2018 Summer Camp Guide Resident Camp & Troop Camp Plus

Dear Parents and Caregivers: Camp has something for everyone! Our camps offer a wide variety of opportunities for you and your daughter to find the perfect camp experience. Whether you choose a Resident Camp opportunity or Troop Camp Plus your daughter will make new friends, try new things, learn independence, and so much more all with the guidance and supervision of a caring camp staff. Our resident camp programs are held at Bear Creek Aquatic Camp, newly accredited by the American Camp Association. This accreditation ensures that we hold to the highest standards of programming and safety. Bear Creek Aquatic Camp is situated on beautiful Kentucky Lake where we take full advantage of the waterfront and all it has to offer including our giant water trampoline, sailboats, and kayaks. In 2018, we ll be adding a few more improvements to enhance your child s experience. Located at Camp Pennyroyal, we offer Troop Camp Plus. This outdoor experience offers troops an opportunity to camp out, cook over a campfire and try new things in the outdoors with the support of trained staff. About 300 girls and adults participated in Troop Camp Plus last summer and had a blast. Troop leaders remarked that girls came out of their shells and became more self-confident. Leaders saw their girls working as a team and owning the responsibility that comes with camp life all were more confident in taking risks and trying new things! Whether campers are playing, exploring nature, conquering new heights, or becoming part of a camp family, they re creating memories that will last a lifetime. We look forward to seeing everyone at camp! Jacqueline Ford Chief Executive Officer Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana 2115 Lexington Road Louisville, KY 40206 ii

Resident Camp 2018 Bear Creek Aquatic Camp Welcome to Bear Creek Aquatic Camp! Camp is a place where you can feel strong and empowered by conquering challenges and caring for others. Whether you re a first-time camper or a seasoned expert seeking new adventures, you will explore, play, and grow while creating memories that will last a lifetime. Nestled on a bay on scenic Kentucky Lake, Bear Creek Aquatic Camp has a little something for everyone. With 200 wooded acres of waterfront property and two miles of shoreline, Bear Creek is a beautiful setting for swimming, hiking, kayaking, sailing, and campfires. During each session, campers will enjoy specific unit programming for the first half of the day, then experience traditional and aquatic camp activities in the afternoons and evenings. This summer, we are offering new and exciting activities and adventures that will help girls build a strong sense of self, gain practical life skills, and of course, have fun! Camp Staff Bear Creek Aquatic Camp is run by well-trained, enthusiastic, and caring individuals from western Kentucky and across the country. Counselors and camp staff are enthusiastic, caring, and supportive. They are selected based on their experience, ability to be strong role models, and their genuine desire to work and live by the Girl Scout Law. Living at Camp Bear Creek Aquatic Camp is a rustic camp property. Campers of the same age level live in groups called units, and each unit is comprised of 4 to 5 screened-in cabins. Girls sleep in cabins of four to eight campers, and staff sleep in a separate, nearby tent or cabin within the same unit. Campers may also have the opportunity to sleep in hammocks in an open-air, covered unit. Nutritious, well-balanced meals are served family-style in Honeybee Lodge. Girls may also have the opportunity to plan and cook a meal outdoors. Please contact us with any dietary restrictions or allergies at least one month before camp. Our knowledgeable staff are ready to guide you through your outdoor experience, and make sure you walk away with new skills and lots of fun memories. Whether your troop is going on their first camping excursion, or are seasoned veterans ready for a new outdoor challenge, there is something for you at Troop Camp Plus. Programs The beauty of Troop Camp Plus is that your experience is entirely up to your troop! Troops come for as short or long as they would like. This allows for troops to be flexible and make the best choice based on the skill and readiness of their girls. From 10:00 am 5:00 pm, troops may participate in rotations of council-led programming. No matter your length of stay, our programs are designed to ensure your troop will receive similar outdoor experiences each weekend. Troops are always welcome to pass on council programming at any point to work on badges with their girls on their own. Badge packets specific to Pennyroyal will be available upon request. Badge packets are also great to work through in the evenings when troops provide their own programming. Troop Camp Plus is all about programming to enhance a girl s comfort in nature and encourages outdoor progression, please see Outdoor Progression on page 7 for more information. Camp Staff Troop Camp Plus is run by qualified, friendly, and attentive staff with a passion for introducing the outdoors to girls of all ages. All staff are selected on their experience, ability to be strong role models, and their genuine desire to work and live by the Girl Scout Law. During training, staff learn how to provide quality programming where girls feel supported and safe to stretch themselves past their comfort zones to try new things in an outdoor setting. Troop Supervision Requirements To help with girl progression and to allow for more girls to attend, bring only enough adults to satisfy ratios stated in Safety Activity Checkpoints. All adults must be GSK members with a completed background check. Troops must have an adult who has completed GSK Camp-Out Training and must have a certified First Aider (this can be the same person). For more information, please visit the GSK website and check out our training opportunities. Living at Camp Troops will be camping out in either open-air cabins or platform tent units. Troop accommodations will be honored on a first come first served basis, with preference for cabins going to younger troops. We encourage troops who have experience in open-air cabins to venture out to try a tent unit. For our Daisy troops who would like to try an overnight, but might not be ready for open-air cabins, indoor accommodations are available upon request. Meals Troop Camp Plus is a great time to learn and try new outdoor cooking skills. Troops will get two hours for lunch and time to rest each day. Troops provide their own food, and council will have unit boxes and other cooking equipment available for rent at no extra charge. Health and Safety Troop Camp Plus is at its heart a troop camping experience, so we encourage troop leaders to look over the Camping Safety Activity Checkpoints for health and supervision standards. How to Register Registration opens on April 1, 2018 and closes two weeks before the Thursday of the weekend you plan to attend. During a troop meeting ask your girls these three questions: How many nights should we stay? Should we sleep in cabins or try a tent unit? What kinds of meals should we try while at camp? With your girls answers to these questions, you are ready to begin the two-step process of registration: 1. Go to the GSK website s Activities Calendar and register your troop for each day that you intend to be at camp. 2. Follow the link in the activity explanation that will take you to the Troop Camp Plus Jotform. Make sure to complete the entire form to ensure we have all the information we need to provide a fantastic experience for you! Discounts and Refunds If your troop renewed its membership during Early Bird Renewal, you will receive 25% off all Troop Camp Plus registrations until May 31, 2018! So make sure to renew early to take advantage of that great discount before it s gone! Full refunds will be given until closing of registration. After registration closes, no refunds will be given. Camp will go on rain or shine with council-led rainy day activities provided during bad weather. 12
