THE TOURISM CONFUCIUS INSTITUTE The Tourism Confucius Institute (TCI) was established on the Gold Coast campus of Griffith University under an agreement between Griffith University in Australia and The Office of Chinese Language Council International (HanBan) in China, in partnership with the China University of Mining and Technology (CUMT), in Xuzhou, China. The TCI is the first and only Confucius Institute with an emphasis on tourism. In addition to promoting the learning of the Chinese language and culture at Griffith University and in the broader community, the TCI seeks to build and deepen links and collaborative opportunities between China and Australia in the field of tourism.

DIRECTOR S MESSAGE Seeking to build and deepen links and collaborative opportunities between China and Australia in the field of tourism. Director s message The Tourism Confucius Institute (TCI) at Griffith University commenced its core activities only at the end of 2012, but has within a short space of time established itself as a significant institute at the Gold Coast dedicated to the teaching and promotion of Chinese language and culture that focuses on tourism. TCI is a member of Queensland Tourism Industry Council. Our tourism focused Chinese language and culture courses are well known to industry and government at the Gold Coast. Equally known are TCI s school and community outreach culture programs. TCI organizes Chinese musical performances and other cultural events at local schools and community centres, including libraries and retirement homes. We welcome you and your family to our events, many of which are free as part of TCI s outreach programs. You are invited to visit our website (http://www.griffith.edu.au/tourism confucius institute), which has links to social media like YouTube that has videos on some of our activities. CHINA IN MY EYES The exhibition was a powerful, visual reminder of Colin s role as a pioneer in the Sino Australia relationship. ~Professor Ian O Connor China in My Eyes Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate, the Consul General of the People s Republic of China in Brisbane, Dr Zhao Yongchen, Griffith staff, students and alumni were among more than 100 guests at the launch of the "China in My Eyes" exhibition at the Gold Coast campus on Tuesday 18 February 2014. The exhibition featured a diverse range of photographs taken by Professor Colin Mackerras spanning over 50 years of living and working in China. Professor Colin Mackerras Honorary Director, The Tourism Confucius Institute Vice Chancellor Professor Ian O Connor said the exhibition was a powerful, visual reminder of Colin s role as a pioneer in the Sino Australia relationship. This modern day Marco Polo first developed a strong feeling and sympathy for the Chinese people when he was appointed to teach at the Beijing Institute of Foreign Languages in 1964, he said. In the planning for the establishment of Brisbane s second university in the early 1970s, Griffith s founders decided that a quarter of the initial courses at the university should be in Asian Studies. Colin was one of the first people approached to become Foundation Professor in Modern Asia Studies and he took up this position in 1974. For over five decades, Colin has provided outstanding leadership to generations of academic staff, has been an inspiration to legions of students and has undertaken cutting edge research from the role of ethnicity in China to the evolving dynamics of the relationship between Australia and China. "China in My Eyes" revealed Professor Mackerras vision of disseminating knowledge about China. The Tourism Confucius Institute at Griffith University 13
