A Bay Gourmet Get Away The Roses of Pasadena: Art, Food, and Entrepreneurial Women September 17-19, 2010 CST #2096889 40 Alexander Rose The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens

Dear Club Member, Sitting at the foot of the San Gabriel Mountains, Pasadena has played a key role in California s history. In 1886, it became the second incorporated city in Southern California after Los Angeles. Today, it is an upscale community with a thriving arts, cultural, and entertainment scene. It is best known for the Tournament of Roses Parade and Bowl Game that take place every New Year's Day. I invite you to join Bay Gourmet Chair, Cathy Curtis for a weekend get away to the City of Roses. This program explores the culinary and cultural highlights of Pasadena, with a focus on entrepreneurial women in the food industry. These Bay Gourmet events are popular, and fill up quickly. Our group is limited to 18, so call soon to reserve your space! Best regards, HIGHLIGHTS Meet Pasadena s culinary industry insiders, including a top caterer, restaurateurs, and gourmet market owners. Experience private tours at the Norton Simon Museum of Art, and the Huntington Library, Art Collection and Botanical Gardens. Enjoy an exquisite catered dinner in a private home and enjoy a lovely afternoon tea lunch while admiring the rose gardens at the Huntington Museum. Explore the Pasadena Farmers Market and learn about the city s history during a culinary and tasting tour of Old Pasadena. Kristina Nemeth Director of Club Travel (415) 597 6720 COMMONWEALTH CLUB TRIP LEADER Cathy Curtis has been a member of the Commonwealth Club for 15 years and has been an active volunteer since 2000, most recently as the Chair of the Bay Gourmet Member Led Forum. Prior to her current career as a Certified Financial Planner and owner of Curtis Financial Planning, Cathy spent 20 years in sales and marketing in the food industry. She is a passionate advocate for healthy eating, sustainable food systems and supporting local farms and food businesses. Cathy is on the advisory board for Meals For Change, a social enterprise kitchen that uses 100% of revenue to support non profit nutritional and job training programs and for BALT, the Brentwood Agricultural Land Trust. She is a native San Franciscan, and lives in the Oakland Hills with her husband Rob.

Friday, September 17 Arrive independently on a morning flight to Burbank. (Additional hotel nights are available if you would like to come in on Thursday evening, and shuttle service can be arranged from Los Angeles International airport. Daily parking at the hotel is available should you choose to drive.) Our tour starts late Friday morning. Meet with Julie Campoy the owner of Julienne, a French-inspired bistro that has been a neighborhood mainstay for more than two decades. Enjoy lunch with fellow Club members and peruse Julie s gourmet market. This afternoon we take a private tour of the Norton Simon Museum of Art. Located along the Tournament of Roses route and renovated in 1995 under architect Frank Gehry, the Norton Simon houses an internationally respected collection of European and Asian art, as well as an extensive collection of Modern and Contemporary Art, with seminal works by Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Henri Matisse, and Diego Rivera. Transfer to the centrally located Marriott Hotel in Old Pasadena for check-in. Enjoy some free time to explore the shops along Colorado Boulevard before our dinner at Gale s, a local favorite, offering northern Italian cuisine. Hear from our host for the evening, restaurant owner Gale Kohl. A 20-year veteran of the industry, Gale previously ran the food service accounts for a host of entertainment giants including Walt Disney Imagineering, ABC and CBS television, and the Gene Autry Museum. OLD PASADENA COURTYARD MARRIOTT (L,D) Saturday, September 18 Depart for a morning visit of the Pasadena Farmers Market with local insiders, including Peggy Dark. For over two decades, Peggy Dark s Kitchen for Exploring Foods has provided exceptional catering to southern California. The Kitchen has received the Zagat Award of Distinction, and has been featured in the New York Times and on NBC's Today Show. Discover the Huntington Library, Art Collection and Botanical Gardens where we enjoy a private estate tour.

The library contains an extensive collection of rare books and manuscripts, including a Gutenberg Bible. The art collection consists of the works of 18th and 19th century British and French artists and 18th, 19 th, and early 20th century American artists, as well as changing exhibitions. The best known works of British art are The Blue Boy by Thomas Gainsborough and Sarah Barrett Moulton and "Pinkie" by Thomas Lawrence. The impressive botanical gardens extend over 120 acres! Enjoy an afternoon tea lunch at the museum s Tea Room, which overlooks three acres of roses. We continue to the Gamble House, an outstanding example of American Arts and Crafts style architecture. The house and furnishings were designed by Charles and Henry Greene in 1908 for David and Mary Gamble of the Procter and Gamble Company, and is a National Historic Landmark. This evening engage in a panel discussion with women entrepreneurs in the culinary industry, followed by an exquisite catered dinner in the private home of Peggy Dark. OLD PASADENA COURTYARD MARRIOTT (B,L,D) Sunday, September 19 Take an optional morning walk to experience the views from the Colorado Bridge and to see the infamous Rose Bowl. Continue with a culinary tasting tour that covers both the food and history of Old Pasadena. We'll explore the streets of Green, Union, Holly, and DeLacey, the avenues of Fair Oaks and Raymond, as well as Colorado Boulevard. Colorful alleys and secret thru-ways spice up our path as we seek out spectacular ethnic eateries and sweets havens for tastings! The owners of Melting Pot Tours, Lisa & Diane Scalia, are L.A. natives and lifelong residents. Lisa, is a caterer and private tour guide, and Diane, a professional chef, author and food writer. Together they have over 25 years of combined experience in the food industry and the culinary arts. Take some free time to enjoy Pasadena s Playhouse district, with galleries, shops and bookstores before heading to the airport for flights home.
