Glenochy Lagoon with Humboldt Mountains Glenochy, at the head of Wakatipu, is 48 kilometes fom Queenstown. In the mountain valleys beyond the township ae some of New Zealand s best-known multi-day tacks. Thee ae also geat day walks on these tacks and many shote walks. Histoy Glacies sculpted this mountainous landscape until, some 15,000 yeas ago, ice melt stated filling Wakatipu. Tectonic uplift and weatheing still shape the schist whee it is not coveed by tussock, beech foest and subalpine shubland. Māoi fist visited hee in seach of pounamu/geenstone and moa. They wee hapū o extended family goups fom Otago and the Southland coast, who left evidence of about 30 summe campsites. The fist Euopean settles wee unholde William Rees and his family in 1860. By 1862 the lue of gold bought many moe. The dawcads fo ealy settles wee esouces: gold, scheelite, gazing land and timbe, but touism soon followed. Commecial mountain guiding began in 1882 on Mt Eanslaw/ Pikiakatahi, and within seven yeas thee wee six hotels and guesthouses at the head of the lake. Until 1962, when the Glenochy Road was opened, touists elied on boats and pack tacks to get hee. Two yeas afte the oad came though Mount Aspiing National Pak was fomed. By 1990 the national pak was vitually twice the size and became pat of Te Wāhipounamu South West New Zealand Wold Heitage Aea; a classification that ecognises the egion s significance to global landscape consevation.

The tack passes the emains of the Glenochy Battey and the State Mine, last opeated in the 1960s. 6Scheelite Invincible Gold Mine The Bonnie Jean Hut (day use only) is a half-hou climb up a maked tack fom the end of the old Mount Judah Road. Ten minutes befoe Bonnie Jean Hut, a shot signposted tack leads to The Booze Hut, elocated and estoed in 2011. Glenochy Lagoon with Humboldt Mountains Glenochy Boadwalk 1 Glenochy Walkway 1 2 hou loop tack Stat/finish: signposted fom Glenochy watefont Histoy A geat family walk, with views of Mt Eanslaw/Pikiakatahi, Mt Alfed/Ai and the suounding anges. This tack has ecently been extended. Dogs ae allowed on a lead only. The boadwalk taveses wetlands just noth of Glenochy with plenty of oppotunity to view bid life. Native species include, pied stilt/poaka, South Island pied oystecatche/ tōea, Austalasian bitten/matuku, New Zealand shovelle/ kuuwhengu, gey teal/tete (in sping), gey duck/pāea, and scaup/pāpango. The New Zealand falcon/kāeaea may be seen soaing above the wetland hunting fo pey. In heavy o polonged ain the Glenochy Lagoon section of the walkway becomes flooded. Cae is equied. 3 Heathe Jock 45 minutes one way to Reid Stat/finish: Glenochy Road, 15 minutes fom Glenochy Following the tue left bank of Ceek, a popula tout fishing steam, this sometimes boggy tack to Reid povides good oppotunities fo viewing watefowl and Paadise and the Dat Valley. 6 Invincible Gold Mine 1 h 30 min up, 1 hou down Stat/finish: Eanslaw Bun Rees Valley Road (gavel, with fods) 30 minutes fom Glenochy Glenochy Boadwalk 3 4 one waywalkway 1 hous Glenochy Stat/finish: end of the old Mt Judah Road, 2 hous fom ca pak Fom the Mt Judah Road below Bonnie Jean Hut, a maked tack an old mining up a zigzag to Heathe Jock Hut 7follows Eanslaw Bun oad (3 bunks). Fom thee the tack sidles down and acoss to Bonnie Jean Hut, befoe dopping back down to Mt Judah Road. 4 Mt McIntosh Loop 8 10 hous etun Stats at Whakaai ca pak, finishes on the Queenstown Glenochy Road beside the Buckle Bun, 15 minutes walk fom the ca pak Fom The Junction (1 hou 30 min fom the ca pak) follow the maked tack which dops steeply down to the Buckle Bun. 8A Kea steadybasin climb on an old mining oad leads to McIntye Hut (3 bunks). A futhe 1 hou 30 min on is McIntosh Hut (4 bunks) on the flanks of Mt McIntosh, this is a half-hou climb beyond Long Gully. Dopping back to Long Gully, a steep climb leads along a idge giving supeb views of Wakatipu, Mt Eanslaw/Pikiakatahi, and the Dat Valley. The tack, going though ovegown bush in some sections, dops steeply along a fence line to the Glenochy Road beside the Buckle Bun. Rive cossing expeience is essential. 5 Ceek This tack was built by mines in the 1880s and featues geat views of the Rees Valley and Mt Eanslaw/Pikiakatahi. Remains of the wate wheel and a unique set of seven bedans lage, slowly evolving cast ion bowls that gound the oe ae also visible. Hais on 7 Eanslaw Bun 4 6 hous one-way Stat/finish: the tueday-walk left bank of options the Eanslaw Bun patway along Loves Leap Road, a ight tun off the gavelled 9 Sylvan Road, 20 minutes fom Glenochy Glenochy Paadise 11 Natue Walk Following the Eanslaw Bun though bush to the tussock basin at the head of the valley, thee ae impessive views of an icefall on Mt Eanslaw/Pikiakatahi. Climb though foest to the fagile Sugaloaf with geat views of the Rockbun and valleys. The descent to the is steep. Fom the ca pak at the shelte, coss a swing bidge to the well-fomed tack weaving though beech foest. Beyond Sugaloaf Steam, the tack follows the old bidle path, built in the 1870s, up to Bidal Veil Steam and a sidle above Goge. The thid swing bidge takes you back acoss the Route Bun to open gassed flats. At the maked junction, tun ight to Flats Hut (bookings equied late Octobe to late Apil), o left to continue towads the. 13 13 Eanslaw Bun Sylvan Loop 49 Mt McIntosh 40 minutes one way o 1 h 40 min etuning via the tamline loop Stat/finish: Sylvan ca pak, 30 minutes fom Glenochy (gavel oad) 15 Scott Ceek Follow the tack to Flats as above, continue left towads the. It is a steady climb though stunning beech foest cossing two swing bidges. A ecent slip allows excellent views of the valley below. Cae should be taken cossing this slip, especially afte heavy ain. The impessive ae situated on the edge of the bushline next to Hut (bookings equied late Octobe to late Apil). Hais on 9 Sylvan day-walk options 16 Glacie Bun 11 Natue Walk Time: 40 min 1 h etun This ecently upgaded, well-defined tack leads though old moaine ive teaces and vey tall ed beech/tawhaiaunui to petty Sylvan, home to bown tout and numeous small native fish. Retuning via the 1920s tamline loop, you can egeneating 8compae Kea Basin beech in this cutove aea to the untouched foest that you walk though on the way in. Fom the Shelte ca pak, coss the on the swing bidge and follow the main fo appoximately 10 15 minutes. A maked tunoff on the left takes a winding path down fom the main tack onto the valley floo, whee you pass though beautiful ed beech/tawhaiaunui-dominated foest. Note: The tamline loop includes a ive cossing. Afte meandeing its way though this flat aea fo 10 15 minutes, the tack ejoins the main at Sugaloaf Steam. Fom hee you can eithe cay on acoss the Sugaloaf swing 10 Sugaloaf Rockbun bidge up the, o tun back and follow the main tack back to the ca pak (20 30 minutes). 10 Sugaloaf Rockbun 2 h 30 min 4 h one way, 8.8 km 18 Wakatipu s Islands tussock basin beneath Mt Eanslaw/Pikiakatahi, with stunning views up the Rees Valley towads Rees. The zigzag tack 3stats Heathe Jock on the low teace noth of Lennox, whee the bush edge meets the teace. One hou up, Eanslaw Hut (basic) has 4 bunks; 15 minutes futhe on thee is a ock bivvy just above the bushline. Kea Basin adjoins the Mt Eanslaw/Pikiakatahi Tōpuni, which ecognises the histoic and cultual impotance of this mountain to Kāi Tahu.
