Golden Era Pylon Races -2017 20th year of this event By Don Howie and Peter Leaney I have to admit that I have attended all of the Golden Era races since 1997, where the guest from the UK was David Boddington. After the 1999 races (held every 2 years), I was asked to write a report for the AMI magazine in the UK. This was the start of my writing in UK magazines that continues today with FOTS articles in Aero Modeller magazine. The latest Golden Era races was backed by MASA and I noticed that our President Neil Tank, Vice President John Modistach and Secretary Paul Kumela helped greatly over the 3 days; the Friday started wet in the morning, but after lunch, we were able to fly a round of races. The weather improved and was almost perfect flying conditions on Saturday and Sunday. The Constellation flying field looked perfect and many people had caravans, staying at Constellation from Wednesday to Monday. Dave Newcombe & Dave Porter Double D Racing Team A total of 41 aircraft recorded scores in the 5 clasweddell Williams with Evolution 80cc ses flown over the 3 days. Many of the aircraft flown have been flying in the Golden Era races for many years. The Golden Era Inline has the oldest aircraft as the models (English designs) fly very well and are very fast. Peter Smyth, who won inline, said his Sparrow Hawk is 18 years old. The other popular aircraft, the Mew Gull, came 2nd and 3rd and I think the model flown by Mike O Reilly was built by Peter Goldsmith for the first race in 1997. An interesting model was flow by Trevor Pearce, Miles Atwood Special. This model was built by Geoff Burfield and kindly donated to Trevor to add some atmosphere. The Golden Era Radial has changed since Peter Leaney built the Hughes H1 racer from the 1930 s that featured retracting U/C and is quite fast for a radial model. Steve Wilkin won the event with this Hughes H1 and another, originally owned by Leo O Reilly, took 3rd Bruce Thompson Phoenix ARF P51 85 span OS 60 Petrol place for Trevor Gale. The new Reno Warbirds are very interesting with WW2 fighter aircraft from the USA. The P47 Thunderbolt took 1st and 3rd places, with the popular Mustang coming 2nd for Stuart Humpherson. The newer F1 class is dominated by Frank Tweek Weeks with his Dick Ohm Special that is very fast with his DLE 55 engine, running on petrol/oil mix. This aircraft put in the fastest heats for the races. Steve Wilkin came 2nd with a very famous design the Shoestring. The Fang by Greg Leigh, was very close to Steve Wilkin, only a fraction of a second over 5 races to take 3rd place. Dave Brown from Wallerawang (?) in NSW won the Trevor Pearce White Lightning Texan AT6 class, the model crashing on landing, after the 2 x DLE 30 7
last round. He was seen with a wheelbarrow collecting the remains. I have included a photo of his Hall Bulldog at 100 inch span and 100cc DA twin petrol engine, this 40 lb model is very hard to land properly, he got cheers from the crowd after landing 3 times straight without breaking it. He had nightmares one night as he thought he had forgotten to fix it yet again. The Leo O Reilly Memorial Concourse Trophy was won by Dave Porter from the Double D racing team with his superb Weddell Williams, Dave s skill as a spray painter was sure on display. Our official photographer was again Ross Felix and you Frank Weeks Dick Ohm Special DLE55 can see his amazing pictures at this site :https://www.flickr.com/photos/rossfelix/sets/72157688026961652 To add to the fun Ross drove his beautiful Ford model A to the field and we assembled a typical dressed up racing crew consisting of, heroic pilots Frank Tweek Weeks and Trevor Froggy Pearce. The mechanic who actually does all the work for the team was Dave Nuke Newcombe and the useless manager was Peter Is there a buck in it Leaney. See the above site for some atmospheric pictures. We must thank the clubs, such as Constellation, Holdfast, Noarlunga, Port Lincoln and South Hummocks that helped over the 3 days. I think the flyers enjoyed the event as it was very well run. It seems the Golden Era is still very popular in South Australia and some parts of Victoria. SA PRECISION AEROBATICS T he Precision Aerobatics (Pattern) group met on Sunday 12 Nov at the Strath club site a hot day with variable light winds. Every 2 years the routines change from the international FAI masters and this was the case the new commencing Jan 1 next... We had access to the diagrams and descriptions a week or so before...the challenge was before us to have a learning day beforehand...and this was it! So, with a few days background we were all rather raw and were more than happy to see the highest rated flier present - Jeff Boyd go through the new routine with helpful tips on judging fine points. Then it was out to the flight line and see how it was done and after Jeff and then Dave Williams flew we knew the gloves were off... most of us explored the local area scenery, as well as things that resembled patterns. The days heat was unrelenting; however, the new club shelter was greatly appreciated. Graham and the crew put on a wonderful lunch and then flying resumed and it ended with very tired members heading home. Learning a new pattern with new and unusual patterns is not easy (there may be 17 or more all chained precisely together) is a significant challenge for those above Sportsman, not only is the geometry an issue but artistic presentation and precision are important - different names all need to be learnt and linked to the pattern then incorporated into a set sequence. Sportsman the lowest has changed also to add in a touch of continuous procedures into the standard manoeuvres such as one may see in Gold wings etc. This day was possible only because of the generosity of Strath to provide their facility exclusively and we would like to thank them very much for that and the excellent lunch... The Club works hard to help newcomers and bring them to being skilled in their sport and as such its mostly competition with ones-self...a good mix. I like to see my results and then can practice and hopefully over time achieve a goal of satisfaction! 10
