OF EVERY MONTH AT GONDOLA PIZZA & STEAKHOUSE 412 E. Carroll St.TULLAHOMA EAT AT 6:00 MEETING AT 7:00 Director s Corner Here we are in the hot month of June. Remember to drink plenty of water if you are out there riding. So what has Chapter G been involved in since our last gathering? We attended the Region N Ride N in Marion, Va. The Hungry Mother State Park (SP) was beautiful. The food at the SP restaurant was really good and the comradery at the rally was fantastic. This is the 1st Region N rally since we have been back in the Manchester area (6 years). The activities at this Rally were different but real enjoyable. The next weekend we were off on the Chapter Memorial Day ride to the North Georgia mountains. We based out of East Elijay and road The Gauntlet in reverse on Sun. I think we actually road a modified version of the Gauntlet because of the gravel roads on our route. The Gauntlet is a combination of loop routes in the mountains around Helen and Hiwassee. We stopped at Brasstown Bald, highest mountain in GA, and learned some interesting facts about the mountain. It was easy to see 4 states from the tower. The next 2 weekends we were off to visit other Chapters in the area (TN-L, TN-N, and TN-Z). We took the car to TN-L and TN-N because it was supposed to rain. When we were sitting at the TN-L gathering it came a downpour twice but it didn t rain going or coming. TN-L played a Weekly Dinner Rides, we leave a 6pm sharp, from Tractor Supply Parking Lot (By Captain D s) If in Tullahoma, meet at the Restaurant June 23-West Main Brick Oven, Manchester June 30-Western Sirloin, Decherd July 7, London s, Tullahoma July 14, Granny Fishes, Tullahoma July 21, Meeting (Continued on page 2)

(Continued from page 1) version of Name that tune. I knew all the tunes but unfortunately they wanted their names and I didn t know any of them. Getting to TN-N was a different story. It came a downpour again in 2 different areas causing a couple accidents. Let me remind you to slow down when it is raining to minimize your chances of hydroplaning. This is especially true if you are on a trike or have worn tires. TN-N played a version of the Newlywed game. We all had many laughs at some of the answers. One question for the men was: what color pajamas did your wife wear to bed last night. Our ride to TN-Z was a hot one. Did I say remember to drink plenty of water if you are out there riding? Temps in the mid 90 s and heat index near 100. We had fun visiting Charlie and his team. We also had a few attending the Advanced Riders Course (ARC) in Clarksville. What a month. Finally, Spring Fling will be at same location next year. The dinner show after closing will be at Hatfield and McCoy Dinner Theater. Buffett and show for only $35. They can only hold 700 people and we had 575 last year at Dixie Stampede. Make your reservations early. Check out our newsletter for our Thursday Ride and Dines for May and Jun. Also check out the newsletter for more events happening around the State with our sister Chapters. (http://webpages.charter.net/gwrratng/ Newsletters.htm). Ride Safe and Ride Often Dennis & Anne Greer Chapter Directors We will continue our Chapter visits to TN-S and TN-H the next 2 weekends. Also, don t forget to plan on the TNG annual Jul 4th ride (Jul 2-4). I have several rooms reserved (6 total) at the Comfort Inn in Sylva, NC. They are available on a 1st come basis. Four have already been reserved so call them soon (828) 477-4950. Let me know when you reserve so I can cancel any unclaimed rooms. Next month Anne and I will be attending the SC Rally in Anderson on 14-16 Jul. Come join us. Region N will be going to Johnson City, TN on 4-5 Nov for the Appalachian Fall Finale and Region N Couple of the Year selection. At the TN Rally, they provided us some maps. One was called Southern Dozen (www.southern Dozen.com). It has 12 rides originating from the Johnson City Holiday Inn which is the host hotel for the Region N Rally. Hello Fellow club members. We need to try getting more members in the chapter. When you see someone on a Goldwing or any other brand that would like to ride with us and join the chapter. If it is motorcycle that is not a Goldwing they can join as associate member with the GWRRA. Larry and Cathie Alexander

Rider Ed article Jun 16 R-Turns and Gravel Roads The title for this article came to me while we were on our Chapter Memorial Day ride. Let me explain. When Anne and I were in Alabama our favorite ride leaders name started with an R. Have you figured out where I m going with this yet? Mr R would often miss a designated turn while leading our Chapter rides. That usually means everyone has to make a U-turn to get back on route. This happened so often we started calling them Rturns instead of U-turns. Once we made our 1st U-turn on a ride we would declare the ride official. What do you do if you miss a designated turn or the road ends (turns into gravel)? Obviously there are choices and decisions that need to be made. When I took the Road Captain s Course the 1 st time we were told we should make the designated turn and let the others catch up. The safe way to do this is for the lead bike to make the call and 1st bike that can safely make the turn does so with all others following. If possible find a safe place for all remaining bikes to pull over and wait for the lead and any other bikes who missed the turn. Another practice is for everyone to continue to follow the lead. The problem with this approach is everyone has to make the U-turn safely which can be a challenge. What if you did not miss your turn and the road turns into gravel. Again, you have options and decisions. You always have the U-turn option. In this case you also have the continue option. All bikes should agree to continue on the gravel. Otherwise turn around and find the paved route. Gravel can be a challenge for the 2-wheeler. The gravel tends to roll under your tires. Always slow down on gravel. The more gravel roads you travel the more comfortable you will become. However, don t be afraid to say you don t want to ride the gravel road. It s better to arrive late than to be picking yourself up off the ground. If you have to make a U-turn or ride on a gravel road, do it safely. Dennis Greer RE/ME/LT University Trainer
