CUBA Delegation! Women s Issues, Challenges & Opportunities in CUBA January 4-12, 2014 Dear AAUW Members: Have you ever thought about visiting Cuba? Now s the time! Join us for a research delegation in Cuba January 4 12, 2014. Combine your passions for women s empowerment and adventure on a weeklong education with other researchers and activists. Our fall 2012 trip was a huge success and we came home with a wealth of information about women s lives, challenges, and goals in Cuba. PURPOSE: The delegation will gather information on topics of interest to the U.S. women s studies research community. These topics span a range of Cuban women s issues: Challenges and responsibilities surrounding gender roles Women at work in traditional and nontraditional, urban and rural occupations Women in government, science, music, and medicine Protecting women s rights at home and at work WHO QUALIFIES: You must be a professional in a field related to qualify. Not sure if that includes you? Please contact Taunya DeYoung at phone (800) 252-4910 or email Taunya@betchartexpeditions.com. PROGRAM OVERVIEW: The program centers on in-person meetings with prominent Cuban women professionals in the fields we study. This makes for authentic and thorough results, which you can apply to your career, volunteer work, and day-to-day life. ITINERARY: The trip will begin in Miami with a welcome and briefing. The next day we will fly to Havana for an orientation in the city. There, we will meet with members of the Federation of Cuban Women about women s rights at home and at work and visit the Literacy Museum for a lesson on women s role in the successful 1960s campaign to end illiteracy in Cuba a campaign that has since become a model for countries around the world. From Havana, our journey continues to the Las Terrazas and Sierra del Rosario reserves, rural areas where women s industry has taken great steps in recent years particularly in the largely women-based workforce of ecotourism. Other stops include a trip to the Orquideario Soroa botanical orchid garden, which runs educational projects to help children learn about local ecology, plants, and wildlife; and a private visit to the Parliament House led by a representative who will discuss women s participation in Cuban parliament and local politics. We will learn firsthand about some of the great scientific achievements by Cuban women, as well as the local health challenges they face, and (schedule permitting) we will meet members of the Cuban all-women orchestra. HOW TO APPLY: To reserve your place, please fill out and send the attached itinerary, reservation form and deposit, and application to taunya@betchartexpeditions. com. If you do not qualify, your deposit will be refunded. Feel free to contact Taunya DeYoung with any questions: telephone: (800) 252-4910 or email: Taunya@betchartexpeditions.com Traveling in a couple? We d love to have you! Both partners must meet delegation qualifications; please contact Taunya to get started. We hope you will be able to join us for another fascinating visit to Cuba!
