GWRRA CHAPTER K NEWSLETTER Editor: Claire Aylward September Newsletter SEPTEMBER GATHERING AND MORE Our September meeting opened with the Pledge of Allegience. Since our meeting landed on the date of September 11, 2012 we had the group bow our heads in a moment of silence in respect to all those people we lost on that terrible day here in the United States. As GWRRA members are coming into the meeting room, on the screen is a video of an old TV show ALF because ALF us our humorous MASCOT. To start the evening off with FUN & LAUGHS. During dinner we ran a slide show of many of the great rides we enjoyed the past weeks together and also with other chapters around the region. We had two new members join us at this September meeting, we welcome Robert Miller and Mike Romano. We wished a Happy Birthday to Bill Reichling, Larry Unger and Wendy Blum. We had a great presentation from Bill Reichling who gave us the highlights of a What you Should Know about Motorcycle Insurance a presentation from a Lawyer ( at Bi-State ) who gave us a seminar on great tips to cover yourself when setting up your mc insurance policy. Great job Bill, we all thank you. Our Rider Educator Rob Bellassai, gave a very in-depth class on Motorcycle Cornering now we have the tools and knowledge on how to approach all those curves on those twisty roads. If you missed this presentation you definitely missed a great opportunity. We thank you Rob you did a great job as always. Rob said he will be concentrating on braking next meeting. In October. Be sure and do not miss this meeting.. MEC Claire Aylward presented a Chapter K Appreciation Certificate to Michael Lauro who supported Chapter K and took the time out of his schedule to join Richie and Claire Aylward on a trip upstate to Escort the remains of Ray Van Wagner to his gravesite. Page 2 GWRRA CHAPTER K NEWSLETTER SEPTEMBER GATHERING & MORE - Continued from page 1 The trip up to Newbergh, NY to meet-up with the other escorts and then together we all rode on a very extensive ride through the backroads to the Cemetery in Livington, NY (Hudson ). We thought that Michael was very gracious to accompany us. CD Richie Aylward discussed the upcoming events like the Ride Out up in Lake George, and we were pleasantly surprised that quite a few members were able to join us. Richie also announced that another Road Captain course was being held on Saturday, September 29 and he was looking for a headcount so that we could prepare accordingly. The details will follow in an email as soon as time and place have been decided on. On September 23rd many of our members will be up in Lake George for the Ride-Out, we do have a ride to Gossman s Dock in Montauk, does anyone who is NOT planning on going to the Ride Out want to lead and organize that ride? Let CD Richie Aylward know. On September 30th the ride that Sunday is to the Rhinebeck Aerodome up in Rhinebeck, NY. We are planning for that ride. We are having our Holiday Party at the Moose Lodge again this year, as soon as we have a date we will get a email out. It is usually the first or second week of December. Bob and Cathy Turner ran the 50/50 raffle and our new member Mike Romano won, the chapter proceeds were $45.00. Richie gave free yellow raffle tickets to all members wearing their vests or garments with GWRRA and / or Chapter K. Rocknbob (Robert Ingenito) won the $5.00 raffle prize. Page 4 GWRRA CHAPTER K NEWSLETTER 2012 Ride-Out in Lake George Well GWRRA up in the Country Cottages in Diamond Point, Lake George, NY know there is a Chapter K in New York. CD s Richie and Claire Aylward were really surprised when we started getting the reservations coming in for this event. We had thirteen in all from our chapter and we had a really fun time. We started on Thursday and met up with Gary and Susan as we arrived around dinner time, so naturally we went to dinner. The four of us were looking for a nice place for the Friday night dinner gathering with the rest of the group as they were arriving throughout the day on Friday. Gary had a place he thought maybe pretty good and it was close to the host hotel Country Cottages and Motel. Turned out to be a great choice because the restaurant was very happy to seat all 14-16 of us and the food was good and really lots of it. 14-16 people hmmmn! CD Richie and Claire invited the Region Trainers Eileen and Tim Guile and their friend, Cliff to come and meet Chapter K. I guess they were glad they weren t going to be tested on all the new names. Richie and Claire had Rocknbob (Robert Ingenito) and Linda and Bill Reichling, who have joined us several times and now GW is recognizing them. We introduced Jaime Alston and his friend Linda Torres and Gary Neppell and Susan Dithridge, Mike Lauro and Phil Genova. Dinner Friday night at the RainTree Restaurant on Rt 9N in Diamond Point was very good and the host and hostess were very friendly. We were served timely and were able to finish our dinner and get to the Ice Cream Social event, which is the opening of the weekends festivities. At this event we met up with our new member Ray Romano and his fiancé, Rebecca. Everyone had a great time meeting old and new friends. On Saturday our group picked the #1 tour ride to do with the other GWRRA members. There were 3 tours in all. We rode from around 10:30am to about 3PM with several breaks in between. The scenery was breathtaking. We had quite a few twisty mountain roads to practice our cornering skills on, so it was a full day. All the tours ended up at the Host hotel the Country Cottages and Motel where a big Barbeque was on the fire and a bonfire for warmth. For a little extra entertainment they had a thirteen year old boy named Matthew Boyce who won the The Lake George Elvis Festival Winner contest who gyrated and sang for the group. Now remember this is a fundraiser for the Ride for Kids and all proceeds went to the fundraiser Pediatric Brain Tumors all food etc were donated. There were tables full of baskets donated from the local businesses and everyone was bidding on the baskets, etc.. They sold new donated knitted scarfs and wood craft. They also had a 50/50. Your CD Richie someone must like him because he won the 50/50 of $240.00. Chapter K revelers could be heard all through the mountains as our Chapter K group cheered. And cheered more as CD Richie won a portable BBQ grill and a box full of Halloween goodies. This is the second time Richie won 50/50 in the last couple of years at a GWRRA event. We heard someone say next year if Richie is here, no 50/50 raffle LOL. Our Jaime Alston and Linda Torres won a First Gear jacket and Rocknbob won a lot of Ride For Kids tee shirts which he passed around to our group, Contin-

GWRRA CHAPTER K NEWSLETTER Page 5 2012 Ride Out Lake George continued from page 4 All good fun and everyone was having a fun time and lots of laughs. We hope our Chapter K had a good time because their Chapter Director Richie and Claire loved sharing them with everyone. After all the desserts were served and no one could move for all the food they ate, our group gathered at our cabin that Richie and Claire shared with Bill and Linda. Now on Sunday morning Ray and Rebecca were the early birds as they got up at 5:45 am and drove to Floyd Bennett Airport to see the 90+ Balloon Show The balloons were beautiful. We have them to thank as they took pictures of all those balloons being released into the air. Nice, really nice. Sunday morning we all met together and went to a GWRRA breakfast held at the Lone Wolf restaurant where they put most of GWRRA members on one side of the restaurant so everyone could be together. Again everyone ate so much we were stuffed and satisfied all the way home. Most of our group traveling together enjoyed some beautiful scenic routes on the way home on back roads and then jumped onto the Hutchinson Pkwy, Throngs Neck Bridge and Clearview Expwy to 495. From the emails and pictures I would say this was a fun event. Many of us booked our rooms again at the Country Cottages and most were already full for 2013 so they put their names on a list and hopefully there will be some cancellations and we will all be together next year. There are plenty of hotels, vacancies are not a problem, we just like to be able to relax after a long day and just hang together. We are looking forward to next year. We want to thank the Portes Family for all their hard work putting this together and all the Chapter N volunteers who made this a wonderful weekend. Thanks you all for a really great time.

August 26, North Shore Ride Richie Aylward planned and lead the North Shore Ride throughout the back roads of the Township of Huntington and the Township of Oyster Bay on the north shore. Our Rocknbob rode sweep and kept us in line. We had a nice group as we drove the twisty roads at a slow steady pace. We had seven bikes and eight riders. We stopped first at Target Rock, in Lloyd Neck as there is an open outdoor restroom. The next stop was at Theodore Roosevelt House in Cove Neck Oyster Bay, NY We could not go into the main house as it is under renovation but we were able to stop in the museum / gift shop where we joked with the people manning the gift shop. When we walked in with all our motorcycle gear, the guy at the counter said jokingly Sturgis is in that direction. CD Richie asked him to repeat that which direction is Mount Rushmore everyone laughed and took it in good spirits. The next stop was to be lunch and then right next to the restaurant was Billy Joels Motorcycle shop which we planned on visiting and it was open on Sundays. Once the guys saw Billy s shop no one was hungary. LOL After everyone enjoyed all the different motorcycles in the shop off to lunch we went. There is a little restaurant in Oyster Bay called the Sweet Tomato which had all kinds of soups, salads, wraps and egg specialties. There was also across the street a very well known since the seventies Bonanza Stand which served besides hot dogs on a bun, fries, sausage and meatball heros, etc. So there was something for everyone. After lunch we rode through Bayville and Seacliff, which had a few very tough winding roads that we took very carefully for our newbie riders. It was a full day, nice job Richie and Rocknbob, thanks for a great ride.

Shinnecock Powwow Ride September 1, 2012 The day was sunny and bright and all were really to roll. Our lead Road Captain Rocknbob was leading us to the Shinnecock Nation Powwow out in Southampton, Long Island, NY. CD Richie was our sweep this day. We had five on bikes, two on a trike and two in a car heading east. The ride was beautiful, but in Riverhead we hit a lot of stop and go traffic and it was getting a bit warm in all our riding gear. Rocknbob started to feel over whelmed with heat so he pulled the group into a gas station. Well the outcome was not too great as Bob Turner kept wet towels on Bob to help cool him off. Rocknbob said he had chest pains. Bob Turner called for an ambulance and most of us followed and went to the Peconic Medical Center. Turns our Rocknbob was having a heart attack. From the medical center he was transferred to Stonybrook Hospital for additional treatment. By the end of the day Rocknbob was resting comfortably and doing better. And if you were at the Ride-Out you saw he was having a wonderful time. Now we heard from Hal and Karen who were on their first ride with us on their trike and they went ahead to the Powwow and took a beautiful picture but we could not rotate the picture properly. Here is a picture of the group gathering for the pre-ride meeting that day. Escort Ray VanWagner remains to Cemetery in Livingston Ray VanWagner a former NY Assistant Director and a Former Chapter Director for Chapter L in upstate New York. Since Ray loved motorcycling and shared his family time with GWRRA members it seemed only fitting to have a motorcycle escort to his final resting place. This took place on a Thursday when most of us are at work so it was understandable that this was not an easy task. Richie and Claire were able to rework their work schedule to join the escort and Michael Lauro was also available and volunteered to join us. As it turned out the ride up to Orange County Choppers in Newburgh, NY was about 2-3 hours. When everyone had arrived and the Van Wagner family had joined us we rode together through the back roads to the Cemetery in Livingston, NY (Hudson) a fairly long ride, a little over an hour. At the Cemetery the family spoke about Ray Van Wagner. It was a very sad but friendly atmosphere. Michael rode back to the island with Richie and Claire, Michael is just recently back on his motorcycle after a long convalescence from knee and back problems. We are very proud of Michael as he is a warm human being and an asset to the group.

Page 8 GWRRA CHAPTER K NEWSLETTER Hampton Bays Ride September 9, 2012 Chapter K was joined by friends from the past on this ride as we all gathered together to ride out to Sunday on the Bays restaurant to visit together and enjoy the marine scenery as we enjoyed our lunch. Ed Thomas organized and lead this ride and RE Rob Bellassai was our sweep. We had a larger group this day with fourteen riders and twelve bikes and Rocknbob joined us in his car. It was a nice ride out to the Hamptons, mostly highway and not much traffic. At the restaurant two more riders joined us. Lunch and conversation was great. After lunch some of the riders went on to an extended ride through some of the backroads of Southhampton as we rode past many beautiful mansions and gardens. Nice ride. We thank Ed Thomas for all his planning for this ride and Rob Bellassai for watching our backs, nice job.

GWRRA CHAPTER K NEWSLETTER Page 9 North Fork Backroads Slow Dance Ride We all on Long Island know that the island is shaped like a fish tail on the east end. The last few rides were on the South Fork of the Tail now today we were heading to the North Fork of the tail. Bill and Linda Reichling organized this ride. The Road Captains; Bill lead the ride and Rob Bellassai was the sweep. Everyone met up at exit 56 at 9:30 am for our pre-ride meeting and kickstands were up at 10:00am. As we gathered we were thirteen riders and ten bikes. Bill took us on the expressway to exit 65 and then we headed south on Bellport Avenue and then north on to backroads cruising along at a nice steady pace. We were heading to our lunch spot, Hellenic Snack Bar and Restaurant (with Greek specialties) in East Marion, NY. The weather was cool but clear and it was good to be alive, we with cb s heard over the intercom, as we passed over a beautiful waterway. The restaurant was prepared for us and we all enjoyed our lunch and kidded each other. As Linda was here so we had lots of pictures being taken. After lunch most of the group headed for Riverhead to have dessert at the homemade Snow Flake Ice Cream store. Susan said Yum Pumpkin Ice Cream. It was a beautiful day and a great ride. We want to thank Bill and Linda for organizing and leading the ride and Rob Bellassai for keeping us in line as our sweep. We have to watch that cornering: practice, practice, practice. LOL
