MACHU PICCHU LODGE TO LODGE TREK OCTOBER 23 - NOVERMBER 2, 2011 With Optional Manu Biophere Reserve Pretrip to the Peruvian Amazon October 20-24, 2011 We invite you to join this once-in-a-lifetime trekking journey! It will take you along the magnificent Salkantay Valley where you will travel through spectacular snow-covered high mountain scenery to lush cloud forest en route to Machu Picchu. The trek includes a 15,000 foot pass and will then continue through isolated mountain villages, potato farms and coffee plantations with bromeliads, orchids and butterflies surrounding you. It is an amazing personal experience of the high Andes and Peruvian culture. Please let me know what questions you have! En route, take a break to visit the Inca ruins of Tarawasi near the town of Limatambo (1 1/2 hrs from Cusco). Pass thru the mountain village of Mollepata. Stop for a coffee break, before ascending a winding mountain road to Marcoccasa (30 min. from Mollepata by vehicle). Here we begin our trek to Saroypampa, an old route called the Camino Real (Royal Path). Enjoy a 4-hour trek (Hiking level: moderate). At the head of the valley is Salkantay peak, the second most sacred peak in Inca mythology and at 20,600 ft, the highest in the region. Box lunch. Afternoon at leisure to adjust to the altitude. Evening briefing by the fireplace is followed by aperitifs and dinner. Night at Salkantay Lodge.

DAY 5 SORAYPAMPA Thurs Oct 27 Breakfast at the lodge. Today the most popular activity is the half-day hike to a glacial lake where the more adventurous take a very short swim! (3-4 hours) (Hiking level: moderate to challenging) This activity is excellent for acclimatization and a first immersion into highmountain trekking. In the afternoon, you may choose to follow the glacial swim with a relaxing soak in the outdoor jacuzzi. In the evening the guide will brief the trekking party on gear and the itinerary for the following day. Lunch and dinner at the lodge. DAY 6 Fri Oct 28 SORAYPAMPA TO WAYRA LODGE AT HUAYRACCMACHAY (12,600 feet) Breakfast at the lodge. The is the big day: the start of the four-day trek to Machu Picchu. After an early start, we will hike up the Rio Blanco valley, circling Humantay Peak across from Salkantay Peak. The highest point in the trek is a pass at 15,000 feet. (You may ride a horse if you prefer.) Hiking Time: 4-6 hours. Total excursion time: 5-7 hours. Hiking Level: Challenging with the 15,000 foot mountain pass. At the pass, stop to take in views of snow-capped peaks of the Vilcabamba Range in every direction, with the south face of Salkantay towering above us. Dinner and overnight at the lodge. DAY 7 Sat Oct 29 HUAYRACCMACHAY to COLPA LODGE AT COLLPAPAMPA (9,200 feet) Enjoy a leisurely breakfast at the lodge. Begin our trek by hiking downhill above the Salkantay River, through increasingly verdant scenery. Hiking Time: 3-4 hours. Hiking Level: Easy to moderate. Colpa Lodge is on an open promontory at the confluence of 3 rivers. The outdoor hot tub at the lodge has prominent views of lush green mountains and a small town in the far distance. Dinner and overnight at Colpa Lodge. DAY 8 Sun Oct 30 COLLPAPAMPA TO LUCMA LODGE at LUCMABAMBA (6,900 feet) Breakfast at the lodge. Depart early today and head down the Santa Teresa River Valley, through more populated rural areas. Pass through orchards and coffee plantations (said to be among the best organic coffees in the world).

Stop along the river for a hot picnic lunch. Trek another hour, then take a vehicle to the head of the Llactapata Inca Trail (30 min. drive). Climb 30 minutes to Lucma Lodge, set in an avocado orchard. Visit a coffee grower near the small village of Lucmabamba. Dinner and overnight at Lucma Lodge. Hiking Time: 5-6 hours.
