Focus on Cape Town March 24 to 31, 2015 This was my first trip with Stanford Travel/Study [it] could not have been made easier, more comfortable and fun. I look forward to more trips. Jane Sharninghouse, 79, MA 81, Focus on Barcelona, 2014

Boasting natural beauty, cultural diversity and warm friendly locals, Cape Town is one of the most magnificent cities in the world. From the picturesque beaches to the lush rolling hills of wine country to breathtaking mountain ranges, Cape Town offers a memorable experience. Rich culture, history and places of interest such as heritage sites, museums, and the famous Seventh Wonder of the World, Table Mountain. Dig deeper into the current events and recent history of Cape Town as we meet with local guest speakers, arranged through Stanford connections. Looking to explore a bit more of South Africa? Join us for a safari through the Sabi Sabi Reserve followed by two days in Johannesburg. Travel/Study is the best great professors, itineraries, traveling companions and personnel. Bonnie Brae, 59, Stanford Traveler

Faculty Leader Timothy Stanton, 69, is director emeritus and founder of the Bing Overseas Studies Program (BOSP) in Cape Town South Africa. Prior to joining BOSP, he founded and directed the Scholarly Concentration in Community Health and Public Service at Stanford s School of Medicine. He was associate director and director of the Haas Center for Public Service from 1985 to 1999. Stanton has taught in African studies, American studies, medicine and public policy for over 20 years. He serves as engaged scholar for Campus Compact, a national coalition of nearly 1,000 college and university presidents dedicated to promoting community service, civic engagement and service-learning in higher education, and consults extensively with universities and community-based organizations across the U.S., Southeast Asia and South Africa on community higher education partnerships and servicelearning. Itinerary Tuesday & Wednesday, March 24 & 25 U.S. / Cape Town, South Africa Depart the U.S. on overnight flights to Cape Town, arriving on Wednesday. Upon arrival, transfer to the Table Bay Hotel located on the beautiful Victoria and Alfred Waterfront. With panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean, Table Bay Harbor and Table Mountain, the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront has long been a favorite destination for locals and travelers. This evening gather for a welcome reception and dinner. TABLE BAY HOTEL (D) Thursday, March 26 Cape Town / Bing Overseas Center / Robben Island This morning travel a short distance to the Bing Overseas Center in Mowbray. Gain a better understanding of the campus mission, especially its focus on community-engaged scholarship opportunities, service-learning and research with township-based NGO partners. After the presentation, return to the Waterfront and enjoy lunch before boarding a boat to Robben Island. The island is well-known for its detention of prisoners, including scores of political leaders and activists during the anti-apartheid struggle, Nelson Mandela being the most famous. Return to our hotel late this afternoon and enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure. TABLE BAY HOTEL (B,L) Friday, March 27 Cape Town / Table Mountain / Amy Biehl Foundation Enjoy a morning cable car ride to the summit of Table Mountain (weather permitting) to admire the spectacular views. Descend the mountain and begin our tour of the city. Visit the District Six Museum a memorial to the forced movement of 60,000 inhabitants of various races in District Six during the apartheid era in South Africa. After a tour of the museum, visit the Amy Biehl Foundation, which was established by the parents of the Stanford student, Amy Biehl, who died in the Guguletu township in 1993. The center s programs are designed to develop and empower youth in the townships as a mechanism to reduce violence. Later today we return to our hotel for an evening at leisure. TABLE BAY HOTEL (B,L)

Saturday, March 28 Cape Town / Cape Peninsula Today, travel along the Atlantic seaboard through Sea Point, Bantry Bay, Camps Bay and Llandudno before driving along Hout Bay to the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve where we visit Cape Point. After lunch visit the penguins at Boulders Beach. Travel through the naval town of Simons Town along the False Bay coastline and return to our hotel to freshen up. This evening we transfer to the Grand Café Beach Club for an informal gathering with local Stanford alumni. Savor the view, drinks, canapés and great conversation before returning to our hotel. TABLE BAY HOTEL (B,L) Sunday, March 29 Cape Town / Winelands Travel to one of the surrounding wine growing areas of the Cape and taste award-winning wines made from fruit grown on historic estates. Visit the Solms Delta Wine in Franschoek, a 320-yearold estate, for a wine tasting. Continue to Haute Cabriere Wine Estate, which has a rich history and whimsical setting. Enjoy a wine tasting on this estate before being served a scrumptious lunch. Traverse the Helshoogte Pass to Stellenbosch for a brief orientation and stop to admire the whitewashed Cape Dutch homesteads, which bear early-18th-century dates on their gables. Return to Cape Town in the late afternoon and enjoy the evening at leisure. TABLE BAY HOTEL (B,L) Monday, March 30 Cape Town This morning we delve deep into the social, cultural and political history and current events of this region. Professor Timothy Stanton and associates will guide our conversation with their insights. The presentation will be interactive and thought provoking. Enjoy the afternoon at leisure exploring the Waterfront. This evening attend a festive farewell reception and dinner to celebrate the end of our week in Cape Town. What to Expect Main Program We consider this to be a moderately strenuous program. Half- to full days of touring are balanced with free time to explore Cape Town on our own. Daily programs involve one to three miles of walking in museums and on city tours and may involve extended periods of standing. Participants will encounter uneven terrain, including some dirt and cobblestone paths, and must be able to walk up and down hills. In some instances when stairs are a part of the tour, elevators are unavailable. Participants must be physically fit, active and in good health. We welcome travelers 15 years of age and older on this program. Post-trip Extension We consider this to be a moderately strenuous program that is at times physically demanding and busy. In the cities, daily programs involve one to two miles of walking, sometimes on uneven terrain. Most buildings do not have elevators, and stairs may not have handrails. Open-air, fourwheel-drive safari vehicles are used for our game drives in Sabi Sabi Game Reserve. Safaris may last several hours at a time and can be dusty and somewhat bumpy, as roads in the park are unpaved. Participants should be physically fit, active and in good health. We welcome travelers 15 years of age and older on this program.
