Overview high level system testing of all FANS-1/A data link applications that includes the ability to monitor every bit of data. Capability to emulate any ATSU ATC workstation using actual ACARS network. Multiple ATC workstations to support testing of connection management and transfer of communications. extensive debug capability for real time as well as post test debugging of problems. Comprehensive test procedure linked to the ESC Generic Performance Matrices for ADS-C, CPDLC, AFN, and Data Communications. extensive information assurance capability for susceptibility testing. SUPPORT BEFORE THE TEST Provide FANS-1/A Expertise to Test Plans, TPWGs ACTFAST Has Developed Generic Test Scenario Helps platforms save money Helps ensure commonality among platforms Helps ensure compliance to industry requirements Assist in Efficient Testing Practices Participate in SIL test planning Participate in TIS & ground/flight test cards generation Most used uplink and downlink messages Normal operational scenarios Help to generate system level tests Technical Understanding to CWGs Help Explain Avionics/Data Link Service Provider(s)/ATSU Interactions Slide 15

SUPPORT DURING TEST Send Uplinks To & Receive Downlinks From Aircraft Avionics or SIL (Perform the role of ATSUs) Real Time Assessment Of Test Success Or Failure Real Time Analysis Of Decoded Messages To Determine Message Content Real Time Initial Determination Of Proper Avionics Operation Real Time Analysis To Characterize Symptoms Of The Problem Real Time Analysis To Determine Problem Source (Avionics, DSP, ATSU) Slide 16

TESTING DETAILS Testing on several platforms that were done with vendor/prime software verification of FANS-1/A applications. Over 200 problems identified by the ACTFAST Team. ACTFAST worked with vendor/prime to resolve many problems and was used to proactively reduce future problems. As programs return to ACTFAST for program updates, ACTFAST becomes more critical to that program. Slide 19

LESSONS LEARNED (continued) Determine Problem Reporting Mechanism Up Front Test to Industry Requirements, Not Necessarily Platform Requirements Explain why tests are to industry requirements and help understand differences Allows necessary changes to be made early in program The Earlier Full System Level Tests Can Be Performed, The Better System Level Tests Should Represent Normal Operational Actions Fly VFR As Much As Possible When Testing Data Link Operation FMS Should Be Flying Aircraft For Proper Data Generation Slide 20

LESSONS LEARNED (continued) When Flying, Have Aircrew Perform Data Link Operations Have Aircraft Load And Follow Data Link Clearances DSP Connectivity Problems Can Abort Test Tail Number not in System (run Connectivity Tests for all new aircraft) SITA vs ARINC AOC Message Labels not in correct ARINC Table Test with DAFIF Navigation Data Base As Soon As Possible Major Differences Between Jepessen and DAFIF/AWE Allow Time Between Tests For Timely Analysis of Results Avionics State Data Required For Analysis of Problems Slide 21

LESSONS LEARNED (continued) Static Testing Not Sufficient (SIL Fidelity) Test Various Transfer Of Communication Scenarios Test Multiple ADS Connections Often HFDL Performance Use HFDL as little as possible, but as much as necessary Slide 22

LESSONS LEARNED ISEs Need ISE In Area Of Operations Ensure Connectivity Prior To ISE Ensure TACC Is Involved To Support Test Have DSO Personnel At ATSUs Do Not Test Data Link On FIR Boundaries Hold Meetings With ATSU Personnel Before And After Test Tell them in advance what tests are planned and when Get their post-test comments in writing (even if everything went well) Slide 23
