The Val di Sole stretches at the highest altitudes of Trentino, from the 700m a.s.l. at the bottom, where the river Noce flows, up to 3500m among the mountains covered with perennial snow. The slopes of these mountains are scattered with countless lakes (Lago Nero, Lago di Tòvel, Lago delle Marmotte, etc.) formed by the glaciers lying above (Ghiacciaio The Val di Sole tourist area also includes two side valleys, Pejo and Rabbi, known for centuries for their spa waters rich in ferrous minerals, indicated for liver disorders and many other ailments. For mountain bike and trekking fans, the valleys are excellent starting points for excursions in the Ortles-Cevedale Group. Folgarida, built in 1965, and Marilleva offer a wide range of tourist facilities especially in winter; the ski slopes and lifts are well connected between them and with the Madonna di Campiglio railway station (photo on the right: a view of Folgarida). The millennial history of this nook in the Trentino region is testified by the many strongholds (Caldes Castle, Rock of Samoclevo, S. Michele Castle in Ossana, Palazzo Pezzen in Croviana, Palazzo Migazzi in Covolo) and sacred buildings (the little church of St. Mary Magdalen in Cuciano, the church of the Virgin s Nativity in Pelizzano, the church dedicated to St. Valentine in Malè). 2

3 In January 1999 in Val di Sole the best snowboarders in the world competed for the title of "World Champion" in the different specialties of this young sport. 400 athletes from over 35 countries took part in the competitions of the 4 official disciplines (Giant Slalom, Duel, Half Pipe and for the first time in a World Championship - Boardercross) and in a spectacular Straight Jump show. Nearly 5 billion lire was invested in new lifts and lighting systems for the night-time Half Pipe, Duel and Straight Jump finals. In addition to the races, the programme included many entertainments throughout the whole week: best-selling European snowboard magazines, together with local pubs and clubs, organized fantastic parties for each night of the week, and trendy bands played live in Malé during the opening ceremony, as well as in the 4 towns that hosted the contest. The spectacular quality of snowboard competitions, combined with the excitement of the night life, made VAL DI SOLE '99 an unforgettable World Championship. 3

THE STUDY In 1998, Disano Group s lighting design consulting centre completed a study for the lighting of the Folgarida ski slope, in view of the 99 snowboard World Championship, whose competitions

One of the objectives was to create a championship-grade facility, fit for televising the event while at the same time ensuring adequate visual comfort to the athletes.

4 THE STUDY In 1998, Disano Group s lighting design consulting centre completed a study for the lighting of the Folgarida ski slope, in view of the 99 snowboard World Championship, whose competitions would be scheduled at night. The first step consisted in a study of the territory: the target area extends over more than 15,000 square meters, the track is 300m long, with an average gradient of over 33% and a conifer forest surrounding it. The slope is categorized as a black trail, only suitable for advanced skiers. One of the objectives was to create a championship-grade facility, fit for televising the event while at the same time ensuring adequate visual comfort to the athletes. This involved minimizing glare effects and providing consistently even illumination on strongly sloping terrain, where bad lighting can prove hazardous. Therefore, the aiming of light sources was carefully studied through simulations carried out using special lighting design programmes, and subsequently tested on the field (below, left: a testing session). Another objective was to protect the environment: a conifer forest extends all along the slope, and a too invasive installation could have spoiled the location s pristine beauty. To this end, we used 15m and 20m light towers, so as not to exceed the height of the tree tops, and placed them at 5 meters from the slope edge so they could be confused with the vegetation and would not endanger the skiers safety (below, centre and right). 4
