ATM MET cooperation ATM high Level objectives adressed by the Airbus Defence and Space / Luciad solution (as per ATM Master Plan ed. 2015) Optimization of the SES by combining 4D trajectory and airspace reservation (ARES) planning Reduction of air traffic impact on the environment Integration of MET services coming from the 4DWeatherCube in 2015 Fully weather-ready solution

EUMETNET Solution 8

MET usage in ATM Today s business relies on ICAO annex 3 regulated products defined in the 1950 s. New products coming out from science not fully integrated into ATM Hazardous weather such as icing, convection, clear air turbulence Sub-optimal use of Weather information 60% of ATM delays due to meteorological factors 43% of accidents occurred during operations in adverse weather (source IATA safety report 2006).

SESAR MET Solution: the 4DWeatherCube Two high level objectives One stop shop for MET Delivers a seamless consistent view of weather for ATM Additional technical objectives SWIM compliance Fit-for-purpose MET information Strong European cooperation (research and IT) through SESAR WP11.2 France (MéteoFrance), Germany (Deutsche Wetterdienst) and United Kingdom (UK Met Office) under EUMETNET aegis

Consolidation example: nowcasting of convection Merging the convection products from UK, Germany and France to have a pan European product Erasing and smoothing the boundaries Ensuring best MET information at every point in space

Translation example: Icing contours Using ATM units instead of MET units (for example FL instead of hpa) Converting physical parameters into severity levels Extracting only useful information (contours instead of gridded data)

4DWeatherCube Users in SESAR1 8 MET services that the whole ATM community can discover through the European SWIM registry 4DWeatherCube accessed by multiple ATM partners : mainly industry in SESAR1 Validation exercise, SWIM Master Class, TOPLINK

Airbus Defence and Space / Luciad Application 4DWeatherCube Services used to optimize trajectories CAPS : Collaborative Airspace Provision ServiceApplication Consume hazardous weather service from 4DWeatherCube ConSA : Contrail Service for Aviation Consume temperature and humidity 4D grids from 4DWeatherCube

Airbus Defence and Space / Luciad solution: CAPS based on SWIM [Collaborative Airspace Provision Service-Application] The key to success of future SESAR is to manage the 4D trajectory of all SES- flights in the best possible way. Optimization of BTs (Business Trajectories) seems to conflict with static volumes of reserved airspace (ARES). To flexibly integrate ARES into the SES maintaining optimal network performance Airbus Defence and Space together with Luciad developed the CAPS application in the scope of the SWIM Master Class 2014.

CAPS based on SWIM Business Problem.. With an increasing number of flights following the rules of Free Route Airspace in the Single European Sky, the available airspace becomes more and more occupied. Naturally the number of conflicts between Business Flights (4D Trajectories) and reserved portions of airspace (ARES = Airspace Reservation) will increase...and SWIM-based Solution CAPS based on SWIM searches for a reservable airspace, optimally suiting the Airspace Users needs. On-the-fly calculated conflict detection to assisst users in proposal of ARES with minimal impact onto the network Use Cases Mission planning (Tactical Training of military Aircraft, Technical Flights, RPAS, etc.) What-if analysis (based on Weather Data, Volceuro service, etc.) 16

CAPS based on SWIM Technical architecture

CAPS based on SWIM The geographical situational awareness display includes flightplan data from the NOP (Network Operation Portal), static reserved Airspace (ARES) and a calculated dynamic volume of airspace with least amount of conflicts to the ATM network! Airspace Users fill the form to request an ARES 18

CAPS based on SWIM This screenshot shows the same ARES (as on the slide before), but providing a 4D view of the situation by taking the time factor into consideration! 19

CAPS based on SWIM A closer view on the output of the solution calculated by CAPS. 20

CAPS based on SWIM The calculated ARES from CAPS after data import into a fielded Multi-Mission-Planning-System. 21

CAPS based on SWIM 3 separated volumes of ARES from CAPS to demonstrate enhanced analysis options for the operator, using dynamic calculation of multiple volumes of ARES. 22

CAPS based on SWIM Optimizing the calculated ARES for environment by the use of icing information. 2

Airbus Defence and Space / Luciad solution: ConSA [Contrail Service for Aviation] For the SWIM Master Class 2015, AIRBUS Defence and Space together with Luciad developed a SWIM-based service to support ATM stakeholders in the effort to reduce aviation s impact to the Earth s environment. Partnership were established with EUMETNET for meteorological support. The objective is to reduce forming of contrails as those, whilst converting into cirrus cloud, cause a net warming effect. The contrails algorithm has been developed by Dr. Schumann from DLR. The solution is in line with SESAR s prime objective Reduction of environmental impact by 10% per flight.

ConSA Business Problem.. With an increasing number of flights around the globe the need for environmental protection will become much more important. Although regulations for contrail generation from aircraft are not in place today the importance of environmental protection has already been recognized word wide. ATM stakeholders need to consider all aspects of environmental impact will raise over time. Any possible reduction of environmental disadvantage needs to be evaluated in future...and SWIM-based Solution ConSA calculates probable forming of contrails on given weather conditions provided there are flights in those areas. Use cases 4D Trajectory planning and management Environmental Awareness for ATM operators 25

ConSA Technical architecture

ConSA The geographical situational awareness display calculates and shows the predicted amount of contrail formation for a flight trajectory at different altitudes. 27

ConSA Zones of high contrail formation can be automatically identified and visualized. 28

ConSA Contrail formation prediction for a trajectory can be combined with other weather products 29

CAPS and ConSA combined Optimizing the calculated ARES for environment by the use of contrail prediction information Combining both applications on the basis of weather data service from the 4DWeatherCube and very high performance geospatial engine brings cutting edge technology to ATM operators. 3

User benefits CAPS/ConSA: Support SESAR concepts, by smoothly combining 4D-Trajectorywith ARES-planning providing improved transparency, better situational awareness and enhanced efficiency Supporting SWIM-based collaborative coordinating processess in ATM Fast development using flexible components Solution built on open standards 4DWeatherCube Consolidated and harmonized view Translated to relevant data format Best MET information available Fit-for-purpose No MET expertise required to use advanced MET products Easily integrable in ATM systems SWIM compliant web services Single access point for 8 MET services : the MET-GATE One tool addressing ATFCM, ATM and MET

Conclusion Video of the final product : https://vimeo.com/153516896 MET ATM integration and technical solution have been validated Dealing with new partners opens new horizons and business opportunities Next steps are moving to operations and business development

Way forward On going work between partners to improve and promote the solution Airbus Defence and Space / Luciad: Evaluation of other SWIM services could they add reasonable information and/or functionality to CAPS based on SWIM? Evaluation of enhancement by adding stereoscopic 3D view World ATM Congress 2016 EUMETNET SWIM Global Demo 2016 Operational in Sesar Deployment Manager Keep integrating and promoting new MET products SESAR workshop in 2016 for the whole meteorological community
