Tuesday 30 October, 7.15pm - Great Hall, Hellenic Centre The Secret War in the Aegean Islands During World War 2, 1943-1945 An illustrated talk by Lieutenant Colonel Michael Westropp, to mark the 72nd Anniversary of the Italian invasion of Greece on 28 October 1940. Little was known about the secret war until Michael Westropp recently uncovered the papers of Brigadier D J T Turnbull CBE, DSO British Commander of the Aegean Raiding Force. The force included the Greek Sacred Squadron commanded by Major Kristodoulos Tsigantes. The talk will follow the activities of the raiders on the islands under Axis control and will conclude with the setting up of Force 132 in the closing months of the War to take humanitarian aid to the islands, notably Chios. Thursday 8 November, 7pm - Great Hall, Hellenic Centre The Sixth Andreas A David Biennial Memorial Lecture Under the auspices of His All-Holiness the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew. Speaker: The Very Reverend Dr John Chryssavgis, Archdeacon of the Ecumenical Patriarchate and clergyman of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. Title: Environment and Spirituality, Transforming Perspectives and Practices. The lecture will be about issues on environment and its theological aspects and the initiatives of His All-Holiness the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew. The Very Reverend Dr John Chryssavgis was Professor of Theology at Holy Cross Seminary in Boston and Director of Religious Studies at Hellenic College, USA (1995-2002), where he established the Environment Office. Currently he serves the Office of Inter- Orthodox and ecumenical relations of the Archdiocese of America and as a theological advisor to the Ecumenical Patriarch on environmental issues. He is the author of over twenty books and numerous articles in several languages on the Church Fathers and Orthodox Spirituality. Entry by invitation. Renée Reznek is an artist of scrupulous sensitivity and intelligence (Daily Telegraph). A recital to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Claude Debussy, including his pieces which were inspired by the music of Spain as well as works by his Spanish colleagues, Isaac Albeniz and Manuel de Falla. The recital will contain the World Premiere of In the Still of the Night (2012) by the renowned Spanish composer Jorge Grundman.
