Following the Footsteps of Nelson Mandela plus An African Safari at the Krueger National Park accompanied by Jamalynn and David Williamson March 2-12, 2017 Wednesday, March 1 Depart on our flight to Johannesburg. Thursday, March 2 Arrive today in Johannesburg where we will be met by a local guide and start our journey in the Footsteps of Madiba. This is a journey to personally experience Madiba s story. Our 1st stop will be to Liliesleaf Farm. It was at Liliesleaf Farm where some prominent leaders of South Africa s struggle against apartheid sought shelter and attended meetings. Some of these individuals were arrested in a police raid on Liliesleaf Farm on 11 July 1963. Nelson Mandela, who was already serving a five-year prison sentence, joined 10 others on trial for sabotage in what became known as the Rivonia Trail. Mandela and seven others were sentenced to life imprisonment on 12 June 1964. From here we travel to our hotel for our overnight stay. En route we will visit Nelson Mandela Square, a popular shopping and entertainment Centre in Sandton where a 6m-high statue of Nelson Mandela is located. Tonight we will have a group welcome dinner. Overnight in The Maslow Hotel www.suninternational.com/maslow Friday, March 3 Enjoy breakfast at the hotel and then we travel this morning to Soweto and cross the iconic Nelson Mandela Bridge that links Braamfontein to Newtown and downtown Johannesburg. We visit the Apartheid Museum which opened in 2001 and is acknowledged as the pre-eminent museum in the world dealing with 20th century South Africa, at the heart of which is the apartheid story. The Apartheid Museum illustrates the rise and fall of Apartheid. There is a permanent exhibition titled Mandela: Leader, Comrade, Negotiated, Prisoner, and Statesman. We will enjoy an included typical shebeen late lunch in Soweto. Afterwards we visit the most famous street in Soweto, Vilakazi Street, and for good reason. It is the only street in the world to have had two Nobel Prize winners as residents. Both Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu lived here, and today you can visit Mandela House, which is where Mrs. Mandela and children lived until she was banished to Brandfort in 1977 and returned years later. It remained a family house until it became a museum; the house is filled with memorabilia about the family, complete with photographs and visuals. The museum is a moving tribute to the incredible struggle for freedom. We return back to our hotel in the late afternoon. Dinner on your own. Overnight in The Maslow Hotel www.suninternational.com/maslow

Saturday, March 4 Enjoy breakfast at the hotel Today we visit Constitution Hill Precinct in Braamfontein, Johannesburg, has a complex history going back to 1892, when the Old Fort was built. Through the years, it functioned mainly as a prison, and in the dark days of apartheid, it was here that many passive resisters and freedom fighters, including Mahatma Ghandi in 1913 and later Nelson Mandela, were held. Many of those involved in the Defiance Campaign of 1952 and The Treason Trail of 1956 were also kept here. It has two permanent exhibitions that focus on the lives of Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi. From here we travel to The Nelson Mandela Foundation s Centre of Memory houses permanent and temporary exhibitions including a walk in experience of his post-presidential personal office. Return back to your hotel in the late afternoon. Dinner is on your own. The Maslow Hotel (Standard room) or similar www.suninternational.com/maslow Sunday, March 5 After breakfast, we depart our hotel this morning and transfer to Tambo International Airport where we will say goodbye to our guide before we check in for our flight to Cape Town. Upon arrival in Cape Town, we will meet with our new guide before we will enjoy a tour of the Mother City. Our drive takes us pass the City Hall and Grand Parade built in 1905; Cape Town s City Hall is one of the last Victorianstyle sandstone structures in the city. It is built in the Italian Renaissance style and is a major attraction. Cape Town s Grand Parade is directly in front of City Hall. On 11 February 1990, it was from the balcony of City Hall that Nelson Mandela addressed a crowd of 250 000 people, who came to hear him speak after his release from prison. From here our journey takes us pass The Mandela Rhodes Building, situated at 150 St Georges Mall and is home to The Mandela Rhodes Foundation, to Parliament. Nelson Mandela routinely appeared in Parliament as South African President from 1994-1999. Check in at hotel and rest of day at leisure. Southern Sun The Cullinan https://www.tsogosun.com/the-cullinan Monday, March 6 This morning we depart to Robben Island, a World Heritage Site and museum where Nelson Mandela spent 18 years in jail. From the 17th to the 20th centuries, the island was a place of imprisonment today it is a beacon of hope and a place where visitors can gain some real insight into the life and times of Nelson Mandela and fellow struggle heroes, such as Ahmad Kathrada, Robert Sobukwe, Clarence Makwethu, Govan Mbeki and Walter Sisulu.

Return to Capetown and take a walk around the V&A Waterfront for a visit to Nobel Square to see the sculptures of the four South African Nobel Peace Prize laureates standing in a row: Nelson Mandela, FW De Klerk, Desmond Tutu and Albert Luthuli. These four great men all played their part in helping South Africa to democracy. Enjoy lunch at one of the many restaurants on the V&A Waterfront before enjoying a return cable car trip up Table Mountain (weather permitting) for a bird s eye view of Cape Town, one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Thereafter travel to Camps Bay via the Atlantic coastline back to your hotel. Tuesday, March 7 After breakfast at our hotel, we depart this morning to the Cape Winelands area. Enjoy a scenic drive this morning to the Franschhoek Valley. Stop to visit the Huguenot Memorial and Museum before stopping at one of the fine wine estates in the region for a wine tasting. From here we travel to Drakenstein Correctional Centre which was formerly known as Victor Verster Prison and is an unofficial attraction linked to the life and times of Nelson Mandela. Situated between Paarl and Franschhoek, it was here, on a house on the property, that Nelson Mandela spend the last 14 months of the 27 years he spent in prison. There is a bronze statue by sculptor Jean Doyle of Mandela just outside the prison gates depicting him on the day of his release on 11 February 1990. We travel to Paarl where we will enjoy lunch and a wine-tasting at one of the many wine farms in this area. Arrive back in Cape Town in the late afternoon and have the rest of the afternoon at leisure. Wednesday, March 8 No visit to South Africa is complete without an opportunity for a Safari. After breakfast, we will check out of our hotel and transfer to Cape Town International Airport, where we say goodbye to our guide before we check in for our flight to Hoedspruit Airport On arrival we will be met and transferred to our game lodge where we will spend the next 3 nights enjoying the many activities the lodge has to offer, great food, great company and great safaris. Within the expansive Kapama Private Game Reserve, River Lodge epitomises five-star safari accommodation. The majestic northern Drakensberg mountains form the backdrop to the 64-suite River Lodge, which is positioned along a bend of the seasonal Kapama River. It s the largest luxury game lodge in the Greater Kruger National Park area, and is stylishly furnished to ensure an unforgettable African safari experience. River Lodge s 40 spacious air-conditioned suites have uninterrupted views over the Big Five game reserve from private patios, and all feature full, en-suite bathrooms with lavish amenities replenished daily. The suites are decorated to reflect old Africa in a luxury game lodge setting. Beverage stations for early morning coffee in suite and minibars for sundowners on your private patio are standard in all rooms.

Kapama River Lodge (Standard Suite) or similar http://www.kapama.com/kapama-river-lodge/ Thursday and Friday, March 9 and 10 Across all of Kapama s lodges, two daily game drives are offered and are included. Accompanied by a skilled ranger and tracker, guests can expect to encounter a diverse range of animal and bird species on game drives. Since this is a Big Five reserve, seeing lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo is possible over a two-day safari in Kapama Private Game Reserve. The day starts with an early wake-up call between 5am and 5:30am. Tea, coffee and rusks are enjoyed together before heading out at first light. While seeing big game is always exhilarating, there are many other smaller species that are also captivating, and birding enthusiasts will be delighted at the approximately 350 species of birds recorded on the reserve. Halfway through the game drive, there s a stop for hot drinks and snacks, before returning to the lodge at around 9am for a full breakfast. Throughout the day, it s likely we will see wildlife around the lodge - nyala antelope and vervet monkeys are frequent visitors, though seeing some of the Big Five is also not uncommon. At around 3:30pm, everyone gathers for a decadent high tea, before heading out with our ranger and tracker for the afternoon game drive through the reserve. En route, we will stop for a sundowner drink and will have a chance to stretch our legs as we watch the sun set over the distant peaks of the Drakensberg mountains. As darkness falls, the nocturnal animals of the bush come out. The skilled tracker will scan the landscape using a spotlight, which illuminates animals eyes. A variety of completely different species can be seen on the night drive back to the lodge. Arrival is at the lodge is usually around 7pm, allowing time to freshen up before enjoying a sumptuous dinner. Saturday, March 11.
