1. Regional context A major cluster in a dynamic, attractive urban region EPFL : ca 9 900 students UNIL : ca 13 600 students 4 km and 15 minutes by public transportation from the city center of Lausanne (137 500 inhabitants), and less than 2 km from the center of Renens (20 000 inhabitants) in the very center of the Lausanne- Morges urban region : 27 cities, 278 000 inhabitants and 160 000 employees A decade of strong demographic trend. Hence Lausanne-Morges' regional projection for 2030 in the compact zone : +69 000 inhabitants +43 000 employees

The campus in the local context A campus planned in the 70 s outside of the city, with two different paradigm (park vs evolving grid) Diversification of land use begins in the 90 s Especially in the north-west part of the site : accommodations for students, shopping and service mall, restaurants Plus iconic buildings (SwissTech ) A campus still enclosed in itself, with a strong «inward», but urban, development pattern PAC 229

Sectoral planning SDOL (masterplan of the West of Lausanne : 8 communities) Re-thinking the economic transformation and giving a new urban framework and a new identity to a territory fragmented by infrastructures, heterogeneous and dispersed UNIL and EPFL Campus : a strategic site of the SDOL Landscape / Treating the whole campus like a valuable green space, including the south part of the avenue du Tir Fédéral and Route Suisse. Urban development / Coordinating the campus with the surrounding urban development (Chavannes Sud Est / les Cedres) Infrastructure and public spaces / Upgrading the public transport and keeping good access to the site. Rethinking the public spaces around the Metro station (M1) Transforming the road RC1 into a more urban avenue SDOL : Urban and Landscape Map Upgrading the RC 1
