Invitation to the 5 th Asian Shipbuilding Experts Forum October 2011 Asian shipbuilding industries have grown up a lot and supply most merchant ships to the world market. We are now in a position to be responsible for ensuring safety and environment in international shipping transactions. It is an unfortunate fact that despite accounting for some 90% of all newly-built ships worldwide, Asian shipbuilding industries continue to have little voice for reflecting our ideas to international regulations and standards. Stricter regulations are expected to be imposed to ensure safety and environment protection in maritime industry. In order to cope with these trends effectively, entire Asian shipbuilding industries need to quickly identify general trends in international regulations and standards and improve mutual communication in the region. In other words, shipbuilding experts in Asia need to share information and enhance their mutual understanding through discussions on the matters that could significantly affect shipbuilding industries. We firmly believe that such efforts are needed to develop reasonable and acceptable international regulations and standards based on shipbuilding technologies; to establish truly effective maritime safety and environment protection; and to contribute to sound growth in the shipbuilding industry. Experts involved in Asian shipbuilding are cordially invited to attend the 5 th ASEF in Busan on 1 st ~2 nd December 2011 which is the second time to be held in Korea.
