Ethiopia Simiens Standard Trek and Historic Route Simiens and Ras Deshen, Gondar, Lalibela, and Addis Ababa Overview The Simien Mountains Massif in the northwest corner of Ethiopia is one of the major highlands of Africa, rising to the highest point in Ethiopia, Ras Dejen (4,543m), which is the fifth highest peak in the African continent. The West Plateau is bounded on the north and east by a massive escarpment, many kilometres long and over 1,000m high in places, and cut along its length by steep gorges. The Simien Mountains National Park is primarily a wildlife sanctuary for endangered species such as the Gelada Baboon, which we expect to see in huge numbers, and the Walia Ibex, which is more difficult to find. The summit of Ras Deshen is challenging and rewarding, and is followed by a tough ridge route, topping several 4000m peaks en route. Please note that this itinerary is moderately tough, and you may encounter poor weather. Before the trek you will fly to Gondar, which was once the capital of Ethiopia and you will have the chance to explore the castles of Gondar, powerful symbols of seventeenth century wealth in a country that is unfortunately now so poor. After the trek you will have the chance to visit the ancient historic towns of Axum and Lalibela perhaps the most interesting historic sites on the continent of Africa. Day 0 Depart London Heathrow on night flight to Addis Ababa Depart UK on night flight to Addis. Day 01 Arrival, 1 night Addis hotel HB Arrive Addis early morning. Transfer to city Jupiter Hotel for dinner, bed & breakfast. Please contact us about the option to upgrade to Sheraton. Option for walk or city visit. The name of the city Addis Ababa, in Amharic, means new flower. Founded in 1886 by Menelik II, it is located at 2,500 metres above sea level in one of the highest parts of the Entoto mountain chain (3,000 m above sea level). It enjoys an excellent climate all year round, with an average temperature of 25Â C. Addis Ababa is a pleasant city with wide avenues of jacaranda trees, interesting museums and one of the largest open air markets in Africa, known as the Mercato.

Day 02 Fly to Gondar, Visit Castles Goha Hotel HB This morning you are transferred to Addis Ababa Airport in time for your flight to Gondar (0710-0825hrs). Your local guide and support vehicle will meet you at the airport and take you to check in at the Goha Hotel, followed by a tour of the Castles. Gondar was the first capital city of the Ethiopian empire, which began in 1632 with the reign of Fasilidas. In Gondar, there are a dozen castles built by various emperors over the course of 236 years. The city seems more European than African and also has Islamic influences. Today you will visit the palaces, residences, and baths of Fasilidas; and afterwards (time allowing) you can visit the church of Debre Berham Selassie (Light of the Trinity), which is located at the summit of a hill and surrounded by fortified walls. The interior is decorated with beautiful frescos. Dinner and overnight at your hotel the Goha. Day 03 Drive to Debark, Trek to Sankaber 3230ms, Tent FBA After breakfast you will drive (approx 3 to 4hrs.) through some interesting and sometimes spectacular countryside to the gateway and market town of Debark (2700ms.). NB this road is often under repair so please be prepared for delays. At Debark, approximate altitude 2700m, the HQ of the Simien Mountains National Park, stop for a short drink before continuing for 1 hour into the park to rendezvous with muleteers and armed scout. Check provisions, load mules, lunch in the town hotel and trek past the market and on the trail to the first camp Sankaber. Leaving Debark, the place is buzzing with people and life, a testament to its location on the ancient caravan route between Gondar and Axum, and you follow an undulating path up and down spurs, across the Lamma Wenz (river), and past welcoming villages. You round Aman Amba and keep close to the edge of the escarpment looking down on Adarmaz Camp in the valley below, before seeing the spectacular views from Sankaber, altitude 3230m. Trek time approx 4 hours.

Day 04 Sankaber to Gich, Tent FBA Trek from Sankaber to Gich Camp. The terrain is varied, fertile in parts, and harsh elsewhere, at first descending to the escarpment, near the head of the Wazla Wenz, where there is a dramatic view of the Jinbar Wenz waterfall cascading down the Geech Abyss. Then a steep trek up to Gich Village when you will really feel the effects of altitude. Sankaber altitude 3230m. Gich Camp 3630. Overall altitude gain 400m. Trek time 7/8 hours. Day 05 Gich via Imet Gogo 3926m to Chenek 3600m, Tent FBA Today you will take the periphery route - with its majestic and awe-inspiring views from the escarpment -via Imet Gogo to Chenek. You trek across the gently rising plateau to the famous viewpoint at Imet Gogo 3926ms. Here you may be lucky to see the rare Walia Ibex on the crags far below, so do approach Imet Gogo quietly. During this day you should also see the giant lobeilias adn the gelada baboons. From Imet Gogo head south east via Inatye to Chenek. Chenek altitude 3600m. So height gain at Imet Gogo nearly 700ms on Gich and at Chenek 370ms. Trek time around 7/8 hours. Day 06 Chenek to Ambiko 3600m, Tent FBA A long but interesting walk from Chenek at 11800ft./3600m to Ambiko at 3100m. You are now leaving the boundaries of the Simien Mountains National Park. This is primarily a wildlife sanctuary, formed in 1969 to protect endangered species such as the Walia Ibex, the Simien Wolf, and the Gelada Baboon. You may also see some of Ethiopia s 30 endemic bird species, about 9 of which can be seen in the Simiens. Unfortunately, the Simien Wolf has disappeared from this area, and the other species are continually being pushed away from their usual habitat. This is a sensitive area, and on environmental grounds we are conscious that vehicle support should be reserved for emergencies. Today the mules will head directly to camp and you have the choice of walking with them or of trekking to the summit of the Simien s second highest peak, Bwahit (4,430 m). After refreshments at the summit you will descend steeply towards the village of Chiro Liba where you will have lunch at the local school. Afterwards you continue the descent to the Mesheha River valley (2850m) and up the other side to Ambikwa camp at 3,100 m Camp at Ambiko at low altitude 3100m before summit day. Undulating alt +600m -1400m +200m. Overall loss 500m. Trek time approx 9/10 hours.

Day 07 Ras Deshen Summit 4543m.and back to Ambiko, Tent FBA Early start to trek from Ambikwa to Ras Deshen summit. You will trek up to the head of the valley and the village of Mizma where you will get your first view of your imposing goal. To reach it you will contour round a number of steep gullies ascending all the time until you find yourself on a rocky plateau, which is dominated by the three peaks, the middle one being the tallest. Scrambling up, you will notice that there are 2 distinct hog-back rock summits, the first being the highest. Ras Deshen 15157ft/4543m. This is Africa s fifth highest mountain and the highest in Ethiopia. This is it! It is then a relatively easy scramble to the top of one of Africa s highest mountains. After refreshments and rest at the top you will descend by the same route to Ambikwa camp a long a trek retracing your steps from the way up. A tough day. Alt +1343m 1343m. Trek time approx 11/12 hours maybe even longer. Day 08 Ambiko to Chenek, Tent FBA From Ambiko, you will trek to back to Sankaber for your last night under canvas. Day 09 Chenek to Gondar, Goha Hotel FBA A vehicle will be waiting to take you back to Gondar (4-5 hour drive) O/n Goha Hotel. Dinner and overnight Goha Hotel. Day 10 Fly to Lalibela Visit Rock Churches HB Morning flight to Lalibela (0845-0920hrs tbc). On arrival at Lalibela airport you are met by your guide and transferred to the town, where you stay at the Mount View or Tukul Village. After checking in visit the first of the Rock Churches. Lalibela is arguably the one place in Ethiopia that no visitor should miss. Were it virtually anywhere but in Ethiopia, Lalibela would rightly be celebrated as one of the wonders of the world. Perched at an altitude of 2630m, among the wild craggy mountains of Lasta and vast rocky escarpments, there is a stark cathedral-like grandeur to Lalibela, a strange, isolated town famed for its rock-hewn churches. Lalibela, formerly called Roha, now carries the name of the 11th Century King Lalibela of the Zagwe Dynasty. Dinner and overnight Mount View or Tukul Village

Day 11 Lalibela Full Day HB Today you can visit Asheton Mariam Monastery in the morning and in the afternoon see the second group of Rock Churches in Lalibela. Day 12 Fly to Lalibela to Addis, city hotel BB After breakfast and time to pack, transfer to the airport for the 1205-1440hrs (tbc) flight to Addis. You will be met on arrival and transferred to the Jupiter Hotel (booked on Bed and Breakfast basis) After checking in and a chance to relax you may choose to have a guided tour of Addis Ababa. Dinner to your own account. Day 13 Departure B After breakfast this morning check out. According to your flight time you are transferred to Addis Ababa airport. If you have several hours in Addis, there is an option to use the Hilton or Sheraton pool and gardens. NB Ethiopian schedules are flexible and a good level of understanding and tolerance is required not only with the flight schedules but also at Addis airport where security checks are tight and time-consuming. Then you will enjoy one of Africa s most wonderful destinations. Prices from 1598 pp based on 2 sharing and in a group of at least four. Excludes flights. Please see our Ethiopia Price Guide for costs and flights according to group sizes.
