Sadly, Janet and I spent most of the time sick as dogs, on cold/flu medications and in bed. Didn t get to visit with most of the kids and grandkids and that left us feeling cheated. We re getting over the illness now and do feel blessed to be together. Our time before Christmas included two great weeks in Mazatlán, Mexico. That was wonderful. While everyone in BC was enjoying record cold temperatures and lots of snow we were lounging by the pool. T he margaritas and cervesas went down very smoothly and time with our friends there was appreciated. Got the chance to venture into the interior to some small villages and really enjoyed that time with the Mexican people. While we were away many of you came together to celebrate the season with your Airstream friends at the Christmas Dinner at Pat Quinn s restaurant. Thanks so much to Joyce Christenson for hosting this event. In attendance were: Gerry & Judy Greth (up from Anacortes); John & Jane Neilson (over from the Island); Tom & Kay McQuarrie; Wayne & Jeannie Jeffrey; Brigitte & Tom Sooke; Jay & Castel Tuason; Amir John & Maria Showrai (with Atessa & Keyvan); Alex & Arlene Matches; Tom Akam; Moe Storoshenko; and, of course, the hostess with the mostest, Joyce Christenson. Reports I received were that a great time was had by all. Apparently Pat Quinn s provided a wonderful dinner and everyone really appreciated the beautiful decorations all hand made by Joyce. Next on the agenda is our annual get together at Traveland RV Supercentre. This will happen on January 14 th. We start with a brief general meeting at 11 a.m. followed by a talk from Traveland staff who will bring us up-to-date with all things Airstream. and then we ll enjoy a lunch on the showroom floor provided by Traveland. I really hope you ll be able to join us for this time of catching up, learning, and planning together. Of special note at this meeting we ll be asked to approve the design of our new BC Unit Flag. Several of our members have worked long and hard on this and I believe you ll really like the results of their efforts. We need to get your approval before the flag can go to the International Board for their final approval. Note: we need to know how many will be at Traveland. If you are coming, please call Tom Akam (he s the host) at 604 538-4149 and let him know ASAP. You could also email Tom at: lighthouse13381@shaw.ca. (cont d on page 2)

THE COMMUNITY CORNER We were sorry to hear of the passing of our member, Bill Smith on December 8th. He was such a nice man, full of songs and stories. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Marie and family. The below is an excerpt from the Armstrong s annual Christmas letter... Rhonda and I have decided to move back to Ontario next spring. We have purchased a home on the Bay of Quinte near Belleville, in Prince Edward County, about 25 minutes from the boys. We have sold our house here in a record 4 days and are now slowly beginning the process of packing once again. This will really be our last move! We are both looking forward to another new adventure. Mother nature is helping us a bit because as I look out the window here at our current home, it is still snowing and -3C, very pretty but unusual for Vancouver Island. The new owners here take possession of our house on April 26th and we take possession of our new home in Ontario on May 3rd. Lots of purging and packing ahead! We will pull our Airstream to Belleville, Ontario during the last two weeks of April. We are excited to be closer to some Airstreamers from Ottawa and London, ON whom we met on our Rocky Mountain Caravan in 2015. Have a wonderful happy healthy 2017. See the Roster Changes page for their new address information. We wish them the best of luck. (Paul s Perambulations cont d) The morning after the Traveland event Janet and I will hook up to our Airstream and head for parts south. We ll go to the coast and work our way (slowly) down to northern California. There we ll join the California Dreaming Caravan put on by the Northern California Unit of WBCCI. That will be followed by time in both southern California and Arizona. We ll be gone about 2 months (oh, the joys of retirement). Because of our travel plans, we ll miss being with you all at the upcoming Valentine s Dinner on February 12. You ll find lots of info about this celebration elsewhere in this newsletter and we hope you come out and have a great time with your WBCCI BC Unit friends. In closing, I want to offer some thanks: Due to my work schedule/travel (and my personal travel) I m likely the most absentee President this BC Unit has ever had. I m deeply grateful to all our members who keep the Club running smoothly. Thank you all!!! Jay Tuason has, once again, spent an enormous amount of time and effort to collect everyone s annual dues, remit to the head office and keep track of it all. Thank you Jay!!! I don t know what I d do without the quiet support and guidance of Tom Akam and Arlene Matches. Thank you both!!! We have a long list of members who are planning and organizing events, rallies and caravans for us all to enjoy during this year. Too many to list here. Thank you all for everything you do!!! Have a WONDERFUL New Year. See you at Traveland. Paul If anyone has news to share, please advise Arlene Matches for an insertion into this column. Births, anniversaries, health issues, good news or bad...anything you wish to share with the membership is welcome. We are so very thankful to everyone for their continued support of our charity and, in this regard would everyone please continue to collect pop and beer can tabs and bring them to the next luncheon or rally you attend. We will, in turn, give them to Sharon, our coordinator, who delivers proceeds to the Children s Hospital charity. For your generosity we THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU Festive table dressed by Joyce for the Christmas party. PAGE 2

Add July 22nd -29th to your 2017 Calendars. Why not get a group together for a caravan; then plan to visit lovely Escanaba, Michigan where the 60th International Rally is being held. However, if you miss the 2017 rally, we just learned that the 2018 rally is once again going to be held in Salem, Oregon so keep July 2018 available to attend THAT one. Details can be found in all upcoming Blue Berets. PAGE 4

AN AIRSTREAM TRAILER In a recent email message I learned that Dan & Carolyn Stewart (a really nice couple from Abbotsford we met at the Merritt Rally) are still searching for a later model Airstream trailer with queen bed layout. It seems they just hear about one for sale and it is snapped up too quickly. Maybe we can assist them in their search? They can be reached at dancarolynstewart@gmail.com or phone them on their cell at 778-982-3731. Don t forget to carry old expired Blue Beret magazines with you when you travel. There are future members all over North American (and now Europe) who would love to enjoy the Wally Byam Airstream Club lifestyle. Many owners (new and old) don t know of the club and an old Blue Beret may be just the incentive to join us. Here are cards for two technicians that are proven to be reliable (and who bring their garage to you!!)!!...smile!! President, Paul Wheeler, requests new and affiliate members to please forward their info (photo and bio) for inclusion on the BC Unit website. We also encourage our regular and affiliate members who haven t done so to add a picture and update their biographies as well. There is a printable roster available from the website. Please contact our Web Master, Monty Sheldan or Arlene Matches with regard to accessing the website (if you haven t already done so). The email address for Monty is: msheldan@mac.com and for Arlene use matches7403@gmail.com. Tom Akam also has a printable and up-to-date version of our Mini Roster in Word format which he will email upon request. Tom s email address is: lighthouse13381@shaw.ca PAGE 5

Island Culinary Road Trip Caravan August 12 25, 2017 This caravan is comprised of longer stays in each area with short drives on travel days. Day trips and tours are suggested but participation will be at your own pace. We are focusing on food and drink with opportunities for visiting a distillery, and a cider-making facility, a meadery and wineries as well as organic farms and markets, a sea salt harvestry or a seaweed tour. Some unique eateries are also on the list of activities for the caravan. Here is an opportunity to take in one, two or three BC Unit events which will take place one after the other. The caravan ends the day before the start of the Vancouver Island rally at Comox. The Comox rally ends just before the rally at Lund, BC. If you are interested in any or all of the events, you need to book now. The caravan has only one space left. A $100.00 deposit is required to hold your space. The deposit (kitty fee) will be applied to tours and some caravan meals. The accommodations for the two rallies is limited so you need to book those sooner rather than later.
