Page SEPTEMBER 2 2011 THE INSIDE EDGE THE INSIDE Page EDGE 2 Prez Sez... Wow September! The smell of freshly cleaned and painted school classrooms await some of your kids or grandkids. Football and soccer games will soon consume your Friday nights. Garden weeds become less important with the first frost roughly just a month away. Long put off Summer house projects approach crunch time or will thankfully get put off again until next year. Leaves and gas prices will be falling soon. Time to get the skis tuned and, go ahead, buy that ski jacket you ve been promising yourself. By this time the Lake Hope (ladies only) Hiking Weekend is a pleasant memory. I understand everyone had a great time. Rumors are that this may have been the First Annual Hiking Weekend. Thank you Paulette Weber and Daryl Shrider for making it all happen. Applause, please! September is also time to re-enlist in your favorite (bestest and funnest) ski and social club. Yes, I am referring to the annual September Newark Ski Club membership meeting. This year we ll be gathering on the porch of the Buckeye Lake Yacht Club. Pizza Cottage pizza will be served. The bar will be open as a cash bar. Show your colors. Wear a NSC shirt and get your name in the hat. Two lucky winners will get a special edition drink ticket. Dead Men Tell No Tales! Halloween Party! Saturday, Oct. 22 6 pm in costume The haunted home of Debbie Kenny McBride & Matt McBride, 735 Turner Rd, Newark, OH 43055 will again host our 2nd Annual Dead Men Tell No Tales Halloween Party. Costumes are strongly encouraged. You would want to win a cold, hard prize, wouldn t you? Dress for the weather, as most of the fun will be out in the graveyard. BYOB and your last meal, which you WILL be FORCED to share!!! Turner Road connects King Road and Price Road, and there will be plenty of parking across the street at the Health Department. The red brick house with the fence and gate is the only one on the Hill, just like the one in Psycho. Sharpen up your vampire bat hunting skills as you will need them to drain the life out of your competition BE- FORE THEY GET TO YOU!!!!! Bruce Kern, NSC Prez Call to arms - we need your help!! Your club needs you!! All these fun activities we offer have one BIG thing in common, someone great stepped forward and said I want to lead that trip! We can t do anything without that wonderful person, and now it s your turn. Is there somewhere you ve always wanted to go or something you ve always wanted to do? Well, join us on Monday, October 17th at 6:30 p.m. for the semi-annual Planning Committee meeting at Tom & le Huffman s house. This is a great opportunity to help steer the NSC in the direction YOU would like us to go. Bring us your wildest ideas and we ll help you lead a trip there. Because without all those people who stepped forward and became Trip Leaders, we would have all just sat at home and never been where we ve been or seen what we ve seen (even the stuff we want to forget!!) For all those who ve lead a trip or an activity, THANK YOU!!!!! For the rest of us, what are you waiting for? There is a lot to be said for being able to decide where to go, when to go, what to do, and how to do it. And you can t do it with a better group of people - unlike most trips with the family, ours are FUN!!!!
Page SEPTEMBER 3 2011 THE INSIDE EDGE THE INSIDE Page EDGE 3 ZIP LINE TRIP in the HOCKING HILLS Hocking Hills Canopy Tours Sunday October 9 th Afternoon (trees should be beautiful, weather should be dry) October 9 th is around the corner but you can still have a chance to decide to join us for the Zipline trip in the Hocking Hills. Here are the details: You will start along a 1.5 mile scenic nature trail to the beginning of the course where you will complete 10 ziplines, traverse 5 adventure skybridges and rappel back to ground level at the finish line. Groups of 8 will leave together every 20 minutes during the early afternoon. We ll gather afterwards for food and drinks nearby. The cost is $85 per person. You may add a ride on the Super Zip Line for an additional $20. That s the new ¼ mile high speed line. You can reach the "launch pad" by traversing a series of three elevated walkways and two scenic tree platforms, all leading to a 75 foot tower. Launching two at a time from the tower, you'll plunge into the forest, fly through the tree canopy until the bottom drops out at the edge of a rock cliff then swoop down the middle of the Hocking River. Since this is a one day trip, participants don t have to be ski club members to go. They do have to be 10 years old and at least 70 lbs. The maximum weight limit is 250 lbs. Call or e-mail if you have questions: Kathy Kern 740-587-3109 kathykern@roadrunner.com Vice Sez, Hello everyone! How about the nice cool evenings!!!guess what is right around the corner? Snow!!!!!!!!!! The winner of the emoticon contest was Jim Proctor, kudos to all of you who are reading the Newsletter & look for this month s hidden emoticon for a chance to win September s prize. I will include my rap up on the golf Scramble - it was hot, but nothing fazes the NSC. Everyone had a good time with some awesome prizes. The party after we left the golf course included dinner, drinks, and prizes. I think we will put the Scramble on the Calendar every year. See everyone at the membership meeting and read that newsletter and see if you can win a prize. They showcase a gorgeous Italian menu with wines that you can really get behind. Come out and enjoy what Ohio s bounty has gifted to us. I know that this is a bit of a haul for our West Side members, but you can t really beat Friday night at a winery. Hey, maybe get a room nearby and make a weekend of it by visiting the other nearby wineries & seeing the sights of this picturesque part of Ohio. We all need a weekend away, right? I haven t nailed down our October 21st Happy Hour location yet, but stay posted. I am trying to find something fun in the Newark/Heath/Hebron area. On November 18th, we are going to explore a great Turkish joint at East Towne Center called Café Istanbul. Stop on you way home from work to start the countdown to that most American of all Holidays:-)~ my Birthday!!!! Oh yeah, & Thanksgiving!
