LOVE RETURNED DRAFT 01 Screenplay by Hilda Hiong

1 INT. STAIRCASE. HOME. LONDON AFTERNOON 20 years ago. Panning through old photographs by the staircase downward of when PARKER and EMILIE TAYLOR were dating to their marriage photos, when they had their first child PARKER and their second child PARKER. 2 EXT. DARKNESS. CAR CRASH. Suddenly, camera pans to a cloud of darkness. A car crashing is heard and glimpses of light and fire are seen. 3 EXT. RAINING. FUNERAL. LATE AFTERNOON A rose is placed in front of the tombstone of EMILIE PARKER, inscribed is a beloved wife and mother. 4 INT. OFFICE. LONDON MIDDAY PARKER is working hard in the office, striving to do well for his sons. 5 INT. CLASSROOM. SCHOOL MIDDAY PARKER age 18 is hard at work in school. He is head down, writing vehemently. 6 INT. CLASSROOM. SCHOOL PARKER age 13 is on his phone, distracted. A TEACHER approaches and asks for the phone to be handed in. 7 INT. LIVING ROOM. HOME. LONDON AFTEROON Photographs of the sons growing up with Alex the father. Achievements, awards and certificates are plenty for the younger son Ryan, few for the older son Michael. Zooming into the photographs of the graduation ceremony from university, Michael is on stage with the DEAN. The next photograph is Ryan graduating the same year as Michael. 8 EXT. PARK. GRADUATION CEREMONY MIDDAY Ryan gets off stage. His friends crowd around him cheering him on and lifting him up, throwing him in the air. FRIENDS (shouting) Yeah man! You did it! Youngest lad to graduate! Good on you man. Mate, great job. You deserve it! Michael is behind the cheering crowd glaring with jealousy. Alex enters and friends put Ryan down. Alex kisses his sons on the forehead. 9 INT. LAW OFFICE. DAY Well done, my boys. Today. In the meeting room, Alex is at the head of the table, Ryan sits on the left and Michael sits on the right side. The rest of the PARTNERS are present at the table. They discuss matters to do with

cases and organizational structure of the firm. Michael sits and listens attentively. Ryan is preoccupied on his phone. The meeting ends and people exit the room. 10 INT. OFFICE Michael rushes off to complete his tasks as we follow Ryan casually walking back to his desk. As Ryan continues to walk past Michael s desk, Michael is already typing with full concentration. 11 INT. S DESK -AFTERNOON Ryan is bored out of his mind. He attempts to work. He sighs and slouches on the chair. Picks up a magazine, flicks through the pages, and throws it aside. Tries to balance his pen on his mug that has a coffee bean on it. A sudden thought runs through his mind, which he could go out to grab some coffee. Ryan slips his phone from his desk into his back pocket and exits. 12 EXT. CROWDED STREETS. Ryan walks through the crowded streets, with on-going traffic on his left. 13 INT. COFFEE SHOP. He enters a coffee shop and queues for a drink. He gets a message from his phone and picks it up. It s just an email from the company related to work. He rolls his eyes and place the phone back. Looks up and to his surprise sees someone has cut the line. Annoyed he places his hands on the man s shoulder and spins him around. (annoyed) Excuse me, did you not see- Ryan realizes it s his old high school friend BARRETT. Ry? Mate! Andy? Wha Mate look at you! Look at your fancy suit! You look good man! (chuckles) Thanks mate. You re not so bad yourself. Liking the piercings. Hah, thanks. Oh uh sorry for cutting in there, saw you earlier but couldn t resist messing with ya. Andrew and Ryan are next in line to order. BARISTA Hi, what can I getcha?

Ryan nudges Andrew to order first. Hey love, you alright? One Americano please. Andrew reaches his hands for his pocket. Ryan stops him. Ryan takes out his card. And one cappuccino, paying together. (unsure) Ry- Andrew notices Ryan s cheeky reassuring smile. Andrew smiles back. 14 EXT. PARK. Andrew and Ryan catching up with each other. And that s why mate, you gotta come with me man. Have an adventure! Stuck at the desk for the rest of your life? I don t even know how you deal with it. Yeah, but you gotta understand mate, my Dad he built this company from scratch. Since Mum s gone, he s done so much for us. Ryan looks to the distance with distaste. Well he s got your older bruv hasn t he? Look, here s my number. Gimme a call if you change your mind. It s been good catching up with ya man. Andrew leaves. Ryan stares at the number he s been given. 15 INT. S DESK. OFFICE. Ryan is holding some file cases, next to him is a pile of paper work he needs to go through. Ryan picks up his pen, makes a few scribbles. He stares at the paper until the words become unreadable. ASSOCIATE LAWYER Hey Ryan, could you come help me take a look at this? I need your expertise! Ryan leaves his desk a little stunned. 16 INT. ASSOCIATE LAWYER S OFFICE.

Yeah, just there. ASSOCIATE LAWYER Ah yes, of course. Thank you for your help Ryan zones out, struggling to focus and break free from boredom. 17 INT. DINING ROOM. HOME. Alex, Michael and Ryan are sitting on the dining table eating dinner. Good job today, it s been a while since we ve had dinner together like this. Yeah Dad, it s real nice. I ve been thinking. Yes son? Maybe it s time for something different. Maybe, what I need is a breath of fresh air. I met an old friend today and he asked if I could come with him to do some travelling. Oh really? That sounds like a good idea. Why don t you take a break then! And enjoy yourself! Dad I meant turn a new leaf. I mean I m leaving the company. (disapprovingly) I m sorry? Oh but son, are you sure about this? I remember the day of graduation all you talked about and could think about was doing Mum proud with starting up a firm of your own. Where are you going to- Stop. I don t want to hear this. What I need is some self-discovery, something new. (in his thoughts)

What, the pressure of work life ain t cut out for you? I ll be needing money. Are you sure you even thought this through? How much money are you even intending to take? I want my share. What! You little (raising his hand to Michael) Son I m sorry to hear this. But this is your life, I will give you your share. Michael storms off. 18 EXT. TRAIN STATION MIDDAY (slams his fists to the table and stands up) Are you serious? Dad, how can you- I have decided. Ryan looks at his phone. The previous messages seen was: 09:33 Where are you? 09:35 By the ticket machine Ryan sees Andrew up ahead and Andrew waves. 19 EXT./INT. CITY OF AMSTERDAM AFTERNOON Flash of different sights to see, places to go, cafes visited, pictures taken, likes on facebook. End of the day, Ryan and Andrew collapse on their hotel beds laughing. 20 EXT./INT. WEED CAFES. GAMBLING PLACES. RED LIGHT DISTRICT - NIGHT Ryan and Andrew eat weed brownies, whilst enjoying coffee. Andrew pops extra weed out and gives Ryan a wink. Ryan rejects the offer. Soon Andrew lures Ryan into gambling places but Ryan is not interested. He tries once, wins, but doesn t want to try again. Andrew ends up losing a lot of money. They arrive at the red light district. Ryan seems self-controlled and Andrew eye-balls all the women. Andrew and Ryan get drinks. A show begins and Ryan is tempted to lose his control. Andrew pays for a lap dance. Ryan cannot help but desire. He hands over cash and gets a lap dance. A couple more drinks, lights throb and vision gets blurry. Then blackout.

21 INT. WOMAN S BEDROOM EARLY MORNING Ryan is sleeping. In his dream he hears a car crash and his Mother scream. He wakes up sweating. A woman is lying next to him still asleep. He gets changed and walks out the door. 22 INT. HOTEL MORNING Ryan opens door to the hotel room, Andrew is on his phone trying to call him. Andrew stops the call and gives Ryan a cheeky look. 23 INT. RED LIGHT DISTRICT NIGHT You know what s coming. Flashing red lights, women dancing, and drinks are slammed across the table. Women approach Ryan and Andrew. Later in the evening, Ryan and Andrew leave drunk. 24 EXT. STREETS OF RED LIGHT DISTRICT NIGHT Gang of muggers follow close behind. They then attack and hit Andrew and Ryan. Andrew being more sober got scared and manages to run away. Ryan gets beaten and his possessions stolen. 25 EXT. STREETS OF AMSTERDAM DAY/NIGHT Ryan wakes up feeling awful. He tries to find money, his phone, anything, but there is nothing. He roams around the streets lost. People stare at him in disgust. He gets cold at night, begs in the morning. He has haunting memories of hearing a car crash and his mother screaming. 26 EXT. AMSTERDAM TRAIN STATION - DAY Ryan stumbles outside the train station begging. He sees half a slice of bread on the floor and a pigeon next to it. Ryan tries to take the bread to eat, but the bird snatches it and tries to fly off with it. Angered, Ryan chases the bird in pursuit until he corners it and it flies away with the bread. Ryan starts to tear up in anger, disappointment and shame. When he opens his teary eyes he sees money on the floor. Shocked he picks it up. It is 215 euros. Ryan walks to the station and checks the price for the ticket. It is exactly 215 euros! He takes the train home. 27 INT. TRAIN BACK TO LONDON DAY Ryan daydreams, thinking that he would apologize to his Father and how he would work as a janitor or a low paying job under his company. 28 INT. TRAIN STATION AFTERNOON Ryan comes out of the station gates, to his surprise he sees his Father. Shocked and not knowing what to do, he stood there. Alex runs to embrace his son. Dad I- I m sorry I left. It was my carelessness that-

29 EXT. CAR ON ROAD Hush, no it s alright my son. It s alright my son. You re safe now. Alex drives his son Ryan back home. Ryan is sleeping from exhaustion. 30 INT. HOME LATE AFTERNOON Ryan has finished showering and his Dad is helping him to patch his wounds. Dad finishes treating Ryan s wounds and they both smile warmly. Suddenly Alex has an idea and rushes off quickly. He clears his throat and Ryan turns around to see his Dad holding a very expensive suit. Ryan is shocked. Ryan starts to cry into his father s arms. 31 INT. LIFT. LAW OFFICE EVENING Come back with me son. Alex and Ryan are standing in the lift and the doors open. They are greeted by the staff workers with confetti, champagne and a welcome back banner. Ryan walks in stunned in disbelief. The employees, associate lawyers pat him on the back, pour him a glass of wine. Michael stands behind the cheer and celebration in anger and sulks off to the balcony. Alex notices and concerned follows Michael out to the balcony. 32 EXT. BALCONY. LAW OFFFICE EVENING Michael vents his frustrations in mumbles. He kicks one of the chairs. Son? What s wrong? (glares) Dad no, what is wrong with you? All these years, I ve been the one slaving away, all this time, all this effort I ve always tried to make you happy. Yet you give that bloody son of yours your most prized suit when the selfish git took our money and recklessly lost it all. Don t you think I deserve that suit?! (panting) My son, don t for one second doubt the love that I have for you. You are always with me, and all that I have is yours. But we must celebrate and be joyful! This brother of yours was dead and is alive again. Alex turns to leave. Before he enter back into the office, he gives Michael one last hopeful look. Michael makes a move, but the audience is left wondering what Michael would choose to do.
