Ship and marine technology Guidelines for the installation of ship communication networks for shipboard equipment and systems, developed by the study group for shipboard LANs, receives ISO green light Various networks are being introduced to ships with the blistering pace of information technology (IT) progress worldwide. However, in Japan, shipboard equipment is manufactured by many different specialist makers. As such, they are operated in many different networks. There are many hurdles with consolidating networks. Despite this fact, shipowners, shipbuilders and other parties have demanded that shipboard information be integrated, and that both the number of cables and the work needed for building networks be reduced. In 2005, the Japan Ship Machinery and Equipment Association (JSMEA) established a study group for onboard local area networks (LANs). Led by Professor Emeritus Takeo Koyama of the University of Tokyo, the study group has made a variety of efforts in the past seven years or so, such as with the idea of integrating information by connecting to a single network devices of various functions installed at different onboard locations. In testing, the group used the different products manufactured by member companies. The study group also conducted tests at Marintec China 2009 and Sea Japan 2010, in which it participated. At Bari-Ship 2011, the group held exhibitions and seminars. Ship and marine technology Guidelines for the installation of ship communication networks for shipboard equipment and systems were developed from discussions and verification tests by the study group for onboard LANs, of which 38 JSMEA-affiliated companies are members. In 2010, the JSMEA campaigned to make the guidelines a Japan-proposed international standard in partnership with the Japan Ship Technology Research Association (JSTRA). A decision was made recently to develop the guidelines into the international standard ISO16425. The JSMEA hopes the ISO16425 international standard will help the Japanese ship machinery and equipment industry enhance its global competitiveness and gain more momentum once it becomes widely accepted in the industry.
