Stage One of the Gold Coast Rapid Transit System is scheduled for delivery in 2014. $1.0billion in funding from all three levels of Government has been secured and in March 2010 six consortiums of bidders for the design, construction, operation and maintenance of the system were announced. This 13km dedicated light rail corridor will service the new Gold Coast University Hospital, Griffith University, Southport Medical Precinct and the fast growing commercial, retail and residential centres of Southport, Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach. There are 16 stations planned for the Stage One corridor, two of which will be within a ten minute walk (600m) of Sphere. The service is planned to operate 24 hours a day every day at 7-8 minute intervals during the day, 15 minute intervals at night time and early morning, and hourly between midnight and 6.00am. Up to 100,000 passenger trips per day are forecast with the predicted journey time between Griffith University and Broadbeach being 35 minutes.
The new $1.76billion 750 bed Gold Coast University hospital is the largest health project underway in Australia today. Located on a 19 hectare site within the Griffith Knowledge Precinct the Gold Coast University Hospital will be a state of the art tertiary level hospital owned and operated by the state Government. The new hospital will be integrated with major infrastructure such as the new Gold Coast Rapid Transit System, a private hospital and specialist suites, and Griffith University to drive growth to become a nationally and internationally recognised centre for innovative medical research and health care. The new hospital will be 9 storeys high and will comprise 8 main buildings and construction is due for completion in 2012 and up to 5000 people will be employed upon completion.
