THE ROTATOR of the ROTARY CLUB OF SOUTHPORT Queensland, Australia District: 9640 Chartered 20 th August, 1945 24 May 2016 Charter No: 6069 www.southportaustraliarotary.org Club No 17905 Service Above Self President s Message 17th May ROSTER 24 May RI President K.R. Ravi Ravindran! DG Anne Egan President Lea Rickwood Lea Rickwood President 2015/16 TREASURER S BIRTHDAYS 1955 Our joint meeting with the Broadbeach Rotary Club at their Hub made a very nice change. With fewer members doing make-up visits to other clubs, it is easy to forget that the way we do things is not necessarily the only way. Apart from the opportunity to meet new people and socialize with a few you don t see that often, visiting another club opens opportunities for networking and cross pollination of ideas. We look forward to welcoming the Broadbeach Club to one of our meetings in the not too distant future. What a cracker of a day last Sunday was! Not since a la Carte in the Park have I seen members, partners and family having so much fun. It was delightful to see some of the children who were reluctant early in the day, engage in the games with gay abandon. Leanda Cooper and her committee are to be congratulated on organizing and co-ordinating the event. It was fabulous also to have the Rotaract members, with all their energy, involved. There is an email from Aunties and Uncles included in this Rotator thanking the club. I hope this picnic day will become an annual event. Peter Hobart is on some experimental drugs at present, which seem to be improving his condition slightly. Graham and Marion visited on Sunday and reported that he was doing better than the last time they had spoken. President Elect Graham Cooper is back from Europe. He will be accompanying me on Thursday to Liberty Community Connect for the Van Unveiling Ceremony. Carousel funds purchased a hoist for the van. See our Facebook page on Friday for photos. Next week PP Marion will be standing in for me as president. I am attending the Restaurant Industry Peer to Peer Cocktail Party where I will be presenting two awards on behalf of the Rotary Club of Southport. I look forward to seeing your smiling faces again on the 31 st of May after a joint board meeting. Following an ample dinner, President Bill invited President Lea to speak about Southport Rotary. Lea told of our 70 th Anniversary celebration, being the oldest Rotary Club on the Gold Coast. She also mentioned our support of Indonesian students, the Bairo Pite Clinic in East Timor and locally our support for Rotary s youth programmes, Griffith University Bursaries in Medicine and Engineering and our Rotaract Club and Satellite Club. Leanda Cooper, Community services Chair, told of our fundraising through the Carousel and the projects it supports. Graham Jones spoke about the Satellite Club at Griffith University and the benefits it provides in bringing younger people into Rotary. Helen Moorfoot told of the work being done with Southport Rotary s help at the Bairo Pite Clinic in East Timor. David O Dwyer as sergeant extracted money from most people for a variety of reasons: birthdays, anniversaries and other misdemeanors. Southport members scooped the pool with Marion Jones winning Heads and Tails and Bill Connelly and Tony Gardner winning the Raffle. President Bill invited members to join in the singing of Happy Birthday to Keith Horton as he cut the cake to mark his 92 nd birthday. Cake was enjoyed by all as the meeting closed at 8.15 pm. Marion J Aunties and Uncles Picnic I wanted to again thank you very much on behalf of Aunties and Uncles QLD for the huge support and efforts from you all at Southport Rotary for our wonderful Picnic yesterday. I have already had a number of emails from people who attended yesterday, thanking Rotary for such a lovely time. The food, activities, location, volunteers and thorough planning were all wonderfully executed. I am sure that if there are any future opportunities for Southport Rotary to network and support with Aunties and Uncles QLD again we would be delighted to hear about it. Thank you again, and please pass on our thanks to your amazing team that were there yesterday. Thoughts for the week. Going to bed the other night, I noticed people in my shed, stealing things. I phoned the police but was told nobody was in the area to help. They said they would send someone over as soon as possible. I hung up. A minute later, I phoned again. "Hello" I said, "I called you a minute ago because there were people in my shed. You don't have to worry now because I shot them." Within minutes, there were half a dozen police cars in the area, plus helicopters and an armed response unit. They caught the burglars red-handed. One of the officers said, "I thought you said you shot them." To which I replied, "I thought you said there was no one available." Log On... Make the barbie hotter Log Off...
