Welcome to Portland Fun Facts about Portland Portland has the smallest city park, Mill End Park, inside the city limits of any city in this country. It is 2.5 feet in diameter. It is illegal to pump your own gas in Oregon. The city was almost named Boston, but after a coin toss between Francis Pettygrove, a man from Portland, Maine and Asa Lovejoy, from Boston, Massachusetts, the city was named Portland. Travel Portland WHAT TO BRING & WHAT TO WEAR When packing, keep in mind the temperatures in Portland can be a little cool in May. The temperature ranges in the mid to high 40s at night, and mid to high 60s during the day. Drizzling rain is common so be sure to pack a rain jacket. Portland is a city that begs to be explored, and this year s agenda offers extra time for activities and scheduled tours. It features some exciting events to help us see the sights and enjoy the Pacific Northwest. WEDNESDAY is packed with an array of activities from tours to our opening social. Sightseers will enjoy Portland s intimate city, spectacular views, and breathtaking scenery. Attire should be comfortable with a light jacket and shoes appropriate for your outdoor adventures. Dress as a Portlander Wednesday evening, as you party with your DU family to kick off convention. Portland is dubbed the microbrew capital of the world, so bring your appetite as we indulge in the tastes of Portland with its tavern food and microbrews. Save room for dessert as it is a Portland must have. THURSDAY evening will have you in stitches. Before the entertainment begins, we ll have drinks and dinner at the Hilton Portland. Dress is casual and comfortable. FRIDAY begins with the Duck Hunters Breakfast, followed by an all-day business meeting including lunch and afternoon session. Join us for cocktail hour prior to heading out on the town for dinner with your friends. Dress for the day is business casual. To allow time to experience the great northwest, we ve adjusted the agenda for Saturday. The morning and afternoon are open for leisure activities or scheduled tours. The reception and gala are still SATURDAY evening as the featured event for the 76th Annual Convention. Ladies, feel free to dress to impress or wear your Sunday best. Gentlemen, a suit or sport coat and tie are appropriate. The complete convention program with more details is included later in this booklet. 2

Please attach the ribbon to your name badge so that repeat convention attendees can welcome you, offer assistance, and generally enhance your enjoyment of your convention activities. Welcome to the Ducks Unlimited convention family! REGISTRATION POLICY Please register promptly upon arrival at the Ducks Unlimited convention registration desk in the Ballroom Foyer of the Hilton Portland. Complimentary registration is provided for all children 14 years of age or younger, except for the closing gala on Saturday evening and/or participation in any of the tours. The fee for children attending the gala is $150 for the regular gala meal or $20 for chicken strips and fries. Children accompanying parents on any of the tours are required to pay the tour registration fee. ON THE SOCIAL AGENDA All tours depart from and return to the Hilton Portland Lobby (Broadway side). Meet in the Lobby 30 minutes prior to departure time to load buses. WEDNESDAY, MAY 22 Convention begins as we commence the activities for the week with DU s Homecoming A Taste of Portland. Come dressed as a Portlander and enjoy Portland s famous microbrews, catch up with old friends, and welcome newcomers while enjoying a relaxed evening with some great tavern food. A Taste of Portland will spill over into Hospitality Central, so remember to bring pins for trading. 4 THURSDAY, MAY 23 Over the years, convention has offered a variety of entertainers, and this year should prove to be among the favorites. Enjoy a Las Vegas type show with impersonations, comedy, and singing. It s an act that will amaze you. Drinks and dinner will be served at the Hilton Portland in the Grand Ballroom before the show.
FRIDAY, MAY 24 New Schedule Format Begin your busy day bright and early with the Duck Hunters Breakfast, a full breakfast buffet (6:30 a.m. 7:50 a.m.) in the Grand Ballroom. New to the schedule this year is a one-day business session. The business session will begin at 8:00 a.m. in the Schnitzer Concert Hall across the street from the Hilton. We ll break for lunch at the Hilton then reconvene at the Schnitzer Concert Hall to elect our new president and conclude the business session. Join us for cocktail hour in the Grand Ballroom before heading out with your friends at our traditional Night on the Town. To help in planning your night out, we ve incorporated a Where to Dine section (page 21), which highlights the most popular restaurants in the area. SATURDAY, MAY 25 New Schedule Format To help you enjoy all that the Pacific Northwest has to offer, we ve built in some free time in the schedule. Enjoy salmon fishing on the Willamette River, see the sites of Mt. St. Helens, or adventure on your own. As convention week winds down, the evening festivities culminate with the 76th Gala Reception from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the Pavilion Lobby followed by the 76th Annual Convention Gala in the Grand Ballroom. This fabulous evening features excellent food and a spirited live auction conducted by United Country Auction Services. Lastly, you ll be able to kick up your heels and dance the night away with 5 Guys Named Moe (in the Pavilion, second level) immediately following the conclusion of the auction. Ducks Unlimited s 76th Annual Convention will be a memorable week, and a full schedule of important meetings and enjoyable social events are planned to help celebrate the beginning of DU s next 75 years. But most of all, it is a city full of activities and an outdoor playground that beckons all who visit to explore! Your tour guide will share Portland s history and points of interest as you travel between the city s most beloved gardens. The world-class Lan Su Chinese Garden is one of Portland s most beautiful and tranquil attractions. The 40,000-square-foot walled garden, located in the heart of downtown, is the largest Suzhou-style garden outside of China. Wander along its secluded walkways and explore the elegant pavilions, ponds, and arched bridges. Five gardens comprise the 5.5-acre Japanese Garden, which emphasizes the essence of nature through plants, stone, and water. Lose yourself in the tranquility and beauty of these five gardens Strolling Pond, Tea, Sand and Stone, and the Natural and Flat Gardens. Near the Japanese Garden is the International Rose Test Garden, where you can make a brief stop to see the first buds of spring that have just begun to appear. Established in 1917, this is the oldest public rose test garden in the United States; when in bloom, it boasts over 10,000 roses and 600 varieties. 9
Gorge Tour 8:00 am 2:30 pm (Wednesday, Thursday) Julia Grieve & Travel Portland Experience the grandeur and history of the Columbia River Gorge as you travel along a section of the Old Columbia River Gorge Highway past enchanting waterfalls. Enjoy scenic Wahkeena Falls, a Yakima Indian word meaning most beautiful. Stop at the spectacular Multnomah Falls, which is the fourth highest in the United States, plummeting 620 feet. Explore the falls by taking a short walk up the paved trail to the Simon Benson Bridge or just stand at the base and revel in its splendor. The tour continues to Horsetail Falls, which is named for its characteristic form and plunges 176 feet. Other stops on this tour include Bonneville Dam and Fish Hatchery. The Bonneville Dam is the first of eight federal locks and dams on the Columbia and Snake Rivers. View the fish migration at the hatchery and visit the well known, 11-foot, 500-pound, 70-year-old white sturgeon named Herman. You will enjoy lunch on the banks of the Columbia River in the town of Hood River, where on a windy day you will see the colorful sails of windsurfers in this worldrenowned windsurfing capitol. 10
Mt. St. Helens Tour 7:45 am 4:00 pm (Wednesday, Saturday) On Sunday, May 18, 1980, Mt. St. Helens blasted into history and violently changed the landscape with an earthquake that measured 5.1 on the Richter scale. See how this massive eruption changed the mountain forever. You will see spectacular and unique views of the mountain, crater, and lava dome from Mt. St. Helens Visitor s Center and Johnston Ridge Observatory. The eruption of Mt. St. Helens was one of the most dramatic natural events in the history of the United States. Discover what Mt. St. Helens looked like before the blast, what happened during the eruption, and how wildlife and plant life have re-emerged from the ash. Hear stories from people who experienced the blast and those forever caught in its wake like Harry Truman who lived at the foot of the mountain on the shores of Spirit Lake and belligerently vowed never to leave. Remnants of the destruction remain three decades later and are a stark contrast to the natural beauty that has emerged. A box lunch will be provided. Spring Chinook Salmon Fishing 6:00 am Noon (Saturday) Bill Monroe Enjoy a one-of-a-kind fishing trip for springers, which are a special spring run of Chinook Salmon. You ll be fishing in the Willamette River, which runs through downtown Portland just six short blocks from our host hotel. The trip includes bait, tackle, salmon tag, license, and guide service. Each boat holds 4 to 6 people. For those lucky enough to catch these premium salmon, meat packing is available. 11

Day trips to the beach Astoria Astoria is situated near the mouth of the Columbia River, and was the first settlement west of the Mississippi River and the end of Lewis and Clark s expedition. The city was named after the American investor John Jacob Astor. His American Fur Company founded Fort Astoria at the site in 1811. A number of movies were filmed in Astoria, including The Goonies, Kindergarten Cop, Free Willy 2, and The Ring 2. Astoria also houses the Columbia River Maritime Museum, a remarkable museum that preserves the rich maritime heritage of the entire Columbia River region. Cannon Beach Cannon Beach is a popular vacation resort that extends for four miles along the Pacific Ocean. The city was named after a small, iron cannon that came ashore from a shipwrecked U.S. Navy schooner. Enjoy great boutiques and breathtaking views that encompass the Pacific Ocean and Haystack Rock, which rises 235 feet above miles of soft, sandy beach. The Kimber Custom II 1911 semiautomatic pistol offers custom hardwood grips featuring the DU logo and comes with its own hard case. The Fausti and Kimber are both marked as DU serial number 0002. 1989 1990 Browning A-500 Dinner Gun Offered by Ducks Unlimited and Browning in 1989 1990, this 12-gauge firearm is fitted with a 28" vent-rib barrel with interchangeable chokes. The stock and forearm are crafted with high-grade American walnut. The receiver is ornately engraved with artwork by Terry Redlin. Complete with premium-quality gun case. Donated by Roger Penrod Original Art by Art LaMay In this original watercolor painting, Art LaMay portrays a wood duck drake and hen flying by a sycamore tree. LaMay captures the character of his wildlife subjects by painting in an up-close-and-personal style. The piece is presented in a beautifully ornate frame with quadruple matting. Measures 37"x47" framed. Donated by Art LaMay Original Art by Angus Shortt This original oil painting depicts a beautiful scene of blue-winged teal. Angus Shortt was a well-known Winnipeg artist and painter of wildlife art. He was born in 1908 in Belfast, Ireland, and his family immigrated to Manitoba when he was a young child. Shortt was able to combine his passions as an ornithologist and artist by working as an illustrator and wildlife artist from 1939 to 1973 for Ducks Unlimited Canada at Oak Hammock Marsh. He specialized in painting ducks and geese and donated his artwork to many DU events. Image size is 22"x30". Framing donated by Jerry Brocato with Sporting World, Inc. 19
Pacific Northwest Decoy Collection These handmade and hand-painted decoys are crafted by Virginia decoy maker Bill Powell of False Cape Gunning Decoys. Each decoy has a handmade cork body with a wooden head, tail and keel. The Flyway Collection featuring 30 decoys, represents seven species of waterfowl native to the Pacific Northwest: the harlequin, old squaw, surf scoter, barrows goldeneye, bufflehead, common eider, and king eider.
