About the Appalachian Trail The Appalachian Trail (A.T.) is one of the longest continuously marked hiking footpaths in the world, measuring roughly 2,180 miles in length. Completed in 1937, the Trail goes through fourteen states along the crests and valleys of the Appalachian mountain range from the southern terminus at Springer Mountain, Georgia, to the Trail s northern terminus at Katahdin, Maine. Membership 03 The ATC has over 43,000 members from all 50 U.S. states and more than 15 other countries. These individuals are active, enjoy the outdoors, and are eco-friendly. They enjoy recreational activities such as hiking, camping and backpacking. They are adventurous and enjoy a challenge. They also see value in the protection and maintenance of the Appalachian Trail and it s surrounding community. Volunteers The ATC works with 31 Trail maintaining clubs to manage the A.T. Over 6,000 volunteers contribute more than 220,000 hours each year keeping the A.T. available for all to use. These individuals are active, passionate, and hard working. 07 Readership A.T. Journeys is the official magazine of the A.T. and the membership magazine of the ATC. The magazine provides equal representation of hikers, outdoor enthusiasts, the environment, the community and education in connection with the A.T. and the ATC. It is published six times a year, distributed to over 50,000 readers and is offered both in print & electronic version.
