LAND OF ENCHANTMENT NEW MEXICO Including the Santa Fe Opera! August 11-17, 2010 LEADERSHIP Leading the expedition will be anthropologist Bryan Bates and our Santa Fe host, Stephane Ligtelyn, a long-time friend of Betchart Expeditions. Bryan Bates is a biology and anthropology instructor at Coconino Community College in Flagstaff, Arizona. Bryan teaches a course on the Colorado Plateau that focuses on the natural history and human history of the region. Bryan has taught in Indian communities and has a special interest in archaeoastronomy of the ancient people of the Southwest. He has led several trips for Betchart on the Ancient Anasazi, from New Mexico and throughout Arizona. Bryan looks forward to sharing his knowledge of the Southwest with expedition members. ITINERARY DAY 1 Wed Aug 11 HOME TO ALBUQUERQUE Arrive in Albuquerque by 2 pm and transfer independently to the Nativo Lodge (2 nights) near Old Town Albuquerque. In late afternoon enjoy a walking tour of Old Town, a welcome social, introductions and dinner. D DAY 2 Thu Aug 12 ALBUQUERQUE & ACOMA PUEBLO Our introduction to New Mexico s Indian Southwest will begin this morning with a special visit to the Maxwell Museum of Anthroplogy at the University of New Mexico. We will have a special tour by a Museum docent of the People at the Southwest Exhibit and Contemporary Southwest Gallery. We will then drive west of Albuquerque to the Acoma Pueblo ( Sky City ). Perched on a dramatic 367-foot high sandstone mesa west of Albuquerque, Acoma is an outstanding location to explore Native American heritage and Indian life in the US today. We will walk the ancient streets, enjoy a lunch of traditional Indian foods at the Sky City Cultural Center, and then explore the San Esteban del Rey Mission. Return to Albuquerque for an evening at leisure. B,L DAY 3 Fri Aug 13 ALBUQUERQUE TO TAOS PUEBLO Today, we will enjoy a special visit to the Indian Arts and Culture Museum in Santa Fe, where we will have a special introduction to their collection. Of special interest will be a major exhibition based on eight years of collaboration among Native American elders, artists, scholars, teachers, writers and museum professionals. More than 1,300 artifacts from the Museum s collections are displayed accompanied by poetry, story, song, and scholarly discussion. In late morning, we will drive north to Taos Pueblo -- a cultural mecca for artists -- for lunch at historic Doc Martins at the Taos Inn, and an afternoon visit to the San Francisco De Assisi Mission Church, the Taos Art Museum, and Millicent Rogers Museum. Taos is the only living Native American community that is designated both a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and a National Historic Landmark. The multi-storied adobe buildings have been continuously inhabited for over 1000 years. Overnight at the Hotel Don Fernando de Taos. B,L

DAY 4 Sat Aug 14 CHIMAYO TO SANTA FE Today we will explore the historic village of Chimayo. El Sanctuario de Chimayo has been called the Lourdes of America. We will have time at leisure to explore the museum, trading and mercantile store, galleries, and historic Santa Cruz church before we drive toward Santa Fe. We will next visit the Shidoni Foundry & Tesuque Glassworks. One of the top fine art foundries in the United States, located just a few miles north of Santa Fe, Shidoni Foundry s galleries include bronze sculptures and other art works, and a rare chance to find out what goes on behind the scenes when a bronze statue is created. Adjacent to the foundry you'll find a bronze sculpture gallery where you can browse among sculptures in styles ranging from contemporary to traditional. A self-guided tour leaflet in the gallery and walk through the shop allows you to follow the amazing process that results in a completed bronze sculpture. Next to Shidoni, you'll also find Tesuque Glassworks where daily glassblowing demonstrations give a chance to watch owner Charlie Miner and other glass artists at work. We ll then enjoy a preview buffet dinner at the Santa Fe Opera and the evening performance of Madame Butterfly. Old Santa Fe Inn (3 nights). B DAY 5 SANTA FE Sun Aug 15 Our adventure in Santa Fe will continue with a walking tour of Old Santa Fe followed by visits to one of the fine museums. In the afternoon we ll visit the Allan Houser Foundry & Sculpture Garden. Allan Houser was one of the most important artists of the 20th century and has left a lasting legacy for us all to enjoy. Renowned as a sculptor, painter, and teacher, his work is featured in museums, private and corporate collections throughout the world. The Allan Houser Foundry has been in operation since 1995. It was started to help the Houser family complete Allan Houser s lifetime works, and has been casting the works of slect artists since 2002. Evening at leisure in Santa Fe. B DAY 6 BANDELIER NATIONAL MONUMENT Mon Aug 16 LOS ALAMOS & SANTA FE Following breakfast, we will depart this morning for the Bradbury Science Museum in Los Alamos. Here we will see this important museum on the work of scientists at Los Alamos. We will continue to Bandelier National Monument to see the cliff cave dwellings. Bandelier's history extends back for over10,000 years when nomadic hunter-gatherers followed migrating wildlife across the mesas and canyons. By 1150 AD Ancestral Pueblo people began to build more permanent settlements. Reminders of these past times are still evident in the park as are the strong ties of the modern Pueblo people. By 1550 the Ancestral Pueblo people had moved from their homes here to pueblos along the Rio Grande. Later Spanish settlers made their homes in Frijoles Canyon. We ll return to Sante Fe for afternoon at leisure and dinner in celebration of our journey! Then enjoy a performance of the Magic Flute at the Santa Fe Opera this evening. B,D DAY 7 Tues Aug 17 TO ALBUQUERQUE & HOME Following breakfast, transfer to Albuquerque this morning for flights home. B
