District: 9640 Queensland, Chartered 20 Australia th August, 1945 6 June 2017 Club No 17905 THE ROTATOR of the ROTARY CLUB OF SOUTHPORT Chartered 20 th August 1945 Charter No: 6069 www.southportaustraliarotary.org Service Above Self! RI President John Germ DG Michael Irving President Graham Cooper Lea Rickwood President 2015/16 TREASURER S BIRTHDAYS 1955 Presidents Message for the Rotator of the 6 th June I felt very fortunate to live where we do with the availability of the great medical care of the Gold Coast University Hospital combined with the wonderful support with equipment and care provided by the Gold Coast Hospital Foundation, outlined by Simon with the support of Sabrina. The average age of meeting attendees was reduced considerably thanks to Sam and Anna visiting from our Satellite Club and with a guest, Chris Gray. See photos later in this Rotator of Coast Guard Southport 50 th Anniversary Celebration and commissioning of their new rescue vessel for which we provided $4,880 for navigation equipment. They were most appreciative. Also photographs of a Certificate we received in recognition of the Club s donation to the Australian Rotary Health Foundation and from the Rotary E-Club Next Gen in appreciation of our donation towards their program to ensure all Gold Coast Foster Children received a Christmas present. At a short meeting of your Board we endorsed a candidate as the recipient of our inaugural tertiary education scholarship through our Empowering Indonesian Children for a Brighter Future project. Our usual monthly Board meeting is next Tuesday followed by a Club Assembly when I will ask the members to endorse our new Club bylaws. If you have any questions about them don t hesitate to contact me. Col Lee who chaired the District Conference committee along with wife Donna will visit us on the thirteenth. We will make it a partner s night with two course alternate drop meal. We are also having a great speaker Bob Neich from the Rotary Club of Inverell talking about the Bairo Pite Clinic. Let s make it a big night. SCRIBES REPORT 30 May Chairman Andrew Middleton opened the meeting at 6.15 p.m. with the Four Way Test. The Rotary Minute, by Tony Gardner, was a trip down memory lane to his year as President in 1992-93. Keith Robson was D.G. Meetings were at the old Pacific Hotel Southport. The club had 58 members. The International Convention was in Melbourne. President Graham Cooper welcomed guests from the Gold Coast Hospital Foundation, Simon Flowerdew and Sabrina together with Sam and Anna from the Satellite Club. Chris Grey was a guest of Allan Thompson. The passing of John Donovan, who was President of our club in 1982, was noted with sadness. Graham was a guest of the Coast Guard for their 50 th Anniversary on Saturday. Our club donated $4,880 from Carousel funds for navigation equipment, which was acknowledged with gratitude. D.G. Michael Irving updated the club regarding the flood relief program. District 9640 donated $70,000 and a further $30,000 - $35,000 has been donated by clubs from other districts. Tony Stenton donated 1.1 tons of carpet which has already been distributed. Rotary has been filling the gap while government and insurance companies go through the motions. Michael also commended Sam and the Satellite club for their initiative in making a short video promoting Rotary. Mervyn Powell promoted the 2017 Ballina Food & Wine Festival on Sunday 2 nd of July from 11 a.m. Ian Craig visited former D.G David Oakley in Auckland recently. David has terminal cancer. Michael Lovell and Lionel Perry announced that the Carousel will be closed in a few weeks for maintenance and for 6 weeks from July. There are 3 shifts to fill. Secretary s report 17 members, 2 club guests, 2 Satellite Club members and 1 member s guest for a total of 22. Greg Dux thanked board directors on behalf of Sue for early end of year reports. Sergeant Bill Connelly extracted fines in the usual manner. Heads and Tails were won by guest Chris Grey and the Raffle by Michael Lovell. Simon Flowerdew who is the Philanthropy Manager for the Gold Coast Hospital Foundation spoke about the work it does. Last year 180,000 patients were helped. 5,000 babies are birthed every year. The Foundation provides equipment, improves the environment, facilities and training. Standout achievements are the accommodation facilities for families affected by distance and transport services for 1,000 cancer patients free of charge. Allan Thompson proposed a vote of thanks and presented the certificate of appreciation (literacy kit). Before closing the meeting President Graham Cooper said the club had been acknowledged for our donation to Australian Rotary Health and Christmas presents for kids in foster care facilitated by the Rotary E-Club Next Gen. He reminded board members that there was a meeting next week before Club Assembly. Graham also asked board members to stay back for a short board meeting. The meeting was closed at 7.30 p.m. Lea R. Thoughts For the Week A man was rushed in to hospital yesterday because he swallowed a five dollar note. They are keeping him in for observation on his condition - but so far there has been no change. Why don't men believe in paternity tests? Because the sample is taken from their finger! The young reporter thought long and hard. Finally he handed the Editor the following report. "Mrs. Smith was injured in a car accident today. She is recovering in County Hospital with lacerations on her (. )(. )" A doctor asks a patient: - Sir, were you using a condom during the last time you had sex? - Doctor, what do you mean by the last time? A sign on a cosmetic surgery clinics says: If life gives you lemons, a simple operation can give you melons. Wit seduces by signalling intelligence without nerdiness.
