Colin Reedman 24 December 1941-20 June 2017 Aero modelling in South Australia has lost one of the stalwarts of our hobby with the passing of Colin George Reedman on 20 June 2017, a er a short fight with a very aggressive cancer. Colin was a Licensed Aircra Maintenance Engineer who completed his appren ceship with De Havilland Australia in Sydney. During his career, he worked both in Australia and Papua New Guinea and finally at Parafield Airport. He was qualified to work on a wide range of aircra but had specialised on those with wood and fabric construc on. His knowledge of De Havilland aircra was legendary - he could quote all the model numbers and tell you all about a par cular aeroplane without missing a breath. We are not exactly sure when he began aero modelling but he was very ac ve during his me in PNG, during the 1970s, especially when he lived and worked in Lae. Colin first became a member of Constella on Model Flying Club in 1982 and at the me of his death was the club Vice President. Over the years, he taught many new members to fly R/C models and would gladly offer advice to others on a wide range of issues. In addi on, Colin was an enthusias c scale aircra modeller and President of the Scale Aircra Society of South Australia where again he used his knowledge and exper se to help others. At the Society's last mee ng its members voted to rename the annual De Havilland day, held at the Constella on field, as 'The Colin Reedman De Havilland day' and to ins tute a trophy in his honour. Colin is survived by his wife Margaret to whom we extend our deepest condolences and sympathies. We should remember all his achievements during his long life rather than the manner of his passing. Col was a great friend with a generous nature and will be missed by all who knew him. 3
NOARLUNGA MODEL AEROSPORT I t has been an excellent May and June for flying in the southern suburbs with sensa onal blocks of calm days and fine weather. The club has had several recent events. AGM Jason Tank was elected Vice President, Troy Davis Secretary & CFI, Ted Blackwell Safety Officer with commi ee of Neil Tank, Paul Kumela, Ma hew Wye, Malcolm Bartle & Malcolm Neale. President Greg Badger and Treasurer Bre Oakley have another year to run on their terms. Thank you to other members looking a er purchasing, bbqs, drinks, field maintenance, newsle er etc. Life Member - Paul Kumela was also nominated and presented with Life Membership a er 35 years. Paul accepted the award most graciously and it was obvious it meant a great deal to him, congratula ons Come and Try Day On 21 st May a come and try day was run under great condi ons. The day exceeded all expecta ons. Public paid for a flight with a gold coin dona on. They were first Come and Try Day Simulator in ac on run through the clubs simulator on a big screen (thanks Gary) Four trainers and buddy boxes were on the go all day with instructors Troy, Peter, Greg, Sean & Dennis amassing a huge number of flights with poten al pilots ranging from young kids to veterans. The day was also a fund raiser for the Jacobsen s. A great BBQ was provided and we hope to see new members in the near future. The day also showed a great deal of public support for our ac vi es in the area Pete Reade s Vanquish Pylon World Champs At me of wri ng the Pylon Racing Jacobsen s will be in Sweden flying the flag for Australia/SA and Noarlunga in the World Pylon Champs. Shaun did a fantas c job making the team having only competed in 2 of the 3 qualifying events. 4
Brother Jarred is his official caller and I guess that makes old fella Tom, Team Manager and Mechanic (probably financier as well) We all know Tom would love to be on the s cks. The club did a fantas c job raising considerable dona ons to assist these speed freaks. SA Precision Aeroba cs the club made the field available on Saturday 17 th June for the first SAPA comp ever held at Noarlunga, 11 pilots a ended and a lot of club members dropped in to have a look. In Sportsman club member Peter Reade came out on top and gained his 2 nd promo on point from his first 2 events. Sean Reade also finished a credible 3 rd out of 5 pilots in a very non pa ern 50cc SAPA visit SBach, showing just what can be achieved, look out if he gets a full on Precision Aircra. It was so good to have 9 of these pilots a ending from other clubs, many who had ever flown at our field. All a endees were in admiraon and full of compliments of the facili es and field presentaon. Float Flying - Trevor Tomse and his crew have been travelling many miles a ending float flying events in Mt Gambier, Colac and Barmera. Trevor is a regular feature at these events with numerous planes, in par c- ular the Tri motor Weekend Busy pits. Come and Try day Special and Beaver with its new 40cc twin. Great to see new members ge ng into this fantas c facet of our hobby. The Wednesday midweek flyers have been enjoying good numbers, good weather and some great flying although some of us suspect the day is becoming more about the Banquet quality lunches rather than the flying. 5

CONSTELLATION MODEL FLYING CLUB T he Scale Day held on June 18, 2017 got off to a slow start with very poor visibility, due to fog and mist, however, it slowly li ed and flying began about 10 am. It was very well supported with good a endance at the event and included some visitors from other clubs. There was a wide range of aeroplane types on display and flown in the near perfect condi ons. Our new club president, Trevor Pearce, flew a model of a 1912 Blackburn type D Monoplane which seemed to just float around the sky. Terry Cosh had his Hawker Hurricane that was flown superbly by Mike Savil and which looked and sounded magnificent in the air. Kurt Meyer brought his new Mitsubishi Zero for sta c display only, as it is not quite 7
ready to fly. The surface finish is on his model of a very high standard, with outstanding scale de- 8
tail and an absolute work of art. Of the biplanes, there were two each of the DH82a Tiger Moth and the Stampe SV4 and a Cur ss P6E. An electric powered Fokker DR1, from a Flair kit also flew very well. There were many monoplanes that included a Cap 10, Zero, O er, and Bird Dog. A er the barbeque lunch flying con nued un l early a ernoon. 9

CONSTELLATION MODEL FLYING CLUB Retro Day 4 June 2017, by Don Howie. T his event, held on 4 June 2017, was first introduced to show the development of radio control flying, that dates to the first R/C event ever held at the U.S. Na onals in 1937. This was won by Chet Lanzo with his 9-foot span R/C S ck model. The following years were dominated by the Good brothers and I met Walter Good, who designed the famous single channel Rudderbug Rod Spurrier-Lancer model in 1949, at the world R/ C glider championships, at Waikerie in 1985. On the 4 June this year, Rod Spurrier was flying a 72-inch span Lancer model, which was first ki ed by the New Cyclone Aircra Company, in the U.S.A. in 1938. It was based on the sleek racer aircra of that period and was designed by Ches- Lancer in flight 12

Mike Savil - Ebenezer nese silk. It has had many owners and Rod has built a new from cowling and fi ed a 480 Dualsky electric motor, driving a 9 x 4 1/2inch electric propeller, with power from a 3 cell lipo ba ery. It is a nice, easy to fly old me model. Mike Savil builds a variety of old mer aircra and his 20-inch span, all sheet Ebenezer is a popular free flight model worldwide. Published in Aeromodeller Magazine, in 1958 and was designed by Bert Streigler, from the U.S.A. Mike s model has a Cox.020 Peewee glow engine fi ed. Also flown by Mike was his Astro Hog designed and published by Fred Dunne in 1956, and was the first low wing mul -channel aircra originally flown with a reed radio. The original used a K & B 35 control line stunt glow engine fi ed with a Bramco thro le. Mikes model has an O.S. 50 SX glow fi ed, which gives it much more performance than the original, which carried heavy radio equipment. Ken Whenham had a design from the 1970s, a Kaos 40, designed and first ki ed by Joe Bridi Enterprises. His early design from the late 1960s was the Sun Fli model that was flown at Constella on during the 1970s. Ken s model has an O.S. 50 SX glow engine giving it much greater performance than the original, and is covered in Solarfilm. (note the spelling of the name in the photograph.) Maris Dislers is a very well-known South Australian control line flyer, who wrote, with his late brother, a control line feature in Airborne Magazine. He is now a contributor to Airborne 14
Mike Savil - Astro Hog tes ng smaller model engines (mainly diesels) and is regarded as the best in the world. He flew a V/Mar Bird Dog designed for 4 channels and electric power. A built-up tailplane was made to reduce tail weight and he has fi ed a PAW 80 diesel (0.8cc capacity). More dihedral was added and it has knock off wings. It has a single channel radio, opera ng rudder only and flies very well on low power with an 8x4 propeller. 15
