While going through the 60 m tunnel a sound installation will allow you to hear machine-gun fire and echoes of bombardments which bring the visitor back in time when tunnels like these were used as a shelter against the freezing cold and enemy fire. A moving scenario which commemorates in a captivating way the all too often tragic history of men who have lived on these mountains during the White War. At the arrival area of the Paradiso Chairlift at 2.780 m (the Rifugio Capanna Presena mountain hut is located here) it is possible to admire the Presena glacier, often covered by special protective groundsheets during the summer which are essential to protect the ice and preserve it for the next winter season. This project plan to protect the snow was created by the University of Trento to cover the snow with special groundsheets which reflect the sun light, considerably slowing down the glacier melting process. From the arrival point of the Paradiso Gondola lift, starts the Sentiero dei Fiori path, a well-known and difficult route with outstanding landscapes, both from a naturalistic and historical point of view. In fact it is a demanding via-ferrata route and it is very exposed, suitable only for expert hikers equipped with sling and snap-hook and with climbing harness, ice axe, crampons, helmet and lack of vertigo. It is particularly dangerous if frozen. It is located at a height of 3.000 m on the inaccessible peaks/ridges between Castellaccio and Pisgana, the ancient border line between the Italian Reign and the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It runs through the daring walkways, tunnels and retrenchments of the Italian front line during the Great War. There are amazing views of the ridges and glaciers of the Adamello and Ortles Cevedale mountain ranges. From Passo Tonale, it is possible to descend to Ponte di Legno with the Ponte di Legno-Vigili-Tonale gondola lift and visit this town which is an important place with a long history as a tourist resort, among the most well known in Italy. Ponte di Legno was nominated in 1912 by the Italian Touring Club as the first Italian resort for tourism and winter sports. Today, it is known by many with the title of The Pearl of Val Camonica thanks to the characteristic features of this town, the breathtaking landscape which surrounds it and the numerous sports and accommodation facilities. From the arrival point of the chairlift (the Malga Valbiolo restaurant is located here) walk up a steep section along a well-marked trail taking you up to Passo dei Contrabbandieri (2681 m n 111 SAT trail). To the south-east, you will enjoy a lovely view of the Presanella and to the north-west of the Val di Viso, Ercavallo, Tre Signori peaks and mounts Coleazzo and Pietrarossa. There are numerous walkways and fortifications along the pass and the entire mountain ridge dating back to WWI. It is necessary to be very careful when walking along this section especially on the 2

mountain side that descends towards Valle di Viso. From the pass, it is possible to walk down to the Montozzo basin and the Rifugio Bozzi mountain hut (2481 m) in about 30 minutes by following the old war trail (you must be very careful along the first section which is a very steep slope). From Rifugio Bozzi, after a short hike upwards it is possible to walk along the entire Val Montozzo which leads to the artificial Pian Palù lake in Val di Peio (approx. 3 hours along the n 111 SAT trail). If you would also like to hike along the first section of this trail on a dirt road from Passo Tonale, then go upwards after the monument located at Passo Tonale (to the left on the Val Camonica side) and follow the road that leads to the ancient hospice. Therefore go upwards along the Trentino side of Val Albiolo along the same road or by taking shortcuts through the slopes and the lovely mountain fields which are home to numerous alpine marmots, during which you will enjoy lovely panoramic views of the Presanella mountain group. Of course, the elevation difference with the Passo dei Contrabbandieri will increase to 800 m as well as the total time of the itinerary which will increase one hour and a half. This part of the itinerary is however a pleasant and easy walk. Recommended route for hikes: from the arrival area of the Paradiso gondola lift, an easy one-hour and a half hike leads to Capanna Presena (at 2.730 m) where you will also discover the lovely Monticello lakes and the important Monumento alla Fratellanza Brotherhood Monument located at Passo Paradiso, once the site of many bloody battles and the border between the Italian Reign and the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Recommended mountain bike route: from Passo Tonale, a descent with an average difficult level through meadows and a dirt road leading to Ponte di Legno and on the last flat section alongside the Narcanello creek. To get back to the starting point it is possible to take the Pontedilegno-Vigili-Tonale gondola lift. FREE ADMISSION TO THE MOST IMPORTANT MUSEUMS AND PLACES OF HISTORICAL INTEREST IN THE VALLEY Forte Strino (fort): it is located along the road to Tonale, between the pass with the same name and the town of Vermiglio. It was built in 1862 as part of a fortification system in the Trentino area put in place by the Austrian General Staff just after the wars of independence, when Trentino became the southern border of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The fort, like the town of Vermiglio, was fundamental at the front line during the First World War. Today, after more than 90 years from the end of these tragic events in which the fort had a leading role, it has been unveiled after extensive excavation work and restoration process, which was almost archaeological, to become a historical museum commemorating the White War. Opening times: from June 14 th to September 28 th from 9.30 am to 12.30 pm - 2.30 pm to 5.30 pm from July 19 th to August 31 st, open all day from 9.30 am to 6.30 pm - For further information: Vermiglio Information Office - Tel. 0463 758200 Museo della Guerra Bianca in Vermiglio (WWI Museum): located within the new cultural center, it hosts a permanent exhibit on the First World War, with relics, weapons and pictures salvaged through the years by the last local retriever, the legendary engineer sergeant Emilio Serra. For approximately 40 years he constantly searched the mountains in the upper part of Val di Sole, which was the site of tragic battles between June 1915 and October 1918. Opening times: from June 21 st to August 1 st and from September 1 st to September 29 th open daily from 10.00 am to 12.00 pm - 4.00 pm to 7.00 pm from August 2 nd to August 31 st open daily from 10.00 am to 12.00 pm 2.00 pm to 7.00 pm. exhibit by the Vermiglio local council and created inside a granite tunnel at a height of 2.600 m, which was dug out by the soldiers during the First World War. While going through the 60 m tunnel a sound installation will allow you to hear machine-gun fire and echoes of bombardments which take visitors back in time when tunnels like these were used as a shelter against the freezing cold and enemy fire. A moving scenario which commemorates in a captivating way the all too often tragic history of men who lived on these mountains during the White War. Opening times: daily from 8.30 am to 4.30 pm, weather/snow conditions permitting For further information: Passo Tonale Information Office - Tel. 0364 903838 Molino Ruatti in Rabbi - Watermill museum: it is located in Rabbi, in the town called Pracorno. The mill dates back to the 18 th century and it was in use until 1982. In 2009 it became a museum and was opened to the public. The machinery in the flour milling area (millstone and little crusher for the barley) is still fully functional. The visit to the house allows visitors to travel back in time to the peasant life of the 19 th century. It is possible to visit the ground floor stable area with all the agricultural tools; meanwhile the upper floor, where the living area is with bedrooms, the kitchen and the stua (a characteristic room covered in wooden planks), takes us back to the everyday life of the miller and his family. A glimpse at Valle di Rabbi s history can be seen in the Memories Room which has a photo archive. The visit ends on the top floor, where the hayloft and the stable boys (called famei ) bedroom are located. Opening times: from June 21 st to June 30 th on Saturdays and Sundays 10.00 am to 12.30 pm 2.30 pm to 6.30 pm - from July 1 st to September 7 th closed on Mondays and open from Tuesday to Sunday 10.00 am to 12.00 pm and 2.30 pm to 6.30 pm (Guests with a Val di Sole Opportunity card have free admission to the museum Ruatti during the times stated above.
