P.O. Box 284 Shokan, N.Y. 12481 Dear Parent/Guardian, I would like to welcome you and your child{ren} to the Town of Olive Day Camp. Within this booklet you will find information about the Olive Day Camp as well as registration forms. If you choose to send your child to Olive Day Camp, please read this booklet, complete page 5 and mail it to the address noted above with the fee by June 25 th. If you have any questions you may call my voice mail at {845} 657-6920. Sincerely, Gene Sorbellini Olive Recreation Director History: The Olive Day Camp began in 1955 and was held in various places throughout the township. In the early 1960 s the program was centralized at the Davis Park facility and soon after, the first pool was built for the Olive community. That pool remained in service until 2002 when a rehabilitation project was done to the entire Davis Park facility. In July of 2003 the Pete Tosi Memorial Pool opened providing a safe, clean and modern facility for the residents of the Town of Olive for many years to come. Mission Statement: The mission of the Olive Day Camp is to offer a safe and healthy environment for the children of the community to help promote good sportsmanship, to self-discipline, to improve selfesteem, to discover new activities, to develop friendships and of course have fun! General Information: The Day Camp is open to children that have completed kindergarten up to and including the age of16 whose parents or guardian reside, own property or own a business in the Town of Olive. The camp has a maximum limit of 250 children and those children are monitored and supervised by a staff of 30 counselors. Busing is provided for children living outside the immediate West Shokan area {bus route list attached}. Those children living in the no busing area may either walk to and from the camp or can be transported by private vehicle. The Day Camp offers various activities throughout the day including but not limited to Arts & Crafts, board games, field games, organized sport activities, swimming and field trips. Camp Fee Schedule: $30.00 for {1} child; for the entire six-week program is required with the registration form. $50.00 for {2} children in the same household; for the entire six-week program is required with the registration form. $70.00 for {3} or more children in the same household; for the entire six-week program is required with the registration form. Location and hours: The Day Camp is held for six-weeks during the months of July and August at the Davis Park facility on Watson Hollow Rd in West Shokan, N.Y. Camp begins at 10:00am and ends at 3:00pm Monday through Thursday for the six week period. For 2012, the Olive Day Camp will start Monday July 2nd and will conclude on Thursday August 9 th. The Day Camp staff is on-site from 9:45am until 3:00pm. Children should not be dropped off prior to 9:45am since the park is not supervised prior to that time. Children must be picked up promptly at 3:00pm. {see rules}

Facility: The Day Camp is held at the Davis Park complex where a large open pavilion is available as well as ample open field space, basketball court and playground area. Also at the facility, is a modern swimming facility offering a non-swimmer area and 4, 5 and 6ft. swimming areas. The pool complex also has a modern clean bathroom and shower area. The entire complex is inspected by the Ulster County Board of Health annually and is maintained by the Town of Olive. The Davis Park campus and pool facility is closed to the public during day camp hours. This is to insure the safety of the campers. Staffing information: The day camp staff is a combination of adults, college students and high school students. The adult s on the staff are teachers, teacher s assistants or individuals qualified to work with children. A minimum of two people on site are trained and certified for basic first aid and CPR. Busing: The Olive Day Camp has contracted the services of a transportation company based out of the local area. The transportation company has been providing safe transportation for years to the Onteora School district. Contact the Recreation Director if you require further information about busing. Lunch: Every child should bring a sack lunch that does not require refrigeration. Your child should also bring with them plenty to drink for the day. If you choose to send a small cooler have the camper s name clearly marked on it. No longer will there be a vending machine for drinks so insure your child has plenty to drink for the day. On occasion an ice cream truck will come to the camp around 1:00pm. Your child may purchase items from this vendor ranging in price from $1.50 to $3.50. If in fact the camper does have money, he/she should keep it properly secured at all times. The camp can not be held responsible for lost or stolen money. Clothing: Please send your child with weather appropriate clothing and shoes that provide protection from tree roots, blacktop, grass and gravel. Children should also bring swimming clothes and a towel as well. All clothing and towels should have the campers name written on it. A lost and found container will be located at the facility if in fact items are lost. Off-site trips: The Olive Day Camp may take the campers on field trips to various local venues such as a Roller Skating Rink, Movie Theater, Bowling Alley and Water Park. These trips are offered to all of the campers at a discounted fee for the particular trip. Permission slips and fees are required for your child to attend the trip prior to the date of the trip. If your child does not go on the trip, he/she should not get on the Day Camp bus that day since there will not be Day Camp at the Park for that day. Page 2

Swimming: The Olive Day Camp offers a modern swimming facility that is staffed by a Water Safety Instructor {WSI} and American Red Cross certified life guards. During the six-week day camp swimming instruction is offered to children wanting to improve upon their swimming skills. During the afternoon hours {12:00pm -2:45pm} the pool is available for free swim for all children of the day camp. It is encouraged that all children go into the pool to keep cool during the very warm days at day camp. During the six-week day camp {Mon. Thurs. 10-3} the pool facility is closed to the public. Discipline Policy: Listed below are the basic rules and the discilipine policy for the Olive Day Camp. Please insure you and your child read this document together. On the registration form you and your child{ren} are required to sign that you have read and understand the rules and policies of the Olive Day Camp. The Olive Day Camp has established the Three Strikes and You re Out policy. Strikes are given for the rules noted below as well as severe misbehavior at the camp, on the bus or persistent behaviors that are deemed inappropriate, dangerous, or contrary to the best interest of campers and counselors. When a strike is issued, the parent/guardian will be notified of the behavior that resulted in the strike being given and the child will not be able to return the next day. After three strikes, the child will not be able to return to the program. Day Camp Rules: 1. All children must be properly registered to attend day camp. 2. Attendance is taken three times a day {10:15,11:30 & 2:50} all campers must report to their groups at those times. 3. All visitors {including parents} must report to the office when entering the campus. 4. Parents/guardians must sign their child(ren) out if taking child prior to 3:00pm. 5. Campers are not permitted to leave the campus during day camp unless with his/her parent/guardian. 6. Only those having written authorization by a parent/guardian (ID required) may sign out a camper. 7. Electronic devices should not be brought to camp. This includes but not limited to MP3 players, IPODS, portable games, cameras, and cell phones. These items are unable to be secured and the camp can not be held responsible for lost or stolen items. 8. Camp Staff will not and can not dispense medication to children. 9. All children must be picked up by 3:00 pm daily. Two late pickups will result in the child(ren) suspended from camp for 1 week. Three late pickups will result in removal of child from camp for the remainder of season. 10. Parents will be contacted if the child(ren) becomes unruly during camp. 11. Profanity, fighting or theft will not be tolerated at the day camp. Immediate expulsion may result if a child is involved in these types of actions. 12. Food or money will not be supplied by camp staff 13. Disciplinary action for violation of camp rules lie with the Recreation Director and or the Camp Director. Page 3

Cancellation or early Dismissal: Because the Olive Day Camp is held primarily outdoors and the only shelter available is an open pavilion, weather conditions either cause camp to be cancelled for the day or dismissed early. Please insure you read the policy noted below for these types of events so you can plan accordingly for that day. In the event that Day Camp may be cancelled due to inclement weather, a recorded message will be put on the Olive Rec. Phone {657-6920} at 8:30am. The cancellation will also be posted on Cancellations.com and be announced on radio stations 101.5 WPDH and 100.1 WDST.Weather conditions during the summer months can and will change very quickly and the possibility exists that the day camp staff may have to dismiss the children early from camp. You should know that if camp is in session and the weather begins to change, every attempt will be made to keep the children at the camp for the entire time frame. In the event that the weather does not clear up in a reasonable period of time, the following procedure will take place to keep the children safe and returned home. The on-site staff will sound the emergency horn and all of the campers will be gathered under the pavilion. Each group leader will take attendance for his/her group to insure that each camper is accounted for. The Camp Director and Asst. Camp Director will instruct the on-site staff of the weather conditions and determine if the camp will stay in session or have an early dismissal. If a decision is made to dismiss early, the following procedures will be followed. a. The transportation company will be called and notified of the dismissal. b. The transportation company will give a time that the buses can be at the park for an early dismissal. c. Once that time has been determined the {2} radio stations will be called {100.1 & 101.5} to make the announcement as soon as possible. d. A pre- recorded message will be placed on the Rec. Phone 657-6920 stating the time of the early dismissal. e. The Town of Olive Town Clerks office {657-2320} and Town Supervisors office {657-8118} will also be notified of the early dismissal. Also you may go on line to Cancellations.com for information f. The Day Camp phone {657-6373} will be used to make phone calls to parents of the children who walk or are driven to camp by private vehicle. g. Those children will remain at the camp with at least {2} staff members until the parent/guardian arrives to pick them up. Once the buses arrive at the park, the children will be boarded on to the buses and the drivers will be instructed of any changes on their routes for dropping off children at different stops due to the early dismissal. We understand that getting the information is sometimes difficult and that is why we are offering additional phone numbers to call if the weather is questionable and may cause an early dismissal of the camp.
