TICKS the area of Germany we are visiting, is a high risk area for ticks they are tiny parasitic insects that resemble small spiders or mites ticks cannot fly or jump but climb onto humans with whom they come into contact ticks can carry infections and transmit them to people when they bite most common infections they transmit are : Lyme disease and tick-borne encephalitis or meningitis
TICKS- pre-cautions Wearing long-sleeved shirts as well as long trousers tucked into socks or shoes; choose light-coloured fabrics to make it easier to spot ticks. Not lying on the grass. Not walking barefoot. Avoid walking through high grass or woods. Avoid touching bushes when outside. Apply insect repellents; DEET-containing preparations will deter ticks. Inspect the skin several times a day, but particularly before going to bed. Once indoors, make a thorough inspection, inspecting the scalp and warm areas such as the back of the neck at the hair line, the arm pits, behind the knees, in the groin area and under folds of skin such as at the waist. Taking a shower will reduce the risk. Always check clothes that were worn. It is not advisable to try and remove a tick yourself if you spot one instead students should inform the teachers
TICK REPELLENT it would be beneficial for every student to carry some tick repellent, that they can use before going outside. They are available at boots or any pharmacy. Please make sure to buy repellent in 100ml bottles in order for your child to be able to carry it in their hand luggage. You can find further information and advice on the NHS website. If you wish to do so, please visit: http://www.nhs.uk/search/?q=ticks
