24TH NATIONAL BONSAI CONVENTION PERTH, 20th - 23rd MAY 2011 Proudly Hosted by BONSAI SOCIETY OF WESTERN AUSTRALIA INC In Partnership with The Association of Australian Bonsai Clubs Ltd

Welcome The Bonsai Society of Western Australia is looking forward to hosting the 24 th AABC Ltd Convention in our Port City of Fremantle. Our chosen theme is Come Together. This represents what is happening to bonsai throughout the world today. With the advent of internet technology and cheaper travel, the world of bonsai is more accessible to everyone and we are more readily able to Come Together to meet. During the convention we are going to celebrate the coming together of: Firstly The different philosophies and styles of bonsai cultivation from different cultures within our region. In this case, China, Japan and Australia. It is important that we appreciate and understand the reasoning behind the different ways bonsai are grown and maintained by our regional neighbours. Secondly The different species we use for bonsai here in Australia, and especially Western Australia. Our native species and the more traditional species found overseas are now being found together in our bonsai collections. In our large exhibition and the local demonstrations there will be an emphasis on our native bonsai. And thirdly The coming together once again of our bonsai family. To renew old friendships or make new friends for life and mutually develop our minds in the ways of Bonsai and Suiseki. We look forward to having Mr Min Hsuan Lo from Taiwan as the International headline demonstrator. He will bring with him the philosophies and development of bonsai from the Chinese perspective. Megumi Bennett from Sydney will be the national demonstrator. Megumi is Australia s only Nippon Bonsai Association qualified instructor and will convey the Japanese way in creating bonsai. As an additional bonus, Bonseki master Yasuko Aoki is visiting Australia for the last time and will demonstrate her skilful ancient art to us and the public of WA We have introduced some new ideas to the programme which promise to provide delegates with the opportunity to enhance their bonsai knowledge. They include having demonstrator critiques of Exhibition trees, a Masterclass for advanced delegates and Workshop options which include Bonseki sessions. We hope knowledge gained from these extras will be taken back to your clubs and shared with the members. Pre and post tours have been sourced with the interest of bonsai and suiseki in mind, to encourage a longer stay in our wonderful state. We invite everyone to Come Together to learn plenty, have lots of enjoyment, and support the AABC Ltd. By attending the national convention, the main source of AABC Ltd funding, every delegate is supporting the continuation of the Visiting Tutor Programme that assists the extension of bonsai knowledge Australia wide. We look forward to seeing all of you in Fremantle 2011 when we Come Together through our mutual love for all that is Bonsai and Suiseki.

Min Hsuan Lo Min Hsuan Lo was born in 1956 in China. His family bonsai nursery was built by his father in 1947. As a child, Lo was at his father s side learning the art of bonsai. After graduating from the Chinese University with a degree in Chinese literature, Lo returned home to work in the family bonsai business to develop his bonsai skills. He began teaching bonsai in Taiwan in 1992, and in 2001 he joined the Ken Kuo Technical University as a bonsai instructor. In 2004, he became the bonsai teacher at Pei Tou Community University. He was one of the founders of the Taiwan Bonsai Creator Association which was started in 1998, and became its Chairman in 2007-2008, and he is currently its Honorary Chairman. TBCA is the most active & powerful bonsai association in Taiwan. Every member must pass a rigorous bonsai competition. Currently TBCA has 134 professional bonsai artists. Lo has had a number of articles published in BCI, International Bonsai, Bonsai Focus and other international Bonsai magazines. He became a member of the BCI editorial staff and was elected to the BCI Board of Directors in 2007. He was given the BCI s 2007 Artist, Writer & Photographer s award; the Art of Bonsai Grand prize; and the TBCA grand prize in 2008. He served as the General Chairman of the 10th Asia Pacific Bonsai and Suiseki Convention & Exhibition in Taiwan 2009. He is also the Technical Consultant of the National Bonsai Association of Taiwan. Lo is famous for the so called LO S STYLE, with lots of vertical curves that appear in large old trees. This unique style was developed from a combination of collected old trees, along with the beauty line from the Chinese calligraphy and life philosophy of ancient Chinese philosophers. Min Hsuan Lo received the grand prize of the JAL world bonsai contest in 1999, and he has won countless other honours since then. He works with all bonsai sizes and species. He has travelled to many parts of the world for bonsai demonstrations, lectures, and workshops. Website: http://blogs.knowledgeofbonsai.org/min_hsuan_lo/-40k

MEGUMI BENNETT Megumi Bennett gained her B.A. in English Literature in Tokyo, Japan. On arriving in Australia in 1974 she continued to develop the bonsai and ikebana skills she had learnt in Japan. Megumi is a graduate of the Ryde School of Horticulture, where she also taught bonsai. In 1999 she founded the Bonsai Society of Sydney Inc and is also a member of the Nippon Bonsai Association and Ikebana International. For many years Megumi has given demonstrations, exhibitions and workshops throughout Australia. She has been interviewed on both radio and T.V and is a contributor to articles on bonsai in Australia and overseas. Her first solo exhibition took place at the Japan Foundation Sydney in 1997. Megumi received the bonsai instructors qualification from the Nippon Bonsai Association, Japan in 2008. She is the first overseas person to receive this recognition. She qualifies as a bonsai artist, teacher, demonstrator and lecturer not only in Japan but internationally as well. In November 2006, the Foreign Minister of Japan, Mr Taro Aso, conferred Foreign Ministerial Awards on two individuals and one group in New South Wales. Mrs Megumi Bennett, Mr Ken Done and the Ikebana International Sydney Chapter 36 Inc were honoured for having greatly strengthened the bilateral relationship. Mrs Bennett and Ikebana International Sydney were presented their awards at a reception at the Consul-General Official Residence on 16 February 2007. YASUKO AOKI Yasuko Aoki started Bonseki in 1960 and has been a Bonseki Master more than 30 years and she has learnt from the style of the Hosokawa School of Bonseki. Yasuko has established her own group called Sakou kai in 1978. She is also head of the Shizuoka Bonseki Group. Sakou kai has toured extensively around the world. Destinations include England, Scotland, Hong Kong, US, Australia and of course Japan. In Australia, Yasuko and her assistants have exhibited and demonstrated in Sydney, Melbourne Adelaide and Tasmania. The reaction from the people attending the exhibitions were very positive towards the Bonseki exhibits and the workshops that were run. Unfortunately, due to age, this will be the last time Yasuko and her group will visit Australia so we are extremely fortunate to have this chance to see this ancient and enthralling art

Local Demonstrators ARTHUR ROBINSON (50yrs) Arthur s business is in making violins and other fine stringed instruments for clients all around the world and as such Arthur brings an artistic flair to everything he does. Arthur has been around the bonsai scene for many years from mother England, to Victoria and finally to Perth. More recently Arthur has devoted his time to specialising in Satsuki Azaleas, forming the Satsuki Society of Australia. CJ LEO (32 yrs) CJ (or Leo) has the magic touch when it comes to growing Tea-trees as bonsai. We ve all tried without much success but CJ s are exquisite. C.J. has brought his bonsai and his bonsai knowledge from Singapore benefitting us in W.A. Always experimenting with bonsai cultivation, especially with native species, CJ is keen to develop Australian native trees as Australian style bonsai utilising the knowledge he has gained. DEREK OAKLEY (25yrs) Derek is one our best bonsai technicians with his trees always presented flawlessly and his attention to detail a feature. Bonsai presentation has been one of Derek s passions which has helped the society to improve the standard of presentation at our annual shows. Derek s other love, apart from Shohin and Mame bonsai, is Australian natives. His favourite species being Melaleuca. He is always actively promoting the use of our native material for bonsai. JOHN OLDLAND (20yrs) John has been involved in Bonsai for many years and has gained his experience from attending a number of BCI and ASPAC conventions and runs the Web Site Bonsai in Asia Guidebook which many of you would have accessed over time. John specialises in Japanese Maples and prefers the traditional species and styles whilst also enjoying multi tree groups and Saikei. John has a strong interest in Suiseki and has a fine collection of local and international stones.

Local Demonstrators JOHN DI VINCENZO (25yrs) John is one of our leading bonsai artists who enjoys creating large bonsai, his collection contains many of the bigger bonsai you will see at the Exhibition. John specialises in collecting Yamadori and transforming stumps into beautiful bonsai within a relatively short time. PETER ODIN (35yrs) Peter is one of our longest serving members and also owns and runs the Bonsai Emporium nursery. Pete has travelled extensively to seminars and conventions around Australia and South East Asia and is a regular demonstrator at our club. He is our resident expert in Pines but loves group plantings and getting the carving tools in his hands. SYD REEVES (17yrs) Syd is the elder statesman of our club but still manages to maintain a large collection though now he tends to keep his new trees on the small size. Syd enjoys all styles, sizes and material in bonsai and has been a long time demonstrator at the club. The standard of trees shown by Syd at our shows is exceptional. MARC WIDMER (4yrs) Marc and his partner Terri Piggot are our up and coming bonsai artists. Marc has shown a fairly rapid development in his bonsai pursuits and won the BSWA Encouragement Award in 2007. As Marc works for the Agriculture Department, he is our go to man when advice is sought on diseases and pests. Marc s preferred styles are Shohin, Literati and Penjing. TERRI PIGGOT (4yrs) Terri has also been awarded the Encouragement Award from our society and has created some very nice bonsai in a short period of time. We feel it is now time for Terri to take the next step along her bonsai journey. Figs and Junipers are Terri s species and her long term wish is to have a permanent bonsai display in Perth somewhere, to expose the public of W.A. to bonsai and encourage more young people to the art of Bonsai.
