Historical WALKING TOURS Sommerville Walk Treleaven Walk

Lucknow's History James Sommerville, who came to be known as the Father of Lucknow, was the owner of Lots 57, 58, 59 and 60 on the first Concession of Kinloss. After purchasing the property from Eli Stauffer, who had built the first sawmill in 1854, south of Blackhorse, Sommerville had this property surveyed into village lots and put them up for auction in September 1858. The settlement was named after Lucknow, India, because of the memorable events associated with that city in the quelling of the Indian Mutiny in the fall of 1857. A number of the original streets bear the names of the generals who took a leading part in the saving of India for the Empire. There was much controversy as to whether the village should be incorporated and annexed to the County of Huron or the County of Bruce, due to the fact that the village straddles the boundary line between the two counties. When all was said and done, the Lieutenant Governor issued a proclamation (June 1874) annexing the incorporated village of Lucknow into the County of Bruce.

The original water system for the village was built in 1889, and included water mains and a series of hydrants. At the pump house, steam was kept for 24 hours a day to ensure a bountiful supply of water should a fire break out. A modern domestic water supply and fire protection system was approved in 1930, and consisted of a standpipe, a new pump house on Ross Street with a fire pump and pump controls, more water mains and hydrants. Three more wells were drilled in the following years. Lucknow currently has a population of 1100. A province-wide municipal reorganization in January of 1999 created the Township of Huron- Kinloss when the villages of Lucknow and Ripley and the townships of Kinloss and Huron amalgamated.

1. 662 Campbell Street Sports Complex The original arena was built in 1884. A new arena was constructed, in the existing parking lot, in 1937 at a cost of $12,000. Artificial ice equipment was installed in 1962. The arena parking lot was the site of Martin's Hotel. The existing arena was built in two phases. The upstairs warm room was added in 2010 with the new Paul Henderson Hall being dedicated in December 2010. 2. 659 Campbell Street In 1987, the current building was erected in the area of the old Silverwoods store that sat on the corner of Campbell and Stauffer. In 1995, Knechtels expanded the building to include a larger fresh produce department, an instore bakery plus upstairs office space. 3. 651 Wheeler Street This home was built in 1897 for Bill Davison, the local undertaker. The family moved into the house by 1902. The hearse and horses were stored in a barn on the property. In 1974 extensive renovations were completed. An addition was added to the north side in 1985. Sommerville Walk 4. 543 Gough Street - Sepoy Manor This is a 19th century residence. In 1951, this location was known as Lucknow Private Hospital and was run by the Bakers. George Newbold purchased the building in 1960 and turned it into a long term care home (Pinecrest). In 1974, Pinecrest moved to their new location at 399 Bob Street. Eventually the building was turned into a seniors residence. In 2011 new owners did extensive renovations and in 2015 a new addition was completed. 2 5. 708 Havelock Street Known as the Henderson house, it was built in 1908 by John W. Henderson. Around 1926 another house was added to the original structure. The distinctive porch was added then. In the late 1940s, the left half of the porch was closed in. A small garage was added to house the first mill truck for Henderson Lumber. The house remained in the Henderson family until 1995. 6. 782 Havelock Street - Henderson RONA Lumber The large storage building, moved from across the street, was the original Great Western Hotel. In 1925 John W. Henderson & William Fisher formed a partnership for the lumber store. In 1942 Fisher sold to Henderson. The three Henderson sons, Morgan, Donald and Jim took over the business in 1947. The business sold in 1989.

7. 592 Outram Street - St. Peter's Anglican Church The church was built in 1878 on land donated by a member of the congregation. The church was renovated in 1900 and the tower beautified. This church closed its doors in December 2014. 3 Sommerville Walk 8. 533 Hamilton Street - Lucknow Lawn Bowling The lawn bowling club is the oldest non-profit organization in town. Following a 1954 fire, a new clubhouse was built with an expansion completed in 1980. The club is still going strong today. 3 9. 533 Hamilton Street - Lucknow Tennis Courts The Lucknow Kinsmen constructed the tennis and basketball courts in 1981. On June 23, 2015 the Kinsmen rededicated the courts after installing a sports tile surface, updating the fencing and adding lighting. The sport of pickle ball was also included.

Sommerville Walk 10. 578 Havelock Street - Lucknow Presbyterian Church After two Presbyterian churches joined together in 1886, this new church was built in 1890. Rev. Angus MacKay preached in both English and Gaelic. In 1950, Rev. MacDonald was called and served the church for 25 years. Four young people from the congregation have gone on to enter the ministry. 4 11. 511 Havelock Street This house was built in 1860 by James Sommerville, one of Lucknow s first merchants. This is one of the first homes in town and the only one with a cupola after the English Georgian style common in the Maritimes. Renovations to the home have uncovered artifacts of the era, one such artifact being a valentine in a glass case dating back to 1881 from the then owner Brian Mallough to his wife. 12. 505 Havelock Street - Lucknow United Church This church, located at the intersection of Campbell and Havelock Streets, sits on the former site of Lucknow's first blacksmith shop. The cornerstone of the smitty can be found beside the church cornerstone. Built in 1885 for $10,500, the church became the United Church after two Methodist Churches united in 1925.

13. 573 Campbell Street The building was originally the Bank of Montreal prior to its move in 1972. McDonagh Insurance moved into the building and is the oldest family run business in town. Sommerville Walk 14. 579 Campbell Street This location is the site of the former McGarry Hotel. In 1920, T.W. Smith tore the hotel down and rebuilt a modern brick garage. In 1998 that building was destroyed by fire and rebuilt to the building it is today. 5 15. 589 Campbell Street This building formerly housed the Lucknow Sentinel but is best known by locals as Brown's Lucknow Fruit Market operated by Cyril and Dorothy Brown.

Sommerville Walk 16. 597 Campbell Street The funeral chapel was built in 1951 by MacLennan & MacKenzie. The location was formerly four businesses that were destroyed by fire in 1950. Bob MacKenzie took over the business in 1966. In 1978 MacKenzie Funeral Home joined with the McCreath Funeral Home in Ripley. The business is now operated by a third generation of the MacKenzie family. 6 17. 605-615 Campbell Street - Beaver Block This block of buildings was built in 1908 and is now owned by the third generation of the Joynt family. It has been home to several businesses including Henry's Fruit Market, Rathwell Shoes, a hair stylist, health unit and insurance to name a few. 18. 623-625 Campbell Street - Anderson Block The original building on this site was destroyed by fire in 1904. The current structure, built in 1905, is the former home of the Johnstone Furniture and Funeral Home and the local dental office. In 1969, a hair salon started up in the far end and is still a hair salon today and one of the longest running businesses operating in its original location.

Treleaven Walk 1. 662 Campbell Street - Sports Complex The original arena was built in 1884. Treleaven Walk 2. 640 Willoughby Street Since 1864 this property has had an interesting history including hotels, foundry/machine shop, artificial limb manufacturer, Lucknow Co-op, Purina feed supply, and plumbing and heating. 7 In August 1979, it became the business site of Cliff's Plumbing and Heating and the owners' residence upstairs. The business relocated to a new building on Campbell Street east in March 2009.

Treleaven Walk 3. 293 Place Street - Lucknow Community Christian Reformed Church The church was opened in 1968, after the congregation outgrew a temporary downtown location. In September 2014, the church suffered extreme smoke and fire damage, necessitating services and programs to be held in other churches. Following extensive repair, services resumed in February 2015. 8 4. 323 Havelock Street This location has been home to a flax mill, originally known as Anderson Flax, since 1920. The original cement mill building is still standing and being used today. Now known as Snobelen Farms Ltd., this business has grown exponentially to encompass all aspects of production, processing, and trading grains, oilseeds and pedigree seed for markets across Canada and around the world.

441 Havelock Street - Former St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church This was originally a Presbyterian Church. Built in 1873, it was sold in 1890 and the Roman Catholic Church established in February 1891. This church closed in June 2007 and was subsequently renovated into a private residence. 458 Campbell Street - Lucknow Waterworks Conservation Area The first Waterworks of the Village to serve as fire protection was operational between 1890 and 1931. Water from the river supplied energy to a wood-fired steam boiler, in a white brick building on the west side of the river, to operate a pump that sent water through the mains. A steam whistle at the engine house alerted the firemen. Treleaven Walk 5. 6. 7. 446 Campbell Street This beautiful fieldstone structure was originally known as the Rob Roy Hotel, one of eight hotels in Lucknow. It was owned by Robert McCarroll and it is said that it was built in this location in anticipation of the railway passing nearby. 9

Treleaven Walk 8. 457 Campbell Street This is the former site of Treleaven's Feed Mill. The Treleaven name was associated with the mill from 1863 to 1988. Razed by fire in August 1962, it was rebuilt and again destroyed by fire in May 1993. This location is currently home to Nine Waves and Protekta Inc. and is the gateway to the Greenway Walk. 10 9. 498 Campbell Street This building dates back to pre-automobile days. Its original use was the church livery stable where members tied up their horses during services. It was renovated in the 1960s and has since served as a bowling alley. 10. 526 Campbell Street - Lucknow Library Building (Bruce County Library) The Andrew Carnegie Foundation donated $7,500 towards the $10,000 cost of this library building, which opened in 1910. Prior to amalgamation in 1999, the building also served as the municipal office for the village. HAWK Theatre, a local theatrical group founded in 2007, is located in the upper auditorium of the building.

11. 580 Campbell Street This building is located on the site of the Cain House, a large hotel which burnt in 1938. Postal service was first established in 1860. This building opened in 1939 as the town post office until mail became decentralized. The building now houses a chiropractic and wellness centre. Treleaven Walk 12. 477 Inglis Street - Lucknow Legion Veterans of WW I chartered Lucknow Legion Branch 309 in January 1941. During WW II, the branch supported 'the boys' overseas and their families at home. This building was the former Air Force Training Centre and was moved here from Port Albert. Numerous additions and renovations were completed over the years. The branch continues to support all veterans and is actively involved in many community projects. 11 13. 469 Inglis Street - Nine Mile Villa Built in 2009, this 22-bed, 18-room retirement home offers private, semi-private and couples rooms. The addition of this style of living makes it easier for seniors to transition from home to retirement living.

Treleaven Walk 14. 598-606 Campbell Street This block of buildings has housed many businesses over the years. Past and present residents will remember it as being home to Ashton's Ladies and Men's Wear. The town barber shop was located where the laudromat is today. 12 15. 612 Campbell Street In 1908 Robert J. Button opened the shop under the name Button's Butcher Shop. Milk and meat were sold and delivered locally. The shop remained in the family until 1973. After several owners, the building is still home to the local butcher shop. 16. 622 Campbell Street Lucknow's oldest brick building housed the first pharmacy and dates back to 1863. In 1949, Elmer Umbach purchased the business and operated it until 1991. Mr. Umbach made the headlines in March 1964, after burning his entire stock of tobacco products. Many renovations and expansions to the building have taken place but the pharmacy remains.

17. 626 Campbell Street Lucknow's first hardware store, operated by Thomas Lawrence, opened in 1869. In December 1964 the store, along with several other businesses, was destroyed by a fire. A new building was erected and the present facility has had an addition and continues to operate as a hardware store. Treleaven Walk 18. 630 Campbell Street Lucknow's early banks were private. The first such bank operating in 1877 was owned by Joseph Siddall. In 1905, the last private owners sold their interests to Molson's Bank (later to be Bank of Montreal). The original Bank of Montreal was located in the McDonagh Insurance building and relocated to its present site in 1973. 19. 638 Campbell Street The owners of this building trace back to James Sommerville. For over 75 years this building was known far and wide as the Mayfair Restaurant. In 1980 a total remodel was undertaken. With the forming of the liquor licensing board in Ontario, when the restaurant reopened it was the first business to be able to serve liquor with meals. Keeping the history of the building in mind the new owners named their business Mayfair Training. 13

Treleaven Walk 20. 644 Campbell Street This building has had many owners and many businesses. The building housed a grocery store prior to the Lucknow Co-op occupying it. A music shop and Lucknow Farm Supply ran businesses out of this location. In 2001, extensive renovations were made to convert the building to a bake shop. Today it is the place to find butter tarts that are to die for. 14 21. 648 Campbell Street This building is the former Royal Hotel. It has housed many businesses including Finlayson's General Store, Finlayson's Restaurant and the B Kool Ice Cream Parlor. The Old Light Lodge was located in the upper portion of the building until 2012 when the lodge sold the building. On the west wall of this building is the town mural, painted in 1998 by Allen Hilgendorf. The mural honours Lucknow's heritage and features Paul Henderson celebrating his historic goal in the 1972 Summit Series.

Lucknow & District Fire Department The early history for the department is vague, however, records show a purchase of a hand pumper in 1864, a short six years after the founding of the village. The hand pumper was used until 1889 when the village waterworks was completed. The department re-organized and was equipped with a new hose reel that can be found today in the archives of the Bruce County Museum. In 1969 the village's former police car was purchased for the department. In 1962, the department went to dial up phones, with five installed in firefighters' homes and a sixth at the fire hall. The fire department is now on a central dispatch call system. After having many homes, a new fire hall was built at the west end of the village in 2010, at a cost of $1.1 million. The department has fought its share of major fires in the village. In 1930, the 3 storey Cairn Hotel (580 Campbell Street); 1964, the Crest Hardware store where four businesses were lost (626 block of Campbell Street); 1968, the Lucknow Public School was completely gutted by fire (Havelock Street); and in 1993, after being rebuilt following a major fire, Treleaven's Mill (457 Campbell Street) was destroyed once again. Since 1977, after the forming of a joint fire board, the department now serves the village and surrounding rural areas of Huron-Kinloss and Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh and responds to an average of 150 calls a year dealing with emergencies, both fire and medical. Cemeteries Cemeteries 16 GREENHILL CEMETERY - 86511 Lucknow Line Established in 1901 to serve the Village plus Ashfield and West Wawanosh Townships and was incorporated late November 1901. First burial was Mrs. Susan Percy from Kinlough area in August 1901. In 1930 the Perpetual Upkeep Fund was started on a voluntary basis but with finances poor, the fee was added to the purchase of cemetery plots. The beautiful maple trees were planted in 1901. In 1965 a section was set aside for Catholic burials as requested by local residents. WEBSTER CAIRN - 1933 - North East Corner of Greenhill Cemetery Erected in honor of the original members of THE WEBSTER FAMILY who left their native Ireland in the early years of the nineteenth century to hew out for themselves and their families homes in the Canadian forest near this spot. This cairn is a humble expression of the respect and pride in which the memory of these noble Godfearing pioneer settlers is cherished by their descendants.

SOUTH KINLOSS CEMETERY - 1188 South Kinloss Avenue Around 1857 the first Presbyterian log church was built. 100 acres were purchased for the use of the Kinloss congregation. In 1902, five acres were purchased and comprises what is known as the new cemetery. A proposal was put forth in 1930 to improve the cemetery by using volunteer labour and by starting an endowment fund. Improvements included the steel fence, memorial gates and stone pillars at the entrance. A 1957 ceremony was held to mark the centennial of the pioneer burial grounds. The chapel and mausoleum were built in 1961. Cemeteries 17
