Information Booklet Introduction/Overview Camporees allow one to participate in one of the oldest traditions in the Scouting history. They are an opportunity to practice old skills and learn new ones. Fun, friendship, and competition will be available. This guidebook provides details on events and logistics that unit leadership needs to know to ensure a fantastic experience for their scouts. Each event is hosted by a group of Volunteers (including the adult leaders of each unit). Some events listed in this guide may change due to the number of units attending and staffing issues. Additional events may be added should a higher than expected unit turnout occurs. Be Prepared for unexpected changes. Registration information is available at the District s monthly Roundtable meeting and the Council Service Center. The cost is $15 per boy and $10 for adult leader during pre-registration period up through 15 April 2016, and $25 after that date up to the event (13 May 2016). The registration fee covers the cost of the facility, patches, food for cracker barrel for SPL and leaders meeting, prizes, awards, insurance, and program materials. Troop Campsites Upon arriving on Friday at the Camporee, your Troop will be directed to their specific Troop Campsite. All of the Troop Campsites will be the same in dimension. Troops with more than 4 patrols can request a larger campsite. Troops will have the opportunity to show Troop pride in the construction and decoration of their Gateway. Gateways should be constructed on the 25 dimension on the common aisle side of your campsite. They can be no more than 6 deep into the Campsite, and no more than 15 tall. Remember, Scouts cannot climb above 6 and Gateways should be structurally sound and safe. Judging will be on Gateway Design, Troop Pride, Construction/Lashings, Kitchen gadgets, Campsite orderliness, and cleanliness over the weekend. Please remember that what you bring in, you take out. Cooking and Meals Camporee will operate as a Troop/Patrol cooking event. Please plan for a quick lunch on Saturday, so the program can continue on schedule. All Cooking at the campsites must be Off the Ground or on camp stoves or platforms. Campfires, Dutch ovens and charcoal grills are permitted but must be elevated to not scorch the ground. 2
Housekeeping Specifics The Daniel Boone Homestead is a beautiful and a National Historic facility just outside of Birdsboro. They have made this event possible for the absolute lowest cost that could be expected. Let s all make sure that this facility is in better shape when we leave than when we arrived. Trash: Please keep all garbage in plastic bags and it must be taken home with you. Do not dispose of left over remnants of gateways and campsite decorations at this facility. Dishwashing will be done in you campsites. Please make sure that your wash water is disposed of properly. Let s all do our best to keep the facility clean and neat. Before you leave on Sunday, please help walk the grounds of your specific campsite as well as a general walk through of the facility to pick up any piece of trash you may see. Medical / First Aid / Security The First Aid/Security Area will be staffed 24 hours a day for the duration of the Camporee. Minor injuries can be handled at the Troop level. More significant injuries should be reported here for basic first aid treatment and assessment. Decisions made if further treatment is needed will be made in conjunction with your Scout Leadership. Scouts should stay within the Camporee area and within the campsite area at night. Friday and Saturday night lights out and Curfew is 11:00pm. Periodic patrols will be conducted 24 hours a day to maintain a Scouting atmosphere. Scouts found outside the campsite area or causing mischief inside the campsite area will be brought to the Security Tent to meet with their Troop Adult Leadership and Authorities if necessary. The actions taken will depend on the circumstances, but may include immediate expulsion from the Camporee. Saturday s Events Saturday morning we will be running a round robin event, which will include scouting skills. Saturday afternoon we will be running a Troop Challenge. Scout Spirit will be a very valuable asset for the day s events. 3
Group Challenges Each patrol will need the following things to accomplish the afternoon tasks. There will be three tasks during this period and judges will be watching and scoring during the period. Miscellaneous 1. Six five to six foot long spars or poles (bamboo could be used) 2. Rope to lash poles to make objects. (13 pieces ten to fifteen feet long) You could use baler s twine for these lashings. 3. One rope twenty feet long 4. Three eight foot poles 5. Four stakes (two to three foot long) 6. Mallet, knife, and hand saws 7. Patrol Flags 8. Each Scout should have a hoodie along during the round robin (this will be used as a blindfold). When checking in, please provide a Complete Roster of all in attendance, including youth and adult leadership. Only one vehicle with Troop Gear will be permitted to the campsite area, all others please proceed directly to the Main Parking Area. This is a Rain or Shine event. Troop and Tent Fly and Canopies are strongly recommended for inclement weather. Rain gear is a must. Be Prepared, if we all show up prepared for bad weather, we are almost guaranteed bright sunny dry days and dry nights! 4
