Santa Fe: The Best of the Southwest for Beaux Arts Council Members of St Louis Art Museum with Curator Melissa Wolfe July 10-15, 2016 Overview Santa Fe is famous for attracting artists drawn to its wide-open spaces and adobe architecture from Georgia O Keeffe and Ansel Adams to modernists like painters Stuart Davis and Marsden Hartley. This tour will pay homage to Georgia O Keeffe, doyenne of American Modernism, including a visit to her home and studio in Abiquiu; a look at the landscapes she painted during summers at Ghost Ranch; a guided tour of the Georgia O Keeffe Museum; and a rare opportunity to see her letters, photographs, paintbrushes and palettes in the archives. We will also visit the city s museums of fine art and folk art, Native American and cutting edge art, private collections and artists studios. Enjoy sampling the best foodie restaurants in town, and sleeping in the lap of luxury at the historic La Fonda. Making the trip unforgettable will be a morning at Cochiti Pueblo to see corn dances celebrating Saint Bonaventure Feast Day and a night at the Santa Fe Opera to revel in Mozart s masterpiece, Don Giovanni. OPTIONAL: Arrive a few days early for International Folk Art Market, an extraordinary event where more than 150 artists from nearly 70 countries and six continents show and sell their wares and works of art. The Market runs from July 8 th to 10th. NOTE: The hotel will honor the group room rate for three days pre- and post-tour for anyone who would like to extend their stay, subject to availability.

Stops on our tour will provide an opportunity to learn about the venerable Palace of the Governors, which has served as the residence for 100 Spanish, Native American, Mexican, and American governors; St. Francis Cathedral, still a vital center for Catholic
worship; the Manhattan Project in nearby Los Alamos; and what makes Santa Fe the City Different. Enjoy a welcome reception at a private home followed by dinner at a local restaurant. Monday, July 11 th B, D SANTA FE Following breakfast (included daily in the hotel s La Plazuela Restaurant), we will walk across the Plaza to the New Mexico Museum of Art for a before-hours tour. The museum has one of the best collections of works by Taos Society Artists, Santa Fe Art Colony members and others who have been drawn to New Mexico. Mary Kershaw, the Director, will welcome us before a curator-led tour of the current exhibition, Southwest Sampler, a selection of works from the permanent collections. Time also to see current exhibitions: Finding a Contemporary Voice: the Legacy of Lloyd Kiva New and IAIA, which focuses on how the first Director of the local Institute of American Indian Art helped pave the way for generations of Native American artists to take their place in the global contemporary art field. Con Cariño: Artists Inspired by Lowriders, those abandoned cars that have been meticulously transformed into one-of-a-kind sculptures on wheels. Then continue on to the Georgia O Keeffe Museum for a curator-led tour and a special, behind-the-scenes visit at the O Keeffe Research Center for a fascinating look at personal correspondence, photographs of and by O Keeffe, and personal effects including her paintbrushes. Lunch and the afternoon are at leisure to give you an opportunity to explore galleries and shops on your own. Late this afternoon we will visit the Canyon Road home of Nedra Matteucci, preeminent collector and dealer of Western and American Indian art. A casual dinner follows at either the Tea House or El Farol. Tuesday, July 12 th B, L SANTA FE A private home nestled in the hills above Santa Fe promises to delight: a stunning contemporary home with collections of art, photography, sculpture and video installations that are eclectic and often whimsical. Next we will head to SITE Santa Fe, a cutting-edge art space, where a curator will welcome us and provide an overview of the current SITElines exhibition, much wider than a line, which focuses on contemporary art from the Americas and the interconnectedness that goes beyond mere geography. Time on your own to explore nearby galleries in the hip Railyard District. Lunch at locals favorite Vinaigrette Restaurant, followed by free time to explore galleries on Canyon Road. Late this afternoon we will head to Museum Hill to visit the
Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian, named for Mary Cabot Wheelwright (1878-1958), the museum s founder. The building is shaped like a traditional, octagonal Navajo Hogan and displays an incredible collection of 19th- and 20th-century baskets, pottery, sculpture, weavings, metalwork, photography, and paintings, including contemporary works by Native American artists. We will have a guided tour of the newly opened (July 7, 2015) Jim and Lauris Phillips Center for the Study of Southwestern Jewelry. Then enjoy an after-hours tour at the Museum of International Folk Art. We will primarily focus on the remarkable Girard Collection of nearly 25,000 objects. Time allowing, also see special exhibitions including The Morris Miniature Circus; amulets, votive offerings, and ritual objects from the Asian collection in Sacred Realm: Blessings & Good Fortune Across Asia; and a look at the history and art form of Flamenco. Dinner is on our own this evening. Wednesday, July 13 th B, L, D SANTA FE / GHOST RANCH / ABIQUIU / SANTA FE This morning we will head north to O Keeffe country, set amid striking mesas, cliffs and valleys that so inspired the artist when she lived here for nearly 35 years. We will visit the two places where she divided her time, in Abiquiu and Ghost Ranch. At Ghost Ranch, where O Keeffe summered on a small parcel of this 20,000-acre dude and cattle ranch, we will take a tour by coach to restricted areas to see a number of the landscapes she painted as well as to pass by her home there. Then drive to the traditional village of Abiquiu for a guided tour of Georgia O Keeffe s home and studio. The Spanish Colonial era compound she purchased in 1945 and restored largely remains as she left it in 1984. The Abiquiu house and surrounding views were a great source of inspiration to O Keeffe, who produced works featuring the patio and black door, the cottonwood trees along the Chama River, the White Place, and the road to Santa Fe. Lunch at nearby Abiquiu Inn before we return to Santa Fe, arriving by 3:30 p.m. This evening promises to be a night to remember at the Santa Fe Opera. A sumptuous buffet dinner and a pre-opera lecture will fortify us for a performance of Mozart s Don Giovanni, the story of a seducer who manipulates at least three women too many. Thursday, July 14 th B, L, D SANTA FE / COCHITI PUEBLO / SANTA FE Begin the day at Cochiti Pueblo, whose clans are celebrating Saint Bonaventure Feast Day with corn dances that promise to be unforgettable. Next we will visit the hacienda and studio of artist and collector Bill Schenck, best known for paintings that incorporate techniques from Photo-Realism and Pop Art to both praise and mimic classic western images. Bill lived in New York and Jackson before moving to Santa Fe in 1996, where he bought a historic adobe compound on 11 acres to house his collections of early paintings of the Southwest, prehistoric pottery, Navajo rugs, and
Thomas Molesworth furniture. We will also see his on-site studio, where we will see new influences and inspirations from the Southwest emerging in his art. Lunch at the quintessentially Southwestern San Marcos Café and Feed Store, set in the open grasslands south of town with peacocks, chickens and the occasional goat milling around.
