UPDATED MAY 12, 2011 WILLIAM MARTIN PUTMAN North Carolina to Alabama to Collin County Texas William Martin Putman was born in Morgan County Alabama on January 18, 1837. He was a son of William Putman and Susan Stephens of North Carolina and a grandson of Griggs and Sarah Putman of Rutherford County North Carolina. His parents, William and Susan, left Rutherford County North Carolina and was briefly in South Carolina and Georgia before going to Lawrence and then Morgan County Alabama in the 1820s. It was there on January 21, 1831 that he married Susan Stephens. Young William married Alice A. Crow in Morgan County Alabama on October 25, 1857. Alice was born in Decatur, Morgan County Alabama on October 22, 1838. Their first child, Sarah, was born in Alabama in 1858. They then moved along with his parents to Pontotoc County Mississippi and were there by the 1860 census time. William and Susan Putman, his parents were there in the 1860 census, but I do not find them afterwards, but there was no index for 1870, and if they were still alive in 1880, they would not be shown unless they had children 10 or younger. William and Alice remained in Mississippi and were in Lee County in the 1880 census with three sons. Their two daughters had married by then. William M. Putman served in the CSA Army during the Civil War. He was injured and then captured at the Battle of Gettysburg (Pennsylvania). In about 1890 or 1891, William and Alice and their three sons, John, James and Frank, moved to Copeville in Collin County Texas just north and east of Dallas. William and Alice were to remain there until they died. They were both with their son James in 1900 in Collin County. In 1910 and 1920 Alice was still living with James. I believe they ran an inn or hotel in Copeville. William Putman died in Copeville on August 22, 1905 and Alice died there May 29, 1921. Sarah Jane Putman She was born in Morgan County Alabama in very late 1857 or early 1858. She was married or at least gone from the family by 1880. Now, I later find out that the upcoming Elizabeth was actually named Sarah Elizabeth. Therefore this Sarah and the coming Elizabeth may well be one and the same person. I think I would lean that way right now. Sarah Elizabeth (Betsy) Putman

She was born July 28, 1858. But, as mentioned she may be the Sarah mentioned above, especially if her name is Sarah Elizabeth. Just not certain, probably the same gal. Betsy married John Franklin Knowles in Guntown, Mississippi January 25, 1874. He was born in Pontotoc County Mississippi September 26, 1854, and died in Paris, Lamar County Texas December 6, 1924.
