HISTORY & GARDENS OF THE CARIBBEAN ROUNDTRIP ANTIGUA ABOARD SEA CLOUD II Featuring Yale Professors Linda Peterson & Fred Strebeigh JANUARY 13 TO 20, 2013

What better time than winter to appreciate the gentle climate of the Caribbean, as well as the spectacular varieties of flora and fauna that thrive in this region of the world? Join Yale Educational Travel in January 2013 for a Caribbean voyage aboard the elegant three-masted yacht Sea Cloud II, chartered exclusively for the Association of Yale Alumni, Harvard Alumni Association, the National Trust for Historic Preservation and Smithsonian Journeys. This trip offers a rare opportunity to experience the history of the Caribbean, with its centuries-old traditions of gardening, as you visit gracious plantation houses and colorful port towns, while savoring the ambience of a classic sailing ship. PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS Program of lectures by Yale professors, Linda Peterson and Fred Strebeigh, and Dublin-based horticulturist Patrick Bowe, author of Gardens of the Caribbean A seven-night voyage aboard the privately chartered sailing yacht, Sea Cloud II Private plantation and botanical garden visits Swimming at pristine white-sand beaches Tour of the childhood home of Alexander Hamilton Cocktails at the exclusive Bitter End Yacht Club TORTOLA & VIRGIN GORDA ST. EUSTATIUS NEVIS I LES DES SAINTES CARIBBEAN SEA ST. BARTHELEMY A NTIGUA Linda Peterson and Fred Strebeigh. YALE FACULTY LINDA PETERSON has taught English at Yale since 1977. A specialist in British literature of the 19th century, Professor Peterson has served as chair of the English department and as Director of Graduate Studies. She is the author of Becoming a Woman of Letters, general editor of The Norton Reader, and author and editor of several other books. Alumni who have had the good fortune to know Professor Peterson through her participation in AYA programs find her a delightful companion and stimulating lecturer. Professor Peterson s lectures will focus on fiction of and about the Caribbean. A widely published non-fiction writer, FRED STREBEIGH has appointments as Senior Lecturer both in the School of Forestry and Environmental Studies and in the Department of English. A member of the Yale College Class of 1974, Mr. Strebeigh has written about defenders of Russian nature in Sierra, Smithsonian, and Russian Life magazines and on diverse topics for publications including Atlantic Monthly, Audubon, New Republic, and The New York Times Magazine. In 2004, Fred received Yale s DeVane Award for teaching, presented each year by Phi Beta Kappa to one member of the university s active faculty, and in 2009 was awarded the Richard H. Brodhead 68 Prize for Teaching Excellence. His spouse is Linda Peterson. For this program, his presentations will discuss natural history and the trade in specimens between Europe and the Caribbean.

In the afternoon sail to the North Sound of Virgin Gorda. You may wish to go ashore to visit the famous Bitter End Yacht Club before a barbeque dinner on deck. Colorful island homes, St. Barthélemy. MIAMI 1 ANTIGUA Sunday, January 13 Depart on a flight from Miami. Upon arrival in Antigua, transfer to Sea Cloud II for your sevennight cruise. ST. The captain will host the group for welcome cocktails and dinner this evening. TORTOLA, BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS Tuesday, January 15 Today step ashore in Tortola, the largest of the British Virgin Islands. Visit the J.R. Schmidt Botanical Garden. Sea Cloud II sails in the early afternoon. NEVIS Friday, January 18 Arrive at the island of Nevis, birthplace and childhood home of Alexander Hamilton. OPTIONAL PRELUDE ANTIGUA January 10 to 13, 2013 Antigua is a jewel among the group of Leeward Islands, so named because of their orientation away from the prevailing winds. Spend three nights at the charming St. James Club, situated on its own peninsula with ocean views and white sandy beaches. Discover the southern part of the island with Patrick Bowe, who will inform us about local garden history. Visit the restored Governor General s residence overlooking English Harbour and St. John s Anglican Cathedral, tour a black sugar farm and, by boat, explore the off-shore island of Barbuda, known for its bird sanctuary.
