle at 52 inch span, was a free plan in RCM&E magazine, it has a Turnigy SK3 motor, 3 cells, 1000 mah lipo and again covered with Polyspan and auto spray can finish. The 72 inch span Valkyrie was built by the late Ian White and finished with silk covering by Bill Britcher, who is shown holding the model, powered with an OS 25 FX two stroke glo engine. The model had not been flown for about 2 years but the OS engine Jack Simmons - Mam Selle 371/2 5
started almost first flick, nothing beats high quality engineering by the Japanese. Vintage gliders remain very popular and are great to fly and have a very long life, some flown for 25 years since they were built. The Super Sunbug seen going up on the line, being flown by Ivan Stacy at 11feet 4 ich span, has had many repairs over the years, but this is quite easy with balsa construction Bill Britcher - Valkyrie and the model still looks as new. The Gamma Gull flown by Bill Britcher at 100 inch span and fitted with ailerons, won our last Vintage glider event. The original was designed by Gordon Rae at 72 inch span and was a 1949 British Nats winner. The ailerons were fitted to give better turning, when coupled with the rudder. Peter Leaney came second in the last event with his double size Lulu Mk 2 glider and won the trophy of the year, as he won the previous Vintage glider event. Strathalbyn Model Aircraft Club Monthly meetings at the Great eastern Hotel have been well attended so far this year, always good to see so many fellow flyers enjoying each other s company. The new club rooms and outdoor shade area have been really helpful on those sunny summer days, and the monthly BBQ has become a regular fixture, with members volunteering to man the hot plate and organise the snags. A growing number of club members are joining the regulars at Cornerstone College Indoor Flying and getting involved in this form of the hobby. A big thank you to Phil and Beth for organizing it all... first Saturday each month 7.00 till 10.00. We would like to invite all MASA members to join us on Sunday 29th April for a Fun Fly Day (see flyer elsewhere in this newsletter). It s a Free Entry day, with lunch available on the field. There will be continuous flying all day only limited by the number of flyers in the air at the same time. Join us for a relaxed day s flying with whatever type of model you bring along. The day is in memory of Noel Wenzel, one of our founding members and long-time president. Paul Mitchell President SMAC 0401 828 026 8

Dawn Patrol South Hummocks MAC 11 November 2018 At the Eleventh hour On the Eleventh day Of the Eleventh month 1918 The Armistice was signed and World War 1 was over. At the Eleventh hour On the Eleventh day Of the Eleventh month 2018 The South Hummocks MAC in conjunction with the Scale Aircraft Society of South Australia and Model Aerosports South Australia will be commemorating the 100 th Anniversary of this historic event by inviting all MAAA members to participate in a Dawn Patrol We are in the early planning stages at the moment but if you think you might be interested in attending, dates 10-11 November 2018, please email me at sthhummocks@bigpond.com Below is a list of things that we are planning and as more is finalised, more will be posted. 12
A little more information on what we propose to be doing on the weekend 10-11 November 2018. The aircraft eligible to fly at this event are any World War I aircraft. Any size. Any type. Any power plant and Any control method. That means, Radio Control, Control Line and Freeflight. The field will be open from the morning of 08 November 2018 to set up caravans, tents and models. You might even want to get some flying done. Saturday will be a day of general flying with a small 2 round Combat competition for.25 size or equivalent size electric WWI aircraft using streamers. A BBQ lunch will be available at a small fee both Saturday and Sunday. We are hoping to have a catered dinner Saturday evening, cost to be advised, that will be run as a pseudo Military Dining-In Night. So if you are Military/Ex-Military, Para-military and you have a Mess Kit or Uniform, please wear it otherwise the dress for dinner will be smart casual. Sunday will start with a very early breakfast then the Dawn Patrol flight and all WWI aircraft are eligible. Take-off time will be either at dawn or sunrise, depending on how dark it is. There will be a minutes silence observed at 11am and the Ode will be read. The rest of the day will be general flying with possible skirmishes as to the pilots whims. We also hope to have a bugle player sounding calls at appropriate times over the weekend. We will have the use of the MASA PA system and over the course of the weekend there will be music and songs of the era played and we will have readings of soldiers letters home, personal diaries and snippets of Unit Histories over the PA. We ask that anyone attending who would like to participate in these readings do so, particularly if you have letters or diaries of family members that were involved in WWI. NMAS lunch break demonstration 13
There will be a couple of raffles run over the weekend as well. We will be setting up a small theatre and showing WWI movies and dressing the place up with WWI memorabilia. Why not dress up in period dress or uniforms yourselves. Our field has Ladies and Gents toilets, Unisex Hot shower, Kitchen facilities, BBQ, Mains water and Generator Electricity. We have plenty of shed space so you can store your assembled models overnight. If camping is not your thing, there are motels and caravan parks at Balaklava and Port Wakefield. Both towns are close to the field. If you have a trailer you can store it at the field. This event has the makings of being a fantastic weekend commemorating an historical day, not only for Australia but for the world, and if you want to stay a little longer then that won't be a problem. CAN YOU HELP the RIVERLAND RSL? would like to find out if anyone has or could make up a static replica of a Lancaster bomber. I Approximately one and a half to two metre wing-span. to be hung from the ceiling so reasonable attention to a lowered undercarriage and open bomb-bay doors would be desirable options. It is currently just a thought bubble in our minds as a commemoration to one of our still living RAAF Lancaster pilots and still regular 92 year old RSL member! Hope you guys can give us some direction... We are one of the Riverland RSL clubs here and some of our members have over the last year or two given our humble premises a significant revival in the area of memorabilia and displays. There has been discussion of hanging a few models from the ceiling but nothing has been further discussed so I would like to explore the possibilities in my own quiet way to see if this is an avenue to take before I open my big mouth! The ceiling of the clubroom is about 16 and I d be estimating about an 8-9 suspending height. Most likely in a medium banked nose down attitude. Two upper fuselage mounting points forward of C of G and one on the empennage area to give it a three-plane stability. Don t want it trying to take off when we open the doors on a breezy day! Of course, costing such a project will be essential to see how affordable or viable the project is going to be in the first place and I have yet to learn the criteria on how such a project would be costed. If you are able to help, please contact Mr Neil Tank president@masa.org.au 14
